I loved this book. I loved the series. I love the characters. I love the action and the magic! I'm begging Marie Rutkoski to eventually write more. I recommend this series; this author; to any one of any age that loves adventure, magic, budding love, good vs evil.... etc... Such enjoyable reads!

Though there are certainly people who would argue otherwise, I have always considered the Kronos Chronicles to be a MG or middle-grade series. (MG being on one end of the Young Adult spectrum.) Not that the series was lacking in sophistication nor depth of character, but because the books were outstanding, and yet still appropriate for younger readers.

In fact, in my opinion Marie Rutkoski is one of THE best MG authors. She can tell a whomping good story; make it engaging for teens as well as adu...more

I enjoyed this brisk and satisfying conclusion to the Kronos Chronicles so much. Rutkoski weaves together the threads from her earlier books while still creating a rich narrative tapestry in this one. Astrophil the mechanical spider gets all of the best lines. Rutkoski's alternative Renaissance shares some of the preoccupations of our real one--with invention, the nation-state, empire, diplomacy (or the appearance of diplomacy!), and naval power--while maintaining a magical separate-ness that su...more

Rutkoski offers a satisfying conclusion to the Kronos Chronicles, and deftly ties up loose ends, while creating one last (exciting, dramatic, fast-paced) adventure in the alternate Renaissance timeline.

Petra Kronos, is determined to rescue her father, now turned into one of the monstrous Gray Men, but she will have to do it without Neel (who is dealing with issues of his own in Romany). Petra, Astrophil (a steampunk spider who still gets all the best lines), and Tomik embark on their quest. The...more

I don't read a ton of YA fiction (I mean, not since I was a YA), but I just adored this trio of novels, and actually tore through them all back to back. The covers remind me of the cover of a beloved collection of short stories by Joan Aiken, the characters and settings are like a Hayao Miyazaki movie, and I just had a ton of fun reading them. Petra, the heroine, is blunt and emotional, but very intelligent (this is nuts, but she reminded me of Captain Kirk) and her floppy passion is matched by...more

The final book of the Kronos Chronicles gets off to a slow start. The characters I'd fallen in love with are still in transition, sailing to the Vatra, the Romany homeland. Each of the characters will eventually grow into roles they could never have imagined, but in the meantime, there's a whole lot of waiting around and not speaking to each other. Nothing bugs me more than inarticulate characters (see my review of The Invention of Hugo Cabret).

The Jewel of the Kalderash eventually groww into th...more

It appears that this is the final volume in Marie Rutkoski's trilogy about Petra Kronos, which is quite a shame as the books have been some of my favorite recent YA fantasies. Set in a slightly alternate Elizabethan world, centered around Bohemia and the city of Prague, Petra Kronos in this book is on a quest to save her father, who's been turned into an evil creature through the alchemy of one of Prince (would-be Emperor) Rodolfo's court magicians. The adventures, as Petra and her friend Neel a...more

Rutkoski stayed strong for the entire series. I had put off reading this last book because I knew I would have to reread the first two so that I could remember the plot. I don't know why I put it off. I thoroughly enjoyed all three books and had a difficult time putting any of them down and finished them in just a few days. Some things were predictable and read just like similar YA books (I've said this before but I will keep saying it because it annoys me to no end--STOP with the heroine having...more

I was a bit nervous about this, as I always am about the conclusions of series I've enjoyed. What if they don't end well? What if someone I like dies? What if the right people don't end up together? It is very stressful. However, Marie Rutkoski is fabulous, and this is a great conclusion to a wonderful series. I liked Neel's bits especially--his tension between his personal desires and his responsibilities was great. (Dec 2011)

Well done book, yes it does still deal with the evil prince and the gray men. How do you stop an unstopable army that poisons with a touch and a prince who will stop at nothing to get more power. The friendship and sacrifices of the main characters really make this book for me. Again I think this series is for teen at the earliest because of the darker human issues it deals with with the power hungry prince.

I read this in four hours flat.
I reeeeeeeeeeeally want another sequel, though I know it won't be as good, probably because I love the characters so much.
It's 4.20 in the morning. I have no idea if this makes any sense.

This is the perfect conclusion to a perfect trilogy. As a whole, the trilogy is just great. I thought it had the perfect balance of adventure, intrigue, mystery, heroism, ingenuity, fantasy, even the right dash of romance, respecting the fact that the characters are 14 and 15 years old - i.e., there's some cute likings going on between people, but they're not acting like they're on the verge of a lifelong marriage, they act like the 14 and 15 year olds they are.

I am so glad I found these books a...more

Not enough John Dee!

Aside from one authorial quirk I don't remember from the other books (constantly referring to Petra's companion as "the friends" -- just felt awkward), I thought this was an exciting, dramatic, and even moving conclusion to the Kronos Chronicles. Sometimes it felt a little too fast-paced, being crammed as it was with several storylines which didn't always get as much development as they should, but the payoff to all those stories coming together was still wonderful. Petra and...more

I couldn't read this last installment of the Kronos Chronicles fast enough! This trilogy is, in my opinion, one of the best young adult series out there. I recommend it to anyone who enjoyed Harry Potter and needs to add some new magic and mystery in their fiction.

i love the story. it has a nice ending. but i think that the title has little to do with the story other than it may be referring to neel's heritage.
Amy
I really enjoyed this series. I wanted a little more from the ending but overall it was a wonderful series.
Shanna
I loved this series, but this last book seemed a bit more clunky than the first two.
Kimberly

This is still a great book just not nearly as good as the first two.
