I used this as an supplementary text in my animal studies class, and have mixed impressions. It's a reasonably comprehensive overview of various thinkers' positions on the moral status of animals, the history of animal ethics, and different topical issues (animals as: food, research subjects, the hunted, captives, etc.). But at times it seems sort of randomly stitched together ("x says this, y says this, z says this").
