Michelle Harrison knows a lot about fairy lore. She takes this knowledge and writes a story about an early teenage girl who has the second sight and her toddler brother. Rowan has always seen fairies. They are not beautiful and kind creatures but malicious and stink of earth other smells not so pleasant. She and her brother are suddenly orphaned and sent to a home for orphans. But fairies do lurk in this home and eventually a greedy fairy starts kidnapping babies and replacing them with "c

The Thirteen Curses is a story of what happens when our world and fairy land come together. But this isn't the Fairyland of gossamer winged beings granting human wishes, rather one where the fairies are more like pixies or even goblins, teasing and tricking people, stealing human children and replacing them with their own. Rowan's brother has been taken by the fairies, to free him she must find the 13 missing charms of an enchanted bracelet, which were once treasures but have now become cur More...

In my opinion this was perhaps better than the first one merely because it seemed to go into more depth and detail in that the characters were given the chance to really come alive here with detail and a history. I loved the way that we were introduced to one of the characters from the first novel, but that we were also able to really dive into her life and gain a better understanding of who she is and what she is all about. I felt that the adventure she had to go meant that the reader became mo

Red takes center stage this time around, having traded her life for Tanya's, and she now finds herself in fairy land--hunted and caught by a disgusting old creature called the Hedgewitch, held captive in a cellar, and doomed to die most unpleasantly. The arrival of Warwick (captured as he was attempting to rescue Florence's new housekeeper, who strayed into the woods) is a surprise, and even more surprising is the Hedgewitch's sudden poisoning and death. Warwick and Red are led to the Fairy Co

Tanya has discarded the charm bracelet that reminds her of the previous summer’s nightmare from The Thirteen Treasures. Burdened with bad memories, the bracelet is left on Florence’s kitchen table while Tanya (back at her grandmother’s house for mid-term vacations) and Fabian venture into Hangman’s Wood to return Mad Morag’s magical compass. It belongs with her now that, as promised, it no longer works for the children. As the duo enters the woods, the bracelet, alone on the table, reminds the

Fairies! Goblins! Witches! Welcome to The Thirteen Curses.
After reading Michelle Harrison's fantastic debut novel The Thirteen Treasures, I was so excited to get stuck into The Thirteen Curses. Having now read both books, I'd go so far as to say that Harrison is up there with my favourite UK authors, and is now in the good company of Marcus Sedgwick, Sarra Manning and Lucy Christopher. Seriously, she's that good.

When Red Fox saw her brother stolen from the childrens' home, she vowed to get him back no matter what it took. The Thirteen Curses is the story of her struggle to do that.
The book starts with an overlap of the first book, told from Red's point of view as she finds her way around the faerie realm. Gradually, we learn more about her tragic past but Red isn't the kind of girl to let you feel sorry for her. She's feisty and determined and doesn't let anything stand in her way. The book More...

The Thirteen Curses concentrates on the story of Red, who was one of my favourite characters in the first book The Thirteen Secrets. At the end of The Thirteen Secrets, Red swapped places with Tanya and became trapped in the fairy realm. Red is determined to find out what happened to her brother who was kidnapped by the fairies and sets off on a journey to the fairy court. Whilst confronting the fairy court, Tanya discovers that she will have to carry out a bargain, in order to see the safe

The Thirteen Curses is the dark and edgy sequel to the spectacular, The Thirteen Treasures.
A supporting character from The Thirteen Treasures, Red, takes centre stage in the sequel. Red is a runaway and hid in Elvesden Manor and then saved Tanya’s life at the end of The Thirteen Treasures. We switch between Tanya and Red in alternate narration, one of my favourite formats to read. I loved learning more about the brave, daring and loyal Red and finding out, through flashback chapters, More...

Red's little brother has been kidnapped by fairies. In order to get him back, she goes before the fairy court where she begs for his life. She strikes a bargain wherein she must find all 13 charms from a bracelet in order to get him back. Red and her friends must now seek out all 13 treasures, except for they have turned into curses, each one worse than the one before it.

This is yet another sequel that I managed to read before the first book in the series. Despite this I found it easy to be drawn into the book and the characters. I found them easy to relate to and could even imagine that fairies truly existed as in the book!
I am looking forward to reading this story to my sister. It is definitely a childrens book but one that older people can enjoy too. It was at times sad, and the ending itself nearly made me cry. (nearly).

After reading the first in this series, 13 Treasures, and enjoying it, I was happy to get an advanced reading copy of this sequel. I'm not a big fan of fairy stories, but this book was about half based in the fairy realm and half in the real world, so it had enough non-fairy stuff to please me. It took me longer to get into this one than the first, but when the three main young characters, Red/Rowan, Tanya, and Fabian (who I grew to really like and root for in the first book) set out to find t

I received this book for review, and was blown away by it’s gorgeousness!
I sat down and started to flip through it and was so sad to find out it was a BOOK TWO in a series! bah! You guys know me, and how I hate to read a series out of order, so I ended up setting it aside until I could get the first book in the series. I got 13 Treasures : book one (my review is here) and omgosh LOVED LOVED LOVED it. Uhm… Did I mention

An sequel, but not quite, to 13 Treasures, which I enjoyed. The same characters appear, but this is more Red's story than Tanya's. Since I sense that there's another book coming, can I just ask for one from Fabian's point-of-view?
Red's time in the land of the fay is, of course, passing faster than time in the non-fay world. After being trapped by the Hedgewitch, she learns more about her brother's capture and meets Stitch, a human who decides to help her with her quest to plead fo More...

REVIEW FOR THE THIRTEEN CURSES BY MICHELLE HARRISON
I've waited eagerly for this book ever since I stumbled upon a copy of The Thirteen Treasures (the previous book) at the local library. As The Thirteen Treasures series is an originally UK published book, almost all three books in the trilogy have been released in England. Although the age group that the Thirteen Treasures series is directed at is about 10 and up, I feel as if the only reason why this wouldn't appeal to teens is just t More...

The cover on this is similar to The 13 Treasures, although this one is blue, whereas The 13 Treasures copy I had was red.
Yeyyy! I thoroughly enjoyed the first in the series, The 13 Treasures, last year. I'm always apprehensive when it comes to reading series books, as in an ideal world every book would be just as good as the first, which is not always the case. This is the second book in a trilogy which began with ‘The Thirteen Treasures’. Yet again, I’ve read book 2 first but it really didn’t matter because I immediately got swept along with the story. ‘The Thirteen Curses’ is an imaginative romp through the faerie world. Michelle Harrison has crafted a magical world of faeries and goblins that is so absorbing I forgot where I was at times! The first few pages take the reader straight into the flow of the story and we join Red as she attempts to r

In this installment, The Thirteen Curses, from Michelle Harrison we follow the story of Red who we met in the first installment- The Thirteen Treasures. For me, this second installment was amazing. Even now I’m sat here trying not to gush and say, ‘I loved this book just because.’

I found this sequel to 13 Treasures a little hard to get in to in the beginning, maybe because it had been awhile since I read the first one. With the help of the flashbacks, I found myself being drawn in and enjoying it more and more. I really think that you need to read 13 Treasures first, to appreciate all of the characters, though I also had hard time with that one at the start. They are both well worth reading. There was a nice little twist at the end too. Recommended for grades 5 & up.

Even better (and thicker) than Thirteen Treasures. Although it wasn't unpredictable, it was interesting, plot-driven, and well-written. The strands of the plot were interwoven with sophistication, and the characters had surprising emotional depth. Again, a book an adult can read and enjoy.
I was surprised the author was so young - young authors recently seem to have gravitated toward writing paranormal romance, which does my head in. Enough of that, thx.

It was good enough, however i felt that half the books was spent waffling on about stuff that was irrelevant to the plot. Finally, halfway through, i started to see the story that had been expressed on the blurb. It took that long.
Also, NO WAY was there enough romance. There wasn't any. Come on! How am I meant to manage without even a little bit off romance??
I can't, but i still gave it four stars because it was mostly enjoyable.
