Loved it! They all tried to air The Ghoul Next Door, they're movie and Cleo helped Bekka and Haley, but the guys at the TV network said they didn't want the faces blured so they canceled it anyway. Then Cleo's friends wanted to do the shoot again, but later they heard it was airing, but didn't know why. They watched and Bekka unblured the faces and exposed them all! Oh my gosh, I'd faint! I decided to read this book because I had finished the first one, Monster High, and had an undying urge to read the next sequal. In a brief summary of the book, Melody has successfully gotten the RADs out of the spotlight of every news channel in Salem, Oregan and kept Brett's over-bearing ex-girlfriend, Bekka from publishing the video of Jackson, but now there's another mission to complete. The Ghoul Next Door begins right where Monster High ended. Melody is still clueless as to how to help her schizophrenic boyfriend Jackson, who thanks to his psycho grandfather who had turned himself into Dr. Jekyl/Mr. Hyde complex, ends up turning into someone else when he gets too hot. Bekka continues to send text messages to Melody, letting her know time is running out. In a noble act, Frankie decides the best way to go is to turn herself in. She is, after all, the reason why her family and the RADs where exposed. Thankfully, Billy (the only invisible RAD) comes up with a genius plan to keep Frankie hidden and Jackson from having his dark secret exposed to the world. In a crazy turn of events, Brett breaks up with Bekka and declares his love for Frankie on live TV no less! The two team up together to help the RADs show the “normies” (humans) that they have nothing to fear from the RADs. They decide to make a documentary interviewing all the young members of the RADs and promise to blur everyone’s face. But faster than electricity can spark from Frankie’s finger, everything starts to fall apart. Cleo is being a royal pain and determined to not only shut down the video but get everyone to believe Melodork (Melody) shouldn’t be trusted. Bekka isn’t far behind. Along with her sidekick, Haylee, Bekka will stop at nothing to prove monsters do exist and steal Brett back from Frankie. But Melody soon has something even more shocking to deal with: she may be more like the RADs than she knows.

The novel is still told from three different perspectives this time around: Melody, Frankie, and Cleo’s. Cleo is undeniably stuck up, ridiculously arrogant, and incredibly selfish. But what else could you expect from a girl born to be a queen. She has the chance to be in a Teen Vogue photo shoot and display her jewelry sketches to the world. Cleo finally gets her moment to shine. The problem: Cleo’s friends bail on her in order to do the documentary. A huge power shift transcends. Cleo is dethroned by Melody and Frankie and will stop at nothing to return to the top. Cleo is so grandiose in her drama and selfishness I had trouble being able to get through her chapters. She had far too many chapters narrated by her voice and I wished the author would have shortened how many she got. Cleo just didn’t seem to have a lot of substance. She does show more depth later on in the book but I couldn’t appreciate it as much because she is so stuck up!

Melody and Frankie don’t get to narrate as much as I would have preferred. Frankie is adorable with her new relationship with Brett. She is still strong, fierce, and gusty. She is still determined to free the RADs from their self-inflicted exile and join the human world with the monster world. Melody is learning to stand up for herself more and conquer her fears. She is still trying to find the right footing but she is much stronger and accepting of herself. Melody is also wonderfully loyal and I really like that about her.

I also really loved Billy, the only invisible RAD within the monster group. He is such a prankster and so funny. He is also sweet, daring, and kind. He ended up narrating one of the chapters in the novel. It was very out of the blue, which took me a moment to wrap my mind around, and was too short! I hope Billy gets more of a voice in the next installment or even gets his own book. He has become one of my favorite characters of the series.

The Monster High novels are very silly and superficial. There is a great deal of mentions of clothes brands, jewelry brands, shoe brands, make-up lines, and grooming. There is also a lot of boy fighting. The writing at times seems to be geared toward the preteen young adult world and is full of a great deal of angst. The humor is relatively good but can get obnoxious at times. But underneath all of that fluff, is an actual story. The central idea behind The Ghoul Next Door is a civil rights like movement in the monster community. There is heart to the characters and a deep loving camaraderie.

The Ghoul Next Door is a fun, light, and quick read. The modern day versions of the classic scary monster stories are created with unique twists and good lessons. There is a character everyone can relate to and it’s an amusing escape for a few hours everyone will enjoy.

"Spark off, Frankie Stein. There's a new headline in town." But things never seem to go as planned in Salem, Oregon, and there are some twists and turns that will change everything. You'll have t read the book to find out more.

This book was, in my opinion, really good. I liked how the author made it easy to distinguish the different voices in the story. I liked the different monsters there were and how they were described. There was a cliff-hanger at the end that I did not expect at all, and it really made me want to buy the next book. " She had everything she had been fighting for. Everything except the truth. Another thing I really liked about the book was how modern it was. There was so many references to things that teens today would understand! "Frankie Stein turned to face the caged lab rats beside her bed... Gaga, Girlicious, Green Day, and Ghostface Killa continued spooning"

I rated this book four out of five because though I really liked this book, I feel that they should have gone into depth about some of the monster's origins. I would have found it interesting to hear more about Ghoulia or Deuce or Clawdeen than spend two pages reading a description of Cleo's house. And there is lots of unresolved conflict still waiting to e discussed. But I really do like the series, and I am ready to by the third! (less)

The first installment of Lisi Harrison’s Monster High series ended rather in the manner of a sentence spoken by one of her ditzy characters–yes, with a questioning tone. Things have come to a head between the monsters and the normies of Salem, and the various monsters and preternaturals attending Merston (yes, a very subtle anagram of “monster”) High, thanks to the antics of young Frankie Stein, are at risk of being outed.

The Ghoul Next Door ostensibly begins moments after this cliffhanger ending, but rather than getting straight into the witch hunt side of things (this is Salem after all), Harrison turns her mind to more serious matters. Those more serious matters being a Teen Vogue photoshoot.

Now, not to deride Anna Wintour, whom I hear is a very serious lady indeed, but weighing up a ghoulish monster mash against a shoot that probably won’t even make it to the main fashion spread? It may be the general apathetic lethargy of this 2o-something reviewer, but I’m reading for the flashing eyes, dangerous talons and gnashing teeth–of the monster lot, that is, not Wintour. Unfortunately Harrison elevates what should be a minor subplot to key narrative stats, and rather than getting to the good stuff–which is, given the ending of the last book, where we should be–she spends a good half of the book parading fashionista Cleo about on the pages. Cleo is, admittedly, a good deal of fun, but there’s a whole blackmail schebang going on in the background while she waltzes around bathing in milk and eating dates.

But though we do see a little more of the other characters and their efforts towards gaining some modicum of acceptance, these elements are worked in not only in a secondary manner, but also in a way that’s ultimately unconvincing. We’re told that the monster families of Salem have been for generations protecting their identities against the town’s bigots–to the point that teens go about in “white face”, and are subjected to a curfew–but yet the monsters are given the okay to go on the record–on film, no less–to set things straight. Plot-wise, it all feels a bit hasty and contrived, and the bizarre photoshoot scene and the cliffhanger style ending of this second novel leaves me feeling just a wee bit cynical about whether these books are designed as anything more than Mattel doll selling vehicles (and vehicles for some truly awful “Aussie” dialogue. “Bonza” and “dinkum” indeed.)

Still, the interesting stuff here is the marginalisation of the monster characters and their ambivalence over “outing” themselves. Like the first novel in the series, in which Frankie Stein is forced to cover up her true self in order to “pass” according to the accepted social norms, this second novel looks at wider social prejudices and the effect on self-concept that this has on the teens who for whatever reason fall outside the bounds of “normal”. Harrison does spend some time reflecting on the varied ways in which these teens may be othered–some in what may seem like minor ways, others through overt attacks–and this is quite interesting. Tragically, the teens’ efforts to document their experiences and challenges is undermined when their narrative is taken from them and rewritten according to mainstream perceptions.

Though all of this occurs in amongst monstrous puns (yes, I’m a hypocrite, but I couldn’t let that one go) and determined efforts to squeeze as much novelty out of the yearbooks of the arcane as possible, it’s surprisingly moving. It’s a shame, though, that what has been–and should be–the major theme of the series becomes subjugated to Cleo’s quest for fame. (It could, of course, be argued that this is quite pointed).

Still, I don’t want to spend too much time analysing what’s going on here, because, well, really, there’s not that much going on here. The Monster High books are essentially a rampaging romp of puns, supernatural cameos, and freak chic, and though they’re too slick to really resonate for much more than a moment or two after that final page has been turned, they’re low-key fun.(less)

I read the first Monster High book last year and loved it so I was happy when I saw this one was finally out. Cleo can't believe that her friends seem to be spending all of their time with Frankie and Melody. Frankie and Melody are the cause of their almost exposure and she can't stand them. Cleo doesn't think the Rads should come out and she will do anything to stop it if she can and to put herself back on top.

More of a 2.5 really.

Since I have quite a lengthy review on the first Monster High, I'll keep this one short-ish. Pretty much all my complaints from the first one are still there and actually growing.

I chose this book because I read the first one of the novel and thought the plot was very intersing. In this book, Frankie Stien is a R.A.D. (monster) has been exposed to normies because her head fell off at a dance. Melody Carver is a normie (human) who wants to help the R.A.D.s and make people understand that it's okay to be different. Like the first book, this was a cute, wholly average YA that I personally loved because it ties into a fandom I care about. I really did enjoy gaining Cleo's perspective, and the plot was suspenseful enough to keep me turning the pages.

In Monster High, we were left with a terrible cliffhanger with Melody trying to protect Jackson, while trying to save Frankie too. In The Ghoul Next Door, they create a plan and put it into action. It doesn’t work out quite the way they want it to, and before they know it, with the help of Brett they are making a documentary about teenage monsters to try to convince the public that they aren’t dangerous. It’s going to air on Channel 2, but of course they are going to blur out everyone’s faces, so they can’t be identified.

This part I disagree with, because wouldn’t they be able to recognize the monster’s voices or clothes with someone they sat next to in school? They could probably still be identified, but nice idea Frankie!

In the first book, the story shifts between Melody’s story and Frankie’s story. In the sequel, Melody and Frankie’s part is still told, but there is also Cleo’s side.

Cleo is spoiled, stuck up, arrogant, and selfish. But what else could you expect from a queen? Her dad returns from a trip to Egypt and brings home ancient jewels from Aunt Nefertiti. Before they know it, Cleo is going to be in a Teen Vogue photo shoot with the jewels. She’s so excited about it, and wants to share it with her friends. But her friends aren’t really interested in her at the moment, because they’re caught up with the documentary (it airs on the same day as the photo shoot, what a coincidence!). So she has to plot what to do so that her friends will stop focusing on the documentary, and more on HER!

That part reminds me of Mean Girls, because the queen is being dethroned and tries to get back on top. Classic chick-lit plot basically :)

One part I personally enjoyed was on page 23. (Read the quote on my blog)

I love how this book also has text message conversations, a poster, and a “missing” chapter. It makes for a unique read :)

I enjoyed chapter 14, which was written in Billy’s point of view. Billy is a ghost (which btw, they just kinda threw in the story! Lol) and so his picture doesn’t appear on the top of the page. And the writing fades at the end of the chapter. Nice effect!

I enjoyed all the pop culture references and how the book “explained” itself. I love books where sometimes you get the feel that it’s real, and there was a reason the book was written. At one part in the story, the characters get excited and say that someday maybe an author will write a teen series about them, and that Jackson drew doll versions of them. I like books that do this, and you feel like its real, even when you know its not.

Of course, there was another cliffhanger, which means that I’ll be reading the third book lol.

I would recommend this book to anyone who liked the first, or someone who wants a quick, light, fun read. It’s a guilty pleasure, and can be a bit dramatic, but if you aren’t bothered by the cheerleader-esque cattiness of it, you’ll enjoy it!(less)

This book was great! I bought it because after reading the first one, I had to go to the store and buy the next one in the series to see what happened to the characters.

Hello darlings, this is Cleo de Nile, the most fabulous RAD at school. I am thrilled that Lisi Harrison is featuring me in The Ghoul Next Door, the second book of the Monster High series. Following up immediately after the first Monster High book. This one starts out with Frankie still in trouble for losing her head, literally. Brett is in the hospital after the incident and all the RAD kids are still under parental watch after the dance fiasco. Frankie wants to make amends, while Cleo just wants to keep her top spot among her friends. Está escrita en tercera persona. Decidí leer este libro porque me gustó el desenlace que tuvo el primero, y pues no me iba a quedar con las ganas de continuar la historia. Algo que me gusta mucho de la saga de Monster High, son las carátulas de sus libros. Cada una muy al estilo de alguna de nuestras chicas RAD, además de que tienen diferentes texturas que los hacen más llamativos. El libro está dividido en capítulos, cada capítulo tiene un título, número y al igual que el primero, un dibujito haciendo referencia del personaje principal en el capítulo. La historia es contada cronológicamente. En este segundo libro, el libro es visto desde tres puntos de vista, Frankie, Melody, y se les une Cleo. ¡Sólo espero que en el tercer libro no sea contado por cuatro personas por favor! Demasiadas versiones de un mismo acontecimiento.

La autora utiliza un lenguaje informal, va dirigido a una audiencia infantil / adolescente. No me gustó tanto esta segunda parte como el primer libro, la historia se vuelve muy repetitiva. Lo mismo que leíste en el primero, pero ahora con la versión de Cleo… llega a ser demasiado de lo mismo. Este libro me aburrió mucho, en verdad sentía que no avanzaba. Al principio nos hablan de nuevo sobre lo ocurrido en el primer libro, luego algo así como “una reflexión grupal” de lo sucedido, y al final continúa la historia y apenas sucede algo interesante, se termina el libro.

Me gustaría poder decir algo bueno de este libro, pero no tiene nada de diferente al primero. Creo que lo único que me gustó fue la última página porque nos revelan algo muy interesante, y sin embargo no leería el tercer libro para conocer lo que sucederá después.

En conclusión, el primer libro de MH me gustó mucho, pero si tuviera que escoger entre los libros y las caricaturas… escogería las caricaturas. Me decepcioné. Sigue leyendo en Geek Marloz (less)

This book was just as good as the first Monster High. In this book, the RADs try another approach to coming out. I think that this was a good sequel and is worth reading a third book. Lisi is very creative with her situations. These books do seem to borrow a little bit from The Clique, but not so much that it's like OMG deja vu! I like that these books put a twist on the whole fitting-in thing.

This book is just as good as the first one. It continues the desperate plot to try and get the RAD's out in the open with exciting twists and turns. I was turning pages faster than I knew I could read. From the crazy characters, to the eye oppening secrets that come out in this book. I highly recommend this book and can not wait for the next book in this series.

Absolutly Adorable! Cute, sweet, and dramatic in all the ways a girl could ask for. Cleo is quite a bitch and very self absored. Frankie is a cute but navie ghoul. I still don't think she should get with Brett. I like DJ myself, but Billy is pretty awesome too. Melody is in for a huge surprise! I never would have guessed, but she is totally a siren. Once again, I am surprised that I liked this book as much as I did. I guess I shouldn't be shocked when I read the third one. I was happy that this book didn't name drop as bad as the first one. It was incredibly annoying in the first book. The author also does a great job of threading together the plot threads so that the story doesn't feel disjointed. For example, the cliffhanger in the first book is wrapped up pretty quickly, but that opens up new problems. I'm excited to see where the story...more

Más gracioso y con más historia que su antecesor.
Después de leer Monster High 1 y terminar con un gusto normal por el libro, tal vez haya sido que no tenía demasiadas expectativas pues está segunda parte me ha parecido mejor que la primera, desde lo gracioso que son algunas cosas hasta los diálogos de los personajes. Aunque si algo me gustó es el suspenso y el drama de la historia. Sigue siendo superficial y ligera, pero tiene unos giros que sorprendente gratamente.

Después de leer Monster High 1 y terminar con un gusto normal por el libro, tal vez haya sido que no tenía demasiadas expectativas pues está segunda parte me ha parecido mejor que la primera, desde lo gracioso que son algunas cosas hasta los diálogos de los personajes. Aunque si algo me gustó es el suspenso y el drama de la historia. Sigue siendo superficial y ligera, pero tiene unos giros que sorprendente gratamente.
Normalmente leo o escucho que estos libros están catalogados principalmente para lectoras jóvenes, pero debo decir que este libro quita esa etiqueta que muchos le ponen por culpa de la caricatura. Sé que la historia es superficial pero se desenvuelve de una forma que hace fácil la lectura, aparte de que conoces más a los personajes implicados que al igual que el primero son los RAD y las normi de Melody, Candace, Bekka y su amiga. Aunque ahora se une otro normi que cae bien cuando ya lo conoces.

La historia empieza con Cleo, pues con la portada podemos darnos cuenta que la participación de esta será bastante y así lo es, podría decirse que se vuelve la principal en este libro. Con esto me imagino que la autora empieza a inmiscuir a las tres amigas de Frankie para contarnos más de ellas y así mismo crear problemas relacionados con ellas o dicho de otra forma, problemas donde ellas se inmiscuyan más.

El primero es de Frankie, este segundo de Cleo y el tercero lo descubriremos pronto, aunque ya sé de quién trata por eso es que me imagino lo anterior, sobre el personaje que participa más.
Es un poco extraño en un principio pero desde cualquier ángulo se nota que las cuatro RAD principales tienen muchas cosas que contar ya sólo es cuestión de crear problemas, inmiscuirlas y agregar a Melody que debo decir es mi personaje favorito, es tan real (metafóricamente hablando) pues sus reacciones y pensamientos son coherentes, aunque por fuera sea una chica PERFECTA algo que no es por dentro, o eso creía...
Eso si, cambios de personalidad que te sorprenden y gustan sin pensarlo dos veces, pues la autora supo darle un toqué ligero pero “¡electrizante!” (XD)

Como ya dije la historia toma giros que sorprendente de una buena forma, así como no te escapas de sonrisas y risas, tampoco te escapas de gestos de sorpresa pues se revelan cosas que por lo menos yo no me esperaba. En un momento se volvió predecible pero sólo un momento, ese momento de cliché que en todo libro hay hasta que apareció algo que me dejo con los ojos cuadrados que dará para la tercera parte pero que la autora dejo mal inconclusa en este segundo tomo. Al igual, y lo mejor de todo es que Melody es más que una simple normi, al final del libro nos dan lo suficiente para quedarnos pensando que puede ser al igual que ella se queda en un estado de trance por ver una realidad que tendrá que descubrir pues no es cualquier cosa.

Así que una narración normal y ligera, unos giros excepcionales y un fondo de la historia que no conocíamos hacen de esta segunda parte digna de ser, aparte de conocer.
Por cierto, que tiene un diseño realmente bueno, difícil de ignorar y no sólo por fuera.

El único pero que le pondría y que no afecta a la mayoría de los lectores es que tiene una historia superficial y nada creíble, aunque siendo de este género es algo comprensible esto segundo. Lo que si no es tan comprensible es la narración pues puede dejar de ser “normal” y ser “muy buena”.(less)

Lisi Harrison obviously has a story to tell, one that I'm fairly interested in reading for fun. Unfortunately you won't find much of it in this book. The second installment in the Monster High series is nothing more than a distraction from the main characters/plot. Esta comunidad está conformada por Zombis, vampiros, hombres lobo, momias, tritones. Esta en especial, aunque las hay en todo el mundo, tiene como residencia el pueblo de Salem, bastante moderno, hay que decirlo.
Frankie Stein, la recién creada, y a quien su exceso de juventud le otorga demasiado ánimo y problemas, no sale de un problema para entrar a otro. El chico que le agrada, un normi que ama a los monstruos, se recupera después de la impresión que se llevó al arrancarle la cabeza a su cita del baile. Pero la odiosa Bekka, novia de dicho chico, y su amiga han prometido vengarse. Tienen material que muestra a uno de los chicos del grupo RAD mostrando su naturaleza.
Esto es un conflicto, porque, por un lado, los RAD quieren dejar de ser mirados como monstruos ante todo el mundo, dejar de ocultarse, de maquillarse o depilarse para llevar la vida entre normis. Quieren dejar de ser discriminados. Aunque yo habría creído que algo a lo que se le tiene miedo no puede discriminarse. Eso también, quieren que dejen de tenerles miedo.
En esta segunda parte de la serie se incluyen los pasos de Cleo de Nile, la hija del Egipto antiguo, cómo las cosas para ella, y para todos, forman un amasijo opresivo.
Me cuesta un poco hablar de esta historia, como siempre. Saben que a mí el tema ese de la popularidad me resulta terreno inexplorado, que nunca me he topado con él y hasta fantástico e imposible lo veo. Pero muchos lo usan como argumento de historias, este tipo de historias. Hay simpatía entre Melody, la normi, Frankie, la recién armada, y Cleo, la egipcia, pero de ahí a que entienda su forma de ser hay un gran camino.
El conflicto aquí es que siempre que las cosas parecen ir por buen camino, algo malo pasa y rompe el orden. ¿Cómo avanzar si todo corre con la misma suerte? Si no sabes en quién confiar y aquellos en los que has confiado tus secretos, a pesar de que intentan protegerlos, no lo consiguen.
Es verdad que la juventud, y toda esa energía, tornan las cosas llenas de emoción, para quien las vive, pero le quito el merito a Frankie y los demás, aunque esto los hace más reales para su edad, sobre querer cambiar algo de la noche a la mañana. Incluso si quieren comenzarlo, me resulta apresurada su forma de trabajar. Estos adolescentes monstruos no escribieron un amable comunicado de prensa a los normis, presentándose formalmente. No dijeron: Hola, somos los RAD, una única y amable comunidad de vampiros, hombres lobo, tritones, zombis, etc. que quiere ser tratada con normalidad.
Estos apresurados chicos llegan a un baile de disfraces con tema monstruoso, sin disfraz, porque no lo necesitan, y no les resulta muy bien. Tanto que provocan un toque queda, obligatorio según las autoridades de Salem, y enfurecen a un chica, de por sí loca, que es el rostro de la maldad.
Los RAD quieren salir, pero no por el gusto que originalmente todos creeríamos de los monstruos, no quieren provocar miedo, beber sangre, destrozar estómagos o morder cuellos, ellos quieren humanidad. Las cosas llevan tiempo, hay que entenderlo, y en este sentido muchísimo.
