bought this from the bookstore in darlinghurst a couple of weeks ago, and it's stayed on my person ever since - it really is small enough to fit in the actual pocket of my winter coat.

pema chödrön's writing is the perfect thing to read in these little pieces - it's dense with insight even as it's simple and easily grasped, & after i started reading it i felt my attention shifting in interesting ways.

this is the thing i read a couple of years ago that stuck with me & made me think it migh...more

Pema Chodron , a Buddhist nun, writes about spirituality in everyday terms, in a way that’s practical, simple and applicable. The book is comprised of 108 short selections for on-the-go inspiration. And inspire it does. Since its purchase, I've made reference to it a few times rereading passages that struck a chord. .For instance, on page 60, in entry #38 (called ‘No Happy Ending’) she quotes her teacher once saying to her “I don’t know why you came here, but I want to tell you right now that th...more

I love Pema ( my pocket Pema too.) Her words are introspective without being preachy or flighty and even if one is not a practicing Buddhist, she speaks both eloquently and practically in a way that presents living life with all its nuance and its hugeness a little bit differently....

Pema Chodron is a Buddhist nun who writes and gives seminars on self-improvement that are refreshingly free of any doctrine or agenda. Her real idea is for people to look within themselves with mindfulness and open themselves up to their own basic nature, because as she sees it, people can never truly care for others if they do not care for themselves. This short book has excerpts from her other works, offing something akin to a "greatest hits" album with short pithy passages of a page or two on...more

If you are looking for a "best of for the Buddhist mind", this little book is perfect. The "pocket Pema" (as I enjoy calling it) is a book I have read at least four times and read a little bit each day in order. Pema Chodron has a beautiful writing voice and delivers messages about confronting fear, learning compassion, living in the present moment, and many many other Buddhist principles to guide ANYONE to become a warrior to the awakened heart (Bodhisattva).

I would recommend this book for begi...more

I wanted to post a random message from this wonderful little book so I closed my eyes and opened the book to any page. Here is the message:

Every day we could think about the aggression in the world, in New York, Los Angeles, Darfur, Iraq, everywhere.

All over the world, everybody always strikes out at the enemy, and the pain escalates forever.

Every day we could reflect on this and ask ourselves, "Am I going to add to the aggression in the world?"

Every day, at the moment when things get edgy, we...more

Now is the right time for me to absorb and truly understand the teachings of Buddhism. Its emphasis on mindfulness, becoming friends with yourself, and learning to not cause suffering by trying to avoid pain and struggle, but rather to work with it and be in each moment as life comes, in every form. Truly truly enlightening for me. I am not preaching or trying to tell anyone else to read this, but it is doing wonders for me, because it is truthful for me.

I've been studying Buddhism a lot lately, so I really wanted something small that I could always carry with me and that would be an accessible way to remind myself of the important stuff.

This is just the right fit. Each "story" is one to three small pages long, but even in that short space, it gets at the heart of the issue. I've read through all of it, and now I can't wait to be able to refer to certain passages when I'm having trouble.

I really enjoyed this little book. Unlike other spiritual/self-help books, it acknowledges that we all have bad days, bad emotions, bad thoughts...and that it's okay. It helps you understand who you are and what you are feeling. It never suggests that you should strive to be anything but yourself...and that whoever you are is who you are and that is more than enough.

"Life is a good teacher and a good friend [...] Nothing ever sums itself up in the way the we like to dream about. The off-center in between state is an ideal situation, a situation in which we don't get caught and we can open our hearts and minds beyond limit [...] p.8

A great at-a-glance guide to some of the best teaching of Pema Chodron. A nice thing to keep on hand during stressful or tough times and perfect for sharing. Pema's writings are great for those of us who are not spiritual but enjoy an enlightened word or two.

Great book to have to read while meditating, whether in the morning or at the end of a long day. I've learned a lot from the wisdom and insight she offers. The chapters are great for journal-ing and reflecting on past/current life experiences.

I got this to introduce myself to Chodron's writings. It's an excellent, broad, rich compilation of her wisdom, in small enough bites to absorb a little at a time.

I love this little book! Since it's all just excerpts from Pema's writings, it's perfect to read one prior to my meditation session. I will be using this little book for years.

I read a page from this every day before meditation-so have not read all-but will be reading from it daily for quite some time. Love it!
