I never liked Dickens as a novelist and I don't like his stories much better as a play--a NINE-HOUR play. That said, at least David Edgar's adaptation moves along more quickly than any Dickens novel I've ever read. If Dicken's had written the play himself, no doubt it'd be approaching 20 hours in length.

Ah, well. On to Part II, I suppose...

Pretty long as far as plays go. Can't compare to the original; haven't read it, but the play is in regular Dickensian/social commentary/satire style.

PRCs Reps. This is long. And Dickens. And narrative. And long.

David Edgar (born 26 February 1948) is an English playwright.

Edgar was born in Birmingham into a family with longstanding links to the theatre. His father and mother both acted at the Birmingham Rep before moving into broadcasting, and by the age of five Edgar had written his first play and performed it in a 12 seat theatre his father built for him in his back garden.
