Imagine a pan balance. Now imagine on one pan of the balance, there is a weight labeled “popularity”. On the other pan, there is a weight labeled “true feelings”. This pan balance continuously rocks back and forth, from the “popularity” weight being heavier then to the “true feelings” weight becoming heavier. Now, the balance steadies at points, with an obvious “heavier weight” indicated. This is the story of Danny Shine in The Loser List by H.N. Kowitt, the stereotypical middle school “geek”....more

I picked both of these titles up at the last Scholastic Book Warehouse Sale to add to the growing collection of “Wimpy Kid” read-alike books in my library. The “Wimpy Kid” books were by far the most popular, most highly circulated titles in my library last year. Close behind are the “Big Nate” series by Lincoln Pierce and “Dork Diaries” by Rachel Russell.
The main character in these books is Danny Shine and he is a geek. He loves anything at all that has to do with comics – either reading, drawi...more

When Danny runs afoul of class bully Chantal, he imperils his social standing, and that of his friend Jasper's, because she posts their names on the "loser list"... on the girls' bathroom wall. In a comedy of errors to remove it, Danny ends up in detention and starts running with low life Axl and his friends. At first, this improves Danny's image, which is all important in his quest to get Asia to like him, but when Axl steals a valuable comic strip from a store that Danny frequents, things get...more

"Give me that pen. Or I'll put your name on the loser list!" threatens Chantal. Why should Danny Shrine ("I'm no geek. I have a wide range of interests: reading comics, drawing comics, buying comics, and trading comics.") care if Chantal, self-appointed boss of the 7th grade, puts his name on the Loser List? He doesn't even know what the Loser List is. However, a mere two hours later, girls he doesn't even know are greeting him with, "Hi, loser." Then he accidentally starts a food fight in the j...more

Jake's Review: I really liked the illustrations and the way the book looks like it is journal. I think the book is more suited for an older boy who likes girls, because I thinks girls are gross. I think it's cool that he gets to go to comic book stores all the time. The book is funny but I think mom thought it was funnier because she kept snorting while reading it. I didn't like the bullies because they were really mean and they took advantage of Danny and stole stuff. I would like to read more...more

When 12-yr-old Danny Shine and his best friend and fellow comic geek Jasper end up on the Loser List in the girl's bathroom, Danny knows he needs to get off that list to have a chance with uber cool girl Asia O'Neill. Danny resorts to vandalism to clear the record, but ends up in detention with school bad boy Axl (Morris) Ryan - a bully who turns out to be interested in Danny's comic abilities. However, when Axl steals a valuable comic from one of Danny's friends and pins the blame on Danny, Dan...more

This book has a lot of comedy in it. It also has a big conflict. The main character gets on the loser list in the girls bathroom, and he doesn't know how to get it off. He got caught by the teacher and then he has to go to detention. It is the worst place for him to be with all of the big bad kids that can kick his butt. He is not exactly friends with any of them either, they all really don't like him. Find out what happens in detention and also find out if his name ever gets off the loser list...more

The Loser List began rather slowly, and I began to wonder if this graphic novel was again going to be a sad and sorry attempt to harness some of Jeff Kinney's Diary of a Wimpy Kid liquid goodness. I was so wrong.

Kowitt manages to weave some major life lessons (being true to yourself and loving your inner geekiness and true friendship are but two themes) into this hilarious tale about bullying and standing up for yourself in the end (look...two more themes!)

Actually, I laughed more with this one...more

What I wrote for my October Review & Evaluation:
This book by veteran author H. N. Kowitt would probably not exist but for the popularity of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books. No matter—the book is entertaining and fun to read. The plot centers on 7th grader Danny Shine as he makes his way through the popularity contest and sometimes degrading experience that is middle school. Danny finds himself on the “Loser List” and when he tries to erase his name from the list on the wall of the girls’ res...more

This was your average "be comfortable with who you are" young readers book. You can tell it's for young rweaders by the font selection of ridiculousness and the pencil drawings done on various pages as if completed by a 7th grader, which is the age of the main character, Danny. The book follows Danny Shine, who is a geek, and when he discovers that he's been put on the loser list in the girls bathroom, he tries to change his image. Who hasn't seen this storyline played out before? I know I've do...more

The Loser List is about a kid named Danny Shine. In one of Danny's classes Chantl, one of his enemies, wants his pen and try's to take it. She threatens to put him on the loser list so everyone will think he is a loser. Danny had never heard of it so he says that he will just erase it. Chantl told him that it was in the girls bathroom so he couldn't. After class he goes to the lunch room with his best friend Jasper. Jasper is a geek like him. Danny says that he doesn't know why people say he is...more

The Loser List - The Battle for Middle School Status!

Rating: 4 of 5 stars

Author: H.N. Kowitt
Format: Paperback

Danny Shine wasn’t at the top of Gerald Ford middle school’s social ladder, but he certainly wasn’t a bottom feeder either that is, until he has an argument with one of the tough girls. As pay back, she retaliates by adding his name to the “Loser List” posted on the girl’s bathroom wall. His status falling rapidly, Danny chooses a desperate measure – sneak in to the girls bathroom and era...more

Hmmm.

So with all they hype of the Wimpy Kid and Dork Diaries books it's hard to sell me on unoriginal "copies" of the originals.

The Loser List is just that to me.

You've got a "geek", a oddball best friend, the mean girl, and the "big guys" who beat the smaller, nerdier kids up. And to top it off, the main character in this book draws tattoos on the popular kids' arms. Sound familiar? Yeah, it happens in Dork Diaries.

Not to mention the super cool kid lingo the entire way through.

Now, by the end,...more

Ages 9 and up. Another notebook-with-illustrations geek story. Because he doesn't give his $12 pen to Chantal, Danny's name gets added to the "Loser List" in the girl's bathroom. What if secret crush Asia sees it? He can't let that happen, and conspires to infiltrate the girl's bathroom to remove it. Of course he's caught, and gets detention. With his worst nightmare, Axl. But he wins Axl's favor when he offers to draw Sharpie tattoos on him and his goons. Soon he's hanging out with the gang, bu...more

I enjoyed this one! I bought it kind of randomly because I had points to spend on Scholastic's website but I'm happy to say it's worth checking out. This is the story of Danny, a seventh grader, whose name ends up on the infamous Loser List in the girls' bathroom of his middle school. He thinks this is devastating for his reputation so he decides to go in there and cross it off and... well, that leads to all kinds of drama. I liked this because I thought the situations were surprisingly realisti...more

A good read-alike for Diary of a Wimpy Kid fans, this book stars Danny, a boy who's making his way through middle school. He's not the most popular kid in school, but he's not doing too badly... until his name makes its way onto the infamous Loser List in the girls' bathroom. In an effort to remove his name from the list, he falls in with Axl, the school's resident bad boy. But is life on the wild side as good as it seems?

A solid little book that may draw in reluctant readers, and one I actually...more

You know how a lot of books right now look kind of like Diary of a Wimpy Kid? Well, this one looks so much like it I'm a little surprised Mr. Kinney has not sued yet. A co-worker of mine assumed it was a spin-off character from the Diary books, but in fact it is the journal (complete with black and white line illustrations) of a very Greg Heffley-like boy named Danny and his attempts to get his name of the "Loser List", a list kept on a wall in the girl's bathroom. To be fair, it is pretty funny...more

This is a fun book to read. The font and drawings really make you feel that you are reading Danny's seventh grade journal.
Danny Shine is a seventh grader who finds himself being put on the "loser list" that is in the girl's bathroom. He loves to draw and has his favorite pen, when the class bully asks for it and is denied, she vows to put him and his best friend on the "loser list." This alters the rest of seventh grade for Danny. His purpose is to get off of the list which leads him through all...more

Part story, part journal which makes this a suitable readalike for fans of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. Danny is sent to detention after trying to remove his name from the loser list in the girls bathroom. In detention the bullies torment him until they figure out that Danny can draw, then they exploit his talents to suit their needs, which causes Danny to almost lose his best friend and get tangled up in a theft from his favorite comic store. I'd recommend this title for grades 3-5, especia...more

Umm. A quick waste of time for me and it felt like a copy of Diary of a Wimple Kid.
The characters were kind of annoying and the pictures were just, bleh. I think.

So, the kids in this book are what, seventh graders? Why the hell do they act like fricking high schoolers!?!?! Did anyone notice that in that picture of that guy being ripped apart and his guts coming out that one of the bullies hands are on the guys ass?
My friend pointed it out and I just laughed like crazy. Was it purposely put there...more

When things become popular, the knockoffs happen rather quickly. This book clearly wouldn't have existed without Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and, while clearly owing to Wimpy Kid, it ends up being that book for older kids and working pretty well.

The good is the story - you have a nerdy kid who is horrified when he's labeled a geek, and falls in with the wrong crowd at school in an attempt to rectify the situation. The story is fairly predictable as to where it goes from there, but the story is funny e...more

Dear Ms. Dansky,
I read 56 pages of the book the main character is Danny Shine.Everybody things that Danny is a geek but he has a fantastic talent. It is D-R-A-W-I-N-G. He likes comics so much that he spends his whole time for it. He likes: reading, drawing trading and buying comics. But one day when he accidentally starts a food fight at the cafeteria, his whole life gets ruined. His name gets written on the Loser List in the girls bathroom, gets detention for a whole week, loses his best friend...more

Normally they would not have talked to Danny but Danny is a awsome drawer and he shows them different things he can do. This book reminds me a lot of Diary of a Wimpy Kid. This is about a boy who gets caught trying to cross his name off of a loser list in the girls bathroom and gets sent to detention. He get picked on and made fun of until they learn that he can draw. This book is a good way to get students to start reading things that they are interested in. This would be a good book for late elementary students or early middle school students.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid readalike.

When Danny falls out with bully Chantal, he finds out he's been added to the Loser List on the girls' bathroom wall. He attempts to sneak in to remove his name but is caught and sent to detention. As if one bully isn't enough, he winds up on Axl's hit list but manages to impress Axl and his fellow Skulls with his artistic abilities. But hanging with the Skulls puts him in an even worse situation.

This was the first book I read in my quest to familiarize myself with books intended for tweens and teens. I'm also a teacher so reading books like this helps me suggest books to my students and know what they're talking about when they tell me about the books they read. I would recommend this book to anyone from 4th-8th grade. I gave myself a challenge to finish it and it took me about two hours to finish.
