Doc Ford is a man I could easily have a crush on. And there's his buddy, Tomlinson, who is a free spirit with a wicked sense of humor. Both are smart and take care of themselves, each other and their friends.
There seem to be two stories going on, but they are intertwined. There are some Wisconsin mob guys down taking advantage of the last hurricane's destructive path. Doc wants to set them straight after the mob guys take on some of Doc's buds.
Then there's the the mystery woman Tomlinson intro...more

Starts out with a confrontation scene that stretches out for about 50 pages (with some tidbits on salvage rights, electrolysis, and hurricanes sneaked into the creases), and this had me worried that here, again, was one of these authors who helps out 80 pages of plot with padded scenes that try to get things to a salable length. Thankfully, the book gets better--much better.

In comes the neo-noir mood, with some great action and suspense, capped off with a rather nicely-conceived mystery. I waite...more

This story takes place on the gulf coast of Florida, when a wreck appears due to a Category 4 hurricane which has reshaped the ocean bottom. Marine biologist Doc Ford, together with his rather unusual friends, try to solve the mystery of the wreck with very interesting artifacts that they rescue from the bottom, while they fight off some very bad men also interested in their find. Also involved is a mysterious "older" woman who wants to fund the retrieval of the objects, which seem to be connect...more

Dark Light by Randy Wayne White (G.P.Putnam's Sons 2006)(fiction - mystery) is the first one I've tried by this author. I like him very much! He writes in the style of John D. MacDonald. His sleuth is Marion "Doc" Ford, who is a collector of marine specimens and who lives on Sanibel Island, Florida in a stilt house over the water. Doc Ford is also apparently a spy or a CIA operative of some type, but this book only hinted at that. This book featured Nazi relics recovered from a wreck and an evil...more

Once again Doc Ford tells us about the hurricane of 1944, a much more severe hurricane than that of 200? which hit Sanibel. A new development and marina near Sanibel has taken a hard hit by the hurricane and the unscrupulous owner is attempting to seize all boats. Elsewhere on Sanibel Tomlinson and Doc Ford meet a mysterious woman who "winters" there who somehow may be entangled with the marina owner.

His books tell us much about the development of this area of Florida as well as hurricanes.

"Dark Light"By Randy Wayne White Takes place in the aftermath of a devastating hurricane.Setting and Characters are very nicely done! This book was great!!! It had everything! It was set in the Florida Keys and told of ship wrecks, sunk German subs,Nazi emblems ect...It also told about a lot of famous people who came to the Keys for recreation. Also about the evil in some people. It kept me waiting to see what was going to happen next! It had a lot of history and a lot about the people good and b...more

This is a new author for me and I chose to read this book because I am somewhat familiar with the setting, which made it fun to read. The story is set in modern day Fl but involves early history of the area at the time that Edison lived in the area. It involves history related to WW II and Nazi history in Fl. It is also the story of a woman and a man both in history and in present time. Well-written. Good read.

This one was better than White's last which I didn't even finish, but still not nearly as good as his earlier books in my opinion. Like Lee Child I think White needs a change of pace. The Nile monitor lizards in the book are actually becoming quite a problem in parts of Florida - very tough customers.

This sucker took a while to get off the ground. Even when it did, this was generic and flat. It also managed to force moments of his religious (or lack thereof) beliefs. It was awkward and intentional. It held enough interesting moments though to give it two rather than 1 stars.

This was a strange one. Not your usual Doc Ford adventure - very dreamlike with reality 'iffy'. Takes place immediately following the previous book with Doc still suffering from his injuries & kind of 'out of it'. Mysticism, ghosts, spirits. Is this whole book just a dream?

Oh my goodness! Books set in/around Sanibel Island, Florida! Sanibel is absolutely my favorite vacation place so I loved that this excellent suspense thriller was set there. It made it especially fun to read.

The storyline was promising, but the ending was a bit anticlimactic and a bit of a let-down. I felt that it could have been so much more. It does make me curious to see what this author's other books are like, though.

Not my favorite Doc Ford book...I had a hard time getting involved with the characters of Bern and Chestra...it was very dark and left little room for Tomlinson to be humorous...

The first few "Doc Ford" adventure novels were extremely entertaining. However, since then they are sounding like "more of the same".

Typical Doc. Ford thriller. Deals with the aftermath of a recent hurricane,German activity on the west coast of FL during WW II,and possible ghosts and spirits.Found the hurricane and WW II info interesting. The possible ghosts, etc confused things.

This one read almost like a ghost story with a mystery dating back to WWII. Lots of fascinating information about hurricanes. Over the top villain.

Dr Ford is an interesting character. The concept kept you going. The first few pages had me hooked
Tara
Shipwreck off coast of Sanibel Island is connected to an old lady who lives near the lighthouse.

I've read this once twice. Doc Ford books are best when he and Tomlinson are paired.

This book seems a bit better than the last couple of Doc Ford stories I have read, but still falls short of White's earlier goes. This one had a bit of of a metaphysical feel to it had me wondering just who the woman in the old grey house really was. The history of Florida during WWII was a nice touch, but you can always count on RWW to teach us something. A cut above his latest, but not his best IMHO.

I enjoyed this book
as the story revolved
around Florida hurricanes.
The plot wasn't as exciting
as some of White's others.

Love Randy's writing. Been reading him since his Outside Column days.

I really wanted to like this book because it is set in Sanibel. But I did not like the writing and the main character, Doc Ford, took a while to appreciate. This author has several books set in Sanibel / Naples / Captiva / Ft Myers area. I may try one more and see.
Steve Snyder
More difficult to finish than previous White novels.
Lou
One of the better Doc Ford books I've read. Two seemingly independent plot lines merge surprisingly toward the end. I always enjoy the interactions among Doc's pals.
