This book is by the creator of the CSI franchise, and it's fairly obvious. Like CSI, this book is heavyhanded with its use of metaphor and awful puns, and it has loopholes that anyone with a vague knowledge of law will throw their hands up after reading. But the darndest thing is - they're actually kind of fun. There's a reason CSI has high viewership: it's just interesting enough to keep you coming back, just vaguely plausible enough that you don't change the channel. These books are kind of li...more

After reading half of Dark Prophecy, I was convinced that it was far and away better than its predecessor, Dark Origins. That feeling unfortunately fell by the wayside as the plot disintegrated into an unsatisfactory explanation of the antagonists, their motives, and their means to accomplish their actions. The protagonist Steve Dark is back, still struggling from the fallout from the first book, still unable to stop his urge to bring justice to killers. The formulaic structure and stereotypical...more

Although I like a good entertaining mystery, I usually shy away from books that seem to focus on the evil side of humanity without any depth or redeeming aspects. So I debated whether or not to read this book, since the writing wasn't anything special and it's a bit too much on the dark and heavy side for my tastes in mindless reading.

The one thing that did draw me to this book is that it calls itself a digi-novel, "an experience" that includes "digital cyber-bridges" (short motion picture scen...more

Zuiker is the creator of "CSI", & this second entry in the "Level 26" series is an exciting game of cat-&-mouse between a serial killer & the world's greatest manhunter. The first book tied into the "Sqweegel" episode of "CSI", whereas this book stands alone several years after the events of the first story.

This book (and its predecessor) are very un-"CSI" - it is more about the pursuit & anticipation than the analysis. Steve Dark is analytical, but not written to be overwhelming...more

*This review is for the book only. Unlike DARK ORIGINS, I choose not to watch the cyber bridges of DARK PROPHECY in order to streamline the text.

DARK PROPHECY is James Patterson like, almost two-dimensional cardboard characters slightly balanced by high octane thrills and hard hitting action sequences. This book felt very much like a TV episode (perhaps due to Zuiker’s CSI?) with condensed characterisation and an emphasis on the quick thrill. In DARK ORIGINS, the authors (Zuiker and Swierczynsk...more

From the creator of CSI comes the second “digi-novel” in the Steve Dark series. Although Steve Dark has left Special Circs, but is having trouble getting on with his life. Still trying to feel secure enough to reclaim a life with his daughter he somehow gets drawn into another series of grisly murders. Officially off the books and with a mysterious partner who has unlimited sources for everything, Steve runs a toe to toe footrace with Special Circs to stop the killers.

It is what it is, an entert...more

I haven't read the first in this series yet, but after reading Dark Prophecy, I will certainly be catching up on the series. The characters are as flawed as the killers they hunt, yet somehow they rise above it all to catch these dregs of our society.

Throughout the book, the author adds little snippets of Dark's former life, and why he quit his job as a manhunter. Dark is such a fascinating character that I can't wait to see how his story starts out. This is the kind of book you take on a plane...more

Klappentext:
Se...more

This is the second novel in a series about Steve Dark who is a member of an elite government task force specializing in serial killers. The book is fast paced, if a little flat and mundane. Most of the characters seem rather ordinary for this genre, and the killings by The Tarot Card Killers are not as frightening as one would expect. I thought the most compelling aspect of the book is how deeply involved in our private lives the government has become after the events of September 11,th 2001. Th...more

It's not that I didn't like the story line. I actually liked the idea of a tarot card killer (although not nearly as fascinating as Squeegal). What I didn't like about this sequel was the online clips. In the first book, you got to see Squeegal and various action shots and killing scenes. I felt like I was being shown something that wasn't in the book. But with Dark Prophecy, all the video clips were of Steve's tarot readings (with some flashbacks). That's just boring. I didn't feel that it gave...more

This is a series that I really don't want to end. The internal struggles of Steve Dark and his balance of going over the edge is interesting to read.

As with the last one, there are video "bridges" that you can go watch that have been written and directed by Anthony E Zuiker (CSI Creator). While it takes away a little bit from the book to go and watch, they add a whole level of immersion into the story. This books' series added Justine Bateman as Hilda, the Tarot Card reader.

The killers in this b...more

This was my first Level 26 book. I really enjoyed it. I'm usually not into this kind of book, mystery involving government agency stuff. But, it was very compelling, you gain real sympathy for Steve Dark and are able to see his growth from the beginning to end. It was quite difficult to put the book down, and was frustrating to have to stop reading because my break at work was over. I would recommend it. It may have made more sense had I read the first book, however, I do plan to do that soon an...more

Terrible book. Why do some authors sell their main characters as heroes when they get them to act so dum.
The writing leaves a lot to be desired and some plot elements are just too unrealistic or plain stupid. For example: a female FBI agent is unable to shoot (misses) a large villain running up the stairs towards her, however, with the same villain on top of her, choking her out, she is able to shoot and destroy the mobile phone he dropped at the bottom of the flight of stairs... Yeah, right!!!...more

Vor...more

This is the second installment of Zuiker's diginovels, and it was good, but not perfect. I have read the first Level 26 book and I was totally horrified! What sickminded person could come up with such twisted murder scenes?! This book though...not too shocking. And not very Level 26 either. Which is why it did not completely blow me away.

The concept of the diginovel is original: you read a number of pages and than you enter a code online to watch a movie that enhances your reading experience. Wh...more

Unlike the prequel, the villain in this book isn't really fascinating or impressive to me. Okay, the tarot killing is some kind of awesome. Especially with the details written. But still, it changes a bit too much, the character of Steve Dark. I mean, really, new age? Steve Dark? Come on...

The videos also aren't as good as what book one have. :/

Personally, I feel like the idea is being toned down. Somehow, that's the impression I get when I finished this book.

I liked the first book in this series, Dark Origins, enough to proceed to this second one. The murderer is less creepy than Sqweegel, but the story as a whole is just as good, if not slightly better. The video clips that support the text are less punchy, less or a requisite to enjoying the tale, but better made and their interspesion in the book is more accomplished than it was in Dark Origins. Hughly recommended. I read it in a day, including viewing all the clips.

This is the second book written by the guy behind CSI. I was a good story with a lot of twists and turns, but I missed the CSI aspect of things. The first one had a bit more of the investigators in it, though not our friends from the TV show. It did however feature a criminal who appeared on an episode of the show. Kind of made some of it easier to picture. What I'd really love is a book featuring the old CSI characters.

Good follow up to the first in the trilogy. It'll be interesting to see where they Ke the Steve Dark character after this. Also, the Lisa Graysmith character is a fine addition. For the first time I watched one of the 'video bridges' they built into the stories. Though Indidn't see him, I thought Michael Ironsides is an interesting choice for Riggins. Not what I pictured reading the book, but I doubt I'll be able to read the third book without visualizing him in that 'role.'

A second book by the creator of the CSI fanchise who again used the format of "digi-novel" where the reader can watch a short motion picture video which depicts several chapters that have just been read--what a cool idea!! Another good story following crime-scene tactician, Steve Dark, as he goes from coast-to-coast tracking the trail of tarot cards to find another diabolical killer.

So I liked the story and thought it was pretty interesting BUT it really wasn't what I expected from a Level 26 book. There were no level 26 killers in this book. I felt like it was a typical serial killer story that happened to have Steve Dark in it. I LOVED Dark Origins and just felt kind of "meh" about this story...simply because I expected more from it :( What a disappointment!

Not just as good as the first book but still held my attention. Steve Dark returns as a retired serial killer hunter but doesn't take long for him to get sucked back into that world again. He joins up with another government agent to chase down another potential predator. I enjoyed it but wasn't as engrossed as I would like to have been.
Dufour
Terrible, terrible, TERRIBLE novel. Which is so disappointing given the interesting way the book unfolds as a "digi-novel" on the iPad. I bought this primarily to experience Zuiker's take on integrating multiple forms of media into a single storytelling experience. The presentation is extremely innovative.

Unfortunately the story itself is written at the quality of a mass market grocery store aisle paperback. It's cheesy, overwrought, and outright stupid in many places. The drama is retarded and...more

Not as thrilling as the first one but still very interesting.
We easily guess that Steve Dark won't stay out of catching bad guys long but the story is captivating and the little videos enable us to see some parts of Steve Dark that we don't know and that are not described in the book.
I've just seen that this is a trilogy and that the 3rd book will be out on 29/12/11 a,d I'm eager to read it !

Another Level 26 interactive novel. This time, the video bridges are a short film. The story unfolds as Steve Dark is having a tarot reading. Each video section is a new card, and sets you up for the next chapter of the book. Spot the actors - Justine Bateman and Michael Ironside appear.
Killerbarbie

I had high hopes for this book as I loved the first and I was not disappointed! That being said I did expect a bit more of a twisted plot but none the less I was still hooked. The main character is that mysterious man that makes a girl blush!
