Convincing police dialog, scary murder scenes, a likeable and skillful female protagonist and a pleasing cast of coworkers and friends characterize Christine Huson’s Winnebago County mysteries—I just wish there were more of them. An Altar by the River is third in the series and, like the others, gives readers intriguing glimpses into evil-doers’ minds while following Sergeant Corinne Aleckson's investigation. A young man has threatened to kill himself and Corky hopes to save him. The fact that h

I was given a copy for free in exchange for an honest review. An Altar by the River is the third book in the series. This is a more haunting darker tale. It involves Satanic cults. The story gives you a look into evil- peoples minds while following Sgt Alecksons investigation. A young man has threatened to kill himself and Corky hopes to save him. The fact that he wants to do it on Satan's Altar leads us into the Dark forces of the occult. A darker more haunting read than the first two books. If ...more

Chris' third book kept me riveted to my seat just like the first two. The unique combination of folksy, small town happenings, romance, mystery and suspense in the Winnebago County books are perfect for my tastes. The characters are appealing, the mysteries are compelling, and the endings, very satisfying. I highly recommend all three of Chris' books.

This is a very scary, engaging, regional suspense novel. What I learned about certain kinds of cults was priceless. The protagonist is a charmer, as are members of her posse.
