I wanted to like this, I really did. After reading Butterfly Swords which I really liked, I looked for books with the similar setting.

But unfortunately, this is book is not nearly as good. I know this is just a short story but still, everything seems rushed, the h/h declaring love after a couple hours of knowing each other, the rather neat ending where all of their troubles disappear (if only everything was like that in RL).

Supposedly set in the Heian period, this book shows no understanding of the culture and customs of the time, and instead of creating a spirited heroine true to the Heian period, the author gives us yet another tiresome faux-medieval babe with a tender heart and belief in social equality. The few Heian details dropped in are in one place described as 'strange' and in another place immoral - which would not be the case to anyone raised in the culture. This was a fun quick read for what it was, glad I read it. A nice change in the romance setting from Vikings, Regency and Highlanders.
