Ahh, how times have changed. I used to consider these books a good guilty pleasure; now I find there's a lot less pleasure and a lot more guilt. Kinsella is still an amusing, energetic writer, but Becky really grated on my nerves this time around. She's just so shallow and so frivolous, and while in the first few books she was also just a regular working girl, now that she's rich (thanks entirely to her husband), her insane overspending and materialism swiftly loses its charm and becomes...icky....more

If you are a fan of the Shopaholic Series, then you will absolutely love this book. Becky Bloomwood gets ready to have her baby and it is just hysterical to read how she prepares for the big day, buying loads of "prams" and exclusive baby toys that are "fab". She is seeing an obstetrician that her husband, Luke, has known for years and actually delivered him years ago. She likes him but wants to see a fabulous celebrity obstetrician so that she can drink tea with the stars...more

first few pages made me laughed already but as i go later into the story YES....becky has gotten more shallow for some reason;it felt like someting was missing comparing from the previous series.
BUT
i'll admit;she is fab!
"she's a red-hed bitch, and i hate her"...that made me laugh so hard.how sophie kinsella create becky's mind is wonderful!shallow and materialistic but creative and one of a kind.
just a great fun to read it.

This is the fifth book in the Shopaholic series by Kinsella, and, I'm happy to say, an improvement over the last (Shopaholic & Sister). I don't want to spend a great deal of time catching you up on the whole series (check past blogs or Amazon for details), but in this installment Becky & Luke are pregnant with their first child. Like usual, Kinsella throws us right into it with three little words: "Ok. Don't panic."

I read the Shopaholic books as soon as I can get my hands on a copy. Sophie Kinsella is a really funny writer. She has sustained the Shopaholic idea through more sequels than most writers can. However, this book (and the previous one, Shopaholic and Sister) isn't as spot-on as the first two. I mean, isn't Becky ever going to learn to stop overspending? Every book involves her getting in a financial hole, then reforming at book's end, only to start over again in the next book. And of course, now ...more

this was my favorite of the whole series. partly because she doesn't do anything completely ridiculous, and you can see that she is learning and growing and communicating more, even if it's not as much as she should. i seriously love how becky and suze refer to people they don't like as "cows". maybe it's an english thing, but it seems like such a random choice of words. even though all along you know how kind hearted, fun and well meaning becky is, i love how it comes out even mor...more

I had the misfortune of buying this book before a long flight to Europe. Due to a lack of alternative entertainment, I read the book from cover to cover. While the book had some funny excerpts, my extreme dislike for the main character (Becky Brandon) overshadowed any enjoyment garnered from the book.
Rather than being lovable, I found Becky to be irresponsible, annoying and pretentious. For example, after Becky's husband explains that his company is "hemorrhaging money" and a...more

Read the whole series this spring. I needed something light-hearted and funny, and these books fit the bill. What I liked about them: they made me laugh. I could identify with some of the rationalizations the character makes when buying things she doesn't really need. I loved her friendship with Suze. Her parents are a hoot, and she has a good relationship with them.

Diantara empat serial Shopaholic I think I like this book the most.

I like these books, I do, but I swear that my blood pressure is higher today than yesterday. I'm a horrible budgeter, but the way Becky spends in these books and the secrets she keeps make my a wreck. I think I was totally tense about her not understanding truly what having a baby means, she's out buying cute boots for the baby and saying she doesn't think she need a car seat. Yikes! All in all, a good and fun summer read, although, I could have done without half of the swearing.

In this book, Rebecca and Luke are expecting their first child. Becky has to have everything for the new baby from the best pram down to 400 count crib sheets. Everything is perfect. Luke's job, Becky has the celebrity obstetrician that no one else can get into, a spot in British Vogue. Things couldn't be better. Than her world comes crashing down.
To her utter dismay, she finds out the this new doctor is Luke's ex-girlfriend who turns out to be a royal pain in the butt. She really is...more

I started reading the Shopaholic series in 2004. I loved the first book, Confessions of a Shopaholic and immediately jumped into Shopaholic Takes Manhattan, which is still my favorite of the series. It’s filled with humorous situations, however it takes a real look on the consequences of impulsive shopping. I read books 3 and 4, but when Shopaholic & Baby was released, I started it and then put it down.

After finishing the book I have to say that the end is much better than the beginning. Maybe it's the AP mother in me that was a little bothered by the whole baby as a fashion accessory frame of mine. I knew what to expect going in, but it still rubs me the wrong way even if a work of fictions.
Who would have thought that by the final chapters Becky would have returned all her designer baby gear and ended up being a breastfeeding, babywearing mama? That makes me happy. :)

Shopaholic & Baby by Sophie Kinsella
Becky's life is blooming! She's working at London's newest fashion store The Look, house-hunting with husband Luke (her secret wish is a Shoe room) .... and she's pregnant! She couldn't be more overjoyed- especially since discovering that shopping cures morning sickness. Everything has got to be perfect for her baby: from the designer nursery, to the latest, coolest pram, to the celebrity, must-have obstetrician. But when the celebrity obstetrician...more

These books are literary confections and make perfect vacation reads. A blurb on the book jacket compares these stories to classic "I Love Lucy" episodes. I couldn't agree more. Rebecca (aka: Bex or Becky) Brandon gets into and out of more scrapes and "ingenious" schemes. It also doesn't hurt that recent books are set in London. The British simply have some hysterical turns of phrase. In addition, I am getting to know this author and her plot devices. One particularly ...more

Life is treating Becky Brandon well: Luke's business is expanding thanks to a new customer, Iain Wheeler; they rapidly sold their flat and are house-hunting; and though Becky is working as a personal shopper at a failing department store, her empty schedule allows plenty of time for obstetrician appointments (and shopping for the baby). Her obstetrician is the doctor who delivered Luke, and is very highly ranked, but Becky is desperate to get in with the Obstetrician to the Celebrities: Venetia ...more

this was not my favorite of the shopaholic series. i still enjoyed it and it still made me laugh, but after several books of the same plot idea(lying, hiding things, buying a lot, getting into huge scrapes, and eventually saving the day), i got a little tired of it. sophie kinsella kept it light and changed it up a little, but despite that, the same basic story was being told in a different way with a new lesson for becky to learn.

OK, DON'T PANIC. I'm home on maternity leave and need to do a staff book review. Like I actually have time to read anything with a newborn screaming in the background! But wait, I have a copy of the new Shopaholic galley...surely my laughter will drown out the sounds of the baby crying! And it helps that I can relate to the baby theme—the pram shopping (OK, I have a boring stroller), celebrity OBGYN (OK, mine was not so glamorous), and planned Water birth with Lotus Flowers (OK, again, not me)...more

I think this was my least favorite of the Shopaholic books. This girl just never learns - which is why there is always a new book I suppose. I guess it was cuter for her to be so awful with managing her life when she wasn't bringing a child into the equation. It was still a fun read but I definetly did not get the pleasure from this title that I did from her other books. I just want to shake Becky and tell her to grow up already!
