Fantastic ideas incorporated into this series. No one is investing more into re-imagining the Marvel Universe's already well-established history, and boy is Hickman pouring real effort into this and the Secret Warriors. What with all the multiple-titles-per-month writing going on in Marvel these days, it's a rare treat to get someone who sits down and thinks up more than appears on the page.
Weaver's gorgeous artwork lavishly renders each panel, and he does some Big Scenery well.

Interesting, but it really is all sizzle and no steak.
Lots of big, clever ideas and no payoff or any real foundation or hook character to keep me interested.
The 'hero' ( or character I think Hickman is setting up to be the hero) has no personality and does nothing.
THe idea of a conspiracy stretching through history to protect the world from all the crazy, dangerous stuff in the marvel universe and that it's membership included guys like De Vinci is cool, but it contradicts actual marvel history...more

I don't often review comics though I read more than my share. Occasionally, however, there comes along something that really grabs my fancy. More often than not, it is a book about which I am the last to board the train, like Fables. Then there are those rare cases where a book comes along that I want to push on fellow fans of the form.

Expectations were high back when this series was previewed. I eventually had to pass on reading it monthly and recently purchased it in trade. My familiarity with Hickman is short (only read his first and incredible work, "The Nightly News") and his new rise to fame at Marvel seemed like something to look for. This was a great concept that once again Marvel didn't have a clue how to continue. The art, though it was the kind of heartless clean lines with muddied digital coloring that most Big 2 comics languish in these days it actually worked for this particular story somehow. And while the writing was a bit elementary (DaVinci had a habit of telling people who he was and how important his actions were) it was a great combination for turning one of Marvel's older institutions on its head. This isn't perfect, but it's really cool: as it turns out, S.H.I.E.L.D. has been around longer than you'd think, and some of its members include Leonardo da Vinci and Sir Isaac Newton. It's the kind of story that deserves the word "epic", and I love that Jonathan Hickman and Dustin Weaver so obviously let their imagination go wild. Weaver's art is incredible (on a very superficial note: his Leonardo is *gorgeous*), and the way this ties in with the rest of the Marvel universe is fun to see. I lo...more

I do have a problem with the idea of SHEILD as a brotherhood. I understand it is historically accurate that only men would have been recognized as being "worthy" of this brotherhood, but it would have been really easy for the authors to write in a solution to this sexism problem. They could have either made the main character a woman, because I have no idea why it needs to be a man, or they could have just said SHEILD would have...more

HOLY SNAPS!!!! THIS BOOK IS AMAZING!!!! This was the first work that I read by Jonathan Hickman...and I have to say I came away from it deeply impressed. S.H.I.E.L.D. is basically about the origins of the organization that we all know from Tony Stark and Nick Fury...but this is much, much different than you would originally think. Don't sleep on this; everyone needs to check this out ASAP!

very pretty graphic novel that posits a secret society that presumably turns into S.H.I.E.L.D. that includes Isaac Newton, and Leonardo Da Vinci and Nikola Tesla AND Howard Stark (father of Tony Stark) and Nathaniel Richards (father of Reed Richards). But mostly the story jumps around too much and has too little plot and ends up being stupid and pointless and really without depth.
An interesting alternate history featuring the most iconic names in science from the past several centuries. If you like secret societies and larger-than-life "historical" figures, give this a try. But be warned: it is not a complete story, Only issues 1--6 of the series were collected for this binding. The story continues in S.H.I.E.L.D. The Human Machine.
Very promising. The cast features Nostradamus, Newton, Da Vinci, Imhotep & Tesla as members of a secret society that works behind the scenes to protect and advance mankind against the likes of the alien brood, the world devourer Galactus and the celestials. But the greatest danger, as always, is from within.

I knew this was going to be pretty good, but I was still blown away by it. It's very similar to Five Fists of Science, but totally ramped up to the next level and mixed in with some Marvel Comics mythos. Very interesting but not so "comics" that non-marvel readers can't enjoy it.
I love Hickman's Fantastic Four, but this was a mess. Western genius fanfic mashed up with the Marvel Universe with a lot of sound and fury that suddenly ends in the middle because 6 issues was enough for a collection.
This is simply the best comic I have read this year. Hickman spins a yarn that spans centuries and it is awesome! The greatest minds to ever live play a part in this story and it leaves you wanting more. Epic!
Amazing and you can read it as a long time Marvel fan or someone who has never read a comic. Leonardo da Vinci Vs Galactus or to non comic fans da Vinci versus a space god that eats planets.
I'm a Hickman fan and there are some amazing concepts here, but I didn't feel like there was a whole lot to latch onto in terms of story and character. Still dug it though!
The art is fantastic. I really like Hickman. But, I'm not sure about this title. I was somewhat confused at times. Maybe I need to re-read it.
Can you like something without understanding it? I like the idea of this book. A solid read, if a bit hard to follow.

This is perhaps the most high concept comic book I've read, and that can make it discouraging to read. But this is a truly interesting story that delves right to the heart of the Marvel Universe and the way we think about concepts in general.

It's a neat idea, but the story is just not dense enough. It flies by in vague impressions.
All kinds of cool. Can't wait for the next story.
Maybe it's a guilty pleasure. I don't know.

S'il n'avait fallu lire qu'un seul bouquin sorti par Marvel cette année. Une écriture très intelligente, parfois très/trop fouillée, de multiples portes s'ouvrent face au scénariste (et donc face aux lecteurs). Le dessin est vraiment très réussi, notamment sur le numéro 1 ; on assiste parfois à un découpage franco-belge dans les cases. Le tout est très agréable. Je conseille. Très. Très. Fortement. En attendant le Volume II.
S.h.i.e.l.d.'s secret esoteric pre-history, brilliantly dreamed up by Hickman and lavishly rendered by the no less brilliant artist Dustin Weaver. Had kind of a hint of a weird "Da Vinci Code" vibe to it, but was much fun none the less. More wondrous than thrilling, this is a fairly original read.
It has some nice pictures, but the story is terrible
