When the Israeli Embassy in Rome is attacked by suicide bombers the Israeli Secret Service investigate. They discover that this attack is only one in a chain planned against Jewish targets and one of their former agents, Gabriel Allon who now works as an art restorer in Venice, is under threat of assassination as part of the campaign. Allon and his girlfriend, a field agent for the Service, are brought back to Israel where Allon becomes involved in the search for the terrorists.

In keeping with the previous Daniel Silva novels I've read, this more then ever maintains his high standard.
As always we are taken on a trip to lands as diverse as Italy and Israel, the story in this instance starts in Venice, where Gabriel Allon who is a part time hitman for the 'Office', which is another term for the Secret Intelligence Agency. He has an elaborate cover occupation as an art restorer, which is were we find him in a church on a major project.

I'm not usually a reader of spy thrillers but I picked this one up at the library on a whim and I'm very glad I did. I was sucked in from the get go and could hardly put the book down.
Gabriel is a great character, very much a 'reluctant hero', the plot is complex but not so complicated you can't follow it, the cast of characters are various yet distinct. Some very interesting personalities in this book!

The latest installment of the Gabriel Allon novels is great, perhaps the best to date. If you enjoy political intrigue, well rounded characters, suspense and good writing pick up a volume in this series by Daniel Silva. What makes these novels so good is the humanness that Silva injects into his characters. Though they find themselves in extraordinary circumstances you can relate to their very human feelings and actions. The small details are what make Gabriel such an interesting main character....more
This books goes deeper into Gabriel's past and delves into his open emotional wounds about his wife, son, lover... it is simply remarkable as the reader learns that Gabriel was a young assassin chosen to be a part of the Black September operation. If you've seen "Munich", you'll love this story!
An explosion in Rome destroys the Israeli embassy, and Shamron sends Gabriel Allon after those responsible. But Allon soon discovers that his cover has been blown, putting not only his life but that of Chiara, his Italian lover, into jeopardy.[return][return]This is the context of what may be the last in the Gabriel Allon series. If so, it is an exciting and fitting end to the best international spy/thriller series in the genre. There are enough twist, turns, and unexpected revelations to sat...more
I am totally hooked on Daniel Silva and this series of modern-day middle-east terrorism. In Prince of Fire he uses historical characters including Yassir Arafat to weave an intriguing tale of the current Palestinian/Isreali battle for the Holy Land. Each book in the series continues to build on the story of hero Gabriel Alon, his wife, his lover and the Isreali "Office" of counterterrorism. He also gives the anit-heroes/Palestinian terrorists some depth and uses convincing arguments...more
This is not the best book that Silva has done. There is lots of history in this book. Most of this is correct and it is in keeping with what actually happened in the Israeli/Palestinian conflict.
Unfortunately, it takes away from the story. The story almost seems secondary to the historical perspective of the story line. Even though it is a Gabriel Allon book, it seems that there is lack of focus in this book, where it drifts along. Not as focused or as quick moving as the rest of t...more

My 3rd Daniel Silva novel featuring Gabriel Allon, the Israeli intelligence officer/assassin. This one finds Gabriel pulled back into The Office to track down the terrorists who bombed the Israeli Embassy in Rome. Silva does his usual masterful job interweaving facts and actual events with the story line, making the read both educational and an on-the-edge suspense thriller. A recommended read. However, the person who first suggested I read Silva told me to go back and start at the beginning...more
(3.5) After focusing his previous Allon works on Nazi ghosts, Silva directs Gabriel to confront Palestinian ones with mixed results. I felt the story, while very interesting, was stretched a little too thin for all the author was trying to pack in (and the conclusion was far too abrupt). If I were reading this as a standalone, I'd probably give it 4, but I hold Silva to a higher standard and it wasn't really met here. Mind you, it's not a bad novel, it was a good, thrilling espionage read like t...more
Prince of Fire by Daniel Silva is the fifth book in the Gabriel Allon series. Unlike the previous books, this one takes place mostly in Israel as oppose to Europe.
Art restorer Gabriel Allon is, once again, called to action, one last time (once again), by the Israeli intelligence service. A truck bomb exploded in the Israeli embassy in Rome, however the Israelis obtained a computer disk from the terrorists in which they discovered pictures of Allon and his lover as well as n...more

I find Gabriel Allon to be one of the most interesting, multi-dimensional characters in contemporary literature and Silva's writing to be deep, thoughtful, compassionate and poetic. In Prince of Fire we find Allon in a bad situation, his cover as an art restorer is blown and he has to abandon the work that he loves in Venice. One of the things I love most about Silva's writing is that he manages to alternate illuminating, in-depth background passages with breathless, fast-paced sequences. I find...more

I don't how much of the backstory of "Prince of Fire" is fact-based, but I did enjoy this story immensely. Living in Cameroon, we knew a lot of Israelis and in particular, one of my classmates was named Sharon. She ended up living in Germany, and then getting her medical degree to work back in Israel. She was an incredibly brave person - it was a great tragedy then that she came to work in the State and was killed in a traffic accident after only being married for a few months. Rem...more
This is the first Daniel Silva novel I have read and I enjoyed it. His style reminds me of Forsyth and John Le Carre. In particular I liked the historical context of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. Gabriel Allon is recalled to duty from his peaceful life as an art restorer in Venice when the Israeli Embassy in Rome is destroyed by a suicide bomber. There follows a cat and mouse duel between Allon and Khaled, opponents of equal status in the war of attrition.
Another great book in the Gabriel Allon series. This is the last one of his I have checked out and now I must read the mountain of other books I have before checking out another one! If you are just starting out to read these books, I recommend you read them in order. There's characters galore [with alias:] but they appear in each of his books so after the first book you read you will spend more time enjoying the plot rather than figuring out who is who!
I love to listen to audio books while traveling. I listened to this one on my recent trip to Wilmington, NC. Having read (or heard) 4 - 5 Gabriel Allon books, I feel like I know the characters and their personal struggles in life. In addition to being engaged and intrigued with the action and suspense, I have learned more about the history of the Holocaust and the roles various countries played in the atrocities.
Silva is a very good author.

This is another really good book from Silva, featuring Gabriel Allon tracking down Israel's enemies. A bombing of the Israeli embassy in Italy leads to Allon being called back into service again. This time he is after Khaled, a descendant of a line of warriors fighting the Israelis since before the Separation of Palestine/Israel. Time is ticking as Allon races the clock to stop another terrorist attack designed to coincide with the anniversary of the destruction of Khaled's home village. Sil...more
I went bact to reading Daniel Silva after a presentation at my book club. I don't remember if I had a reason for stopping reading his books. I enjoyed this book immensely. Not only do I like the protagonist and the contnuing characters, but also the history learned in each book. I find Silva's books beautifully written and thoroughly researched. I can't wait to read the next one.
A terrorist attack in Rome and a discovery of a safehouse leads the Israeli's to believe that Gabriel Allon's cover is blown. Realizing the terrorist is Khaled, an adopted son of Arafat, Gabriel sets out to eliminate him. However Khaled has set up Gabriel, kidnapped his wife Leah (from the pschiatric hospital she lives at) and set him up to be blown away in a Paris train station.

Good story, but I did not like this one as much as the last two Gabrial Allen novels. I think it was because the Arab names were too similar to each other so I got confused on who was who (I know that really makes me sound smart), also they all have alias's that Silva sometimes refers to them as their real name and sometimes as their alias.
Gabriel Allon's 5th adventure takes him from Italy to Egypt to France with stops in Sardinia and ultimately to Israel. He chases a terrorist who carries on his father's and grandfather's mission to destroy Israel anyway he can. Silva lets us see into motivations and feelings of the Palestinian terrorists. Lots of action but, as we all know, no easy answers.
A solid entry in the Gabriel Allon series, and one that focuses on trade craft and the grittier aspects of espionage. Unfortunately - and I'm not entirely certain why - "Prince of Fire" is also somewhat unengaging. It seems as if others, as well as the author, have been down this road before.

Excellent! Silva is superb in his stories. Always full of insight and intrigue. This is a fantastic series, an Israeli 24, if you will. I especially enjoyed the philosophy, history and art restoration intertwined to make another Gabriel Allon operative assignment keep me on the edge of my seat, the saga continues...
I am very surprised at how this author matured as a writer. His early works were laughable, they were so bad. Full of cliches and bad plot lines. But these Gabriel Aron books are much more subtle and nuanced. These books made me embark on a reading of Israeli history.
Excellent; Continuing character: Gabriel Allon; an attack on Jews in Italy and the fact his cover as an art restorer has been blown, brings Gabriel back to Israel and then onto the trail of the terrorist responsible - with his injured wife in the middle
