Coranne (The Best Books Ever)
First of all, I was very taken by the cover. Typically this kind of fiction has the same basic cover: a young woman, made up to look like she lived in a certain historical period, holding some sort of prop and smiling saucily at the camera, or if it is even older fiction- her head may be entirely chopped off! I liked this picture- it made me curious about what the book was about. (And I thought the model had a striking resemblance to Kate Hudson).

This was a very enjoyable read. It had a predicta...more

After reading Hearts Awakening, Delia Parr was poised to be one of my new favorite writers. I was dismayed but not dissuaded by her scant three novels that piqued my interest, might I add I most certainly judge a book by its cover while ordering online. Quickly ordering the other two, as I had already read one of the three, I was more than excited to receive Hidden Affections a few days prior. It was my genre of choice, historical fiction, with a pair of lovers who brought together by unfortunat...more

DISCLOSURE: I was provided a copy of Hidden Affections by the publisher Bethany House. I was not paid nor required to write a positive review and the opinions I have expressed are my own.

I thought this book was going to be the typical boy meets girl and Oops!, they find themselves having to marry to prevent a scandal. However, this book wasn’t completely like that.

The way the hero and heroine meet, and end up married was different. It didn’t follow the typical which made the book more interestin...more

The picture on the back cover of this book was all I needed to see to make me look forward to reading this book. The picture shows a pair of chairs in front of a warm fireplace. The reader is looking through a frosty window on a cold day, but the scene inside is warm, cozy and romantic. That was exactly the kind of story I was expecting from Hidden Affections, and that is exactly what I got.

Delia Parr has written a story that felt like a warm blanket on a cold day. This was a story that I reall...more

The plot premise to “Hidden Affections” grabbed my attention and that coupled with a great cover (smile), I decided to give the book a try.

The first half of the story was intriguing, watching these polar opposite characters, thrust into a marriage of convenience, of the most extreme form (have to read the book to find out) kept me wondering what was going to happen in their relationship.

The secondary characters, especially the housekeeper, were a delight. Her spice even added a bit of the humor...more

“Annabelle Tyler may have hoped she would marry again someday, but she never dreamed she would be wearing handcuffs during the ceremony when she did.” Ah I love a good opening line to a novel and I would say that Delia Parr’s Hidden Affections delivers that attention grabber opening line pretty well. I also might add that the cover is quite lovely as the model looks a lot like Kate Hudson! Anyway, on to the book- Annabelle Tyler and Harrison Graymoor find themselves in a bit of a pickle. Because...more

Hidden Affections by Delia Parr is a novel that whisks you away and when it's over you wish you could go back for more.

Set in 1831, Annabelle Tyler and Harrison Graymoor are in a rather sticky situation. Not only are they handcuffed together, but they are being forced, at gun-point, by the local sheriff, to get married!

Sound crazy? I thought so too, but morals back then were something people took seriously and when a young lady looks like she is about to lose her reputation ... well...the only t...more

Delia Parr has quickly become one of my favorite Christian Historical Romance authors. Each of her stories has what I consider to be a unique element to it, and usually that element serves to pull me into the story even deeper. In this particular story, main character Annabelle has been forced to marry a man she barely knows simply because they had to spend the night together in the wilderness after their stagecoach was robbed. Their rescuers believe they are salvaging her reputation by forcing...more

One thing I've noticed from reading two of Delia Parr's novels is that she really can create some intriguing plots! Hidden Affections is the story of a forced marriage between Annabelle Tyler and Harrison Graymoor. From the very beginning the reader is thrown into a mixed-up world where the rich and charming Harrison has no choice but to wed the sweet but secretive Annabelle. Let me tell you, it's one of the strangest shot-gun weddings you'll ever encounter!

This book isn't a light summer read--i...more

I recieved this book from Bethany House to review. I was really excited since I love books by Bethany House and the writers who write for them.
Hidden Affections by Delia Parr was a first read of her works for me. Parr begins her story with a surprising opening plot. The characters are both written and developed very well. As both story and characters evolve the reader interest is maintained. I felt as I read Hidden Affections that Parr paid attention to detail more than I have experienced at ti...more

I really enjoyed this third book written by Delia Parr. Hidden Affections is a sweet love story about two people who don’t want to fall in love ever again, because they both have lost in love.

It talks about divorce in the 1800’s, which wasn’t something that was done and when it was the divorced people were shunned and couldn’t work in certain jobs.

Hidden Affections also talks about a forced marriage that neither Harrison or Annabelle want or should have happened. They are married in name only a...more

Period films are some of my absolute favorite things to watch because they bring back a time gone by when life seemed a bit more slower and a lot more romantic. It's the same for historical fiction, everything just seemed more romantic. Realistically speaking I know that 200, 100 years, even 50 years ago life was a lot more complicated and I *probably* couldn't have survived 5 days in the 1800s without running water or electricity but the mystique of things unknown still draws me to boo...more

I am not usually a fan of books like these but this one was lent to me by a friend and it wasn't bad. It was quick and easy. A couple in the 1800s wakes up handcuffed to one another and end up....well, I won't spoil it. The book was mindless entertainment but it wasn't terrible.

A fan of Delia Parr I was eager to find there was a book of hers I hadn't read yet. However it left me wanting. While I believe it was well written, I felt as if the characters didn't really connect with each other, and I didn't really connect with them.

Dealia Parr is a great author and this book did not disappoint. I could hardly put this down. I was so disappointed when I had to stop reading to go do other things because I didn 't want to put this book down.

I enjoyed reading this book, but I was disappointed that the ending stopped when it did- I was hoping for an epilogue, or a longer ending than what was written. Other than that, I thought it was good.
Judy Bullard
Good reading. Again, the ending was very quick - may one page!!! I would have liked to have an Epilog to read - you know, a little more of how they settled in to married life!!
Alyssa
Fun novel about a marriage forced by gunpoint that turns into love despite the many obstacles in their hearts and with society. I enjoyed this read.

2.5 stars. This was an okay Christian Romance. I found it lacking in both the Christian and Romance department. I've read better.
