Heartwarming story of 15-year-old Rob who slips out early on Christmas morning to milk the cows as a special gift for his father.

I was familiar with this story but was surprised to discover that it was written by Pearl S. Buck.

We read this as part of a FHE lesson on service and it led to some wonderful discussion—do you serve because you love or do you grow to love through serving, serving discreetly, Matt 25:35-40, etc.

I loved the parallel with the ba...more

This has always been one of my favorite Christmas stories, and a couple of years ago, my mom gave me this lovely hardcover version of it.

The story opens with a man remembering a long ago Christmas when money was scarce and he wanted to find the best possible gift for his father. Overhearing his father tell his mother how much he hates to waken his son each morning to do the milking, Rob realizes how much his father really does love him. He decides that the gift he will give his fa...more

The story of a boy, who a few days before Christmas, overhears his father telling his mother how much he loves his son, and how he wished things could be easier for him. The son realizes how much he is loved, and how much he loves his father in return, which makes him want to do something special for his father for Christmas.

He wakes up at 3am and does all the milking and chores, so his father won't have to. His father is truly touched, and then, as a bonus, gets to see his child...more

I found this book when I was looking for a Christmas gift for my brother-in-law's family. It sounded like a goodie, so I ordered an extra for my own family. I'm so glad I did. What a sweet, sweet story of strong, quiet love. I dare you not to get teary-eyed! If I was a betting woman, I'd bet a lot of money that The Church of Jesus-Christ of Latter-Day Saints did a short film or a comercial based on this story, but I can't seem to find anything. Anyway, this will be a Christmas tradition from now...more

I've heard this story before about a boy surprising his father by doing Christmas morning chores before his father awoke. This is a great story about love. The only problem with this book is that the illustrations are dark (most of the story takes place in the wee hours of the morning) and difficult to see.

I heard an incredibly moving telling of a story last Christmas morning on NPR. It was on a car trip, and everyone in the car (mom, Chris, me, and the kids) was completely silenced by it. I just learned that this Pearl Buck story exists, adn I have a feeling the NPR piece was an exerpt. Ihope.

Our family was given this book for a Christmas gift. I have read and heard the story many times, and I will always love it. The book helps you feel the true spirit of Christmas. The illustrations are done by Mark Buenheur who graduated from Utah State University. Go Aggies!

I have given this short story by Pearl S. Buck for years on my Christmas programs of readings I do for women's groups, Relief Societies, book groups, church groups, etc. It is a favorite, not only of mine, but my family as well, and we often share it during the holidays.

Beautiful illustrations-- we read it by the fireplace with hot cocoa. Caleb got more cocoa on our 'picnic blanket' than in his mouth, and the dark illustrations were hard to see by the light of the tree, but it was a wonderful story about a priceless gift of love.

Beloved author Pearl S. Buck's heartwarming classic was first published in 1955. I was delighted to find the story available as an illustrated book a few short years ago. Illustrator Mark Buehner beautifully captures the early morning feeling of life on a farm.

Love this story - very touching. Family on a farm. The boy hates getting up early every morning to milk the cows, etc. On Christmas morning he surprises his Dad and wakes up really early and does all the work. It was the first time his Dad ever saw the kids open presents on Christmas.

A beautiful book! It's beautiful not only in pictures, but the story itself is beautiful, too.
It's also a great tale of love. One that will bring you into the spirit of Christmas regardless of whether it's the holiday season or not.

The story line is wonderful. A son gives of himself for his father's Christmas gift. Sets a good example to children.
I just did not like the dark illustrations. My grandson didn't either. He didn't want to read it!

This is a children's book. It is a beautiful book in word and in picture. It shares a grown man's memory of living on a farm and the best Christmas gift that he ever gave his father. A "must have"!

I have loved hearing this story at Christmas for over 20 years and was thrilled to get the illustrated book last year. This is a wonderful story to share about the true spirit of giving and love.
Melanie
My love language is "Acts of Service", so this classic Christmas story resonates with me. Mark Buehner's warm illustrations bring to life the sweet story of a son's gift of service to his father.

This a beautiful story that I'm sure I've heard at ever Christmas devotional for the past ten years. I didn't realize (until just the other day) that Pearl S. Buck wrote it. Hunh.

I have been familiar with this story since I was a child but had no idea that Pearl S. Buck had written it. It is a beautiful story of love and service--one that is definitely a classic.

This is a lovely story! I wasn't able to look at the illustrations much when I read it, but I'm sure they complemented the story. I need to read more Pearl S. Buck!

Yes, Pearl S. Buck!

This book is a lesson.

I actually liked the Forward by the illustrator Mark Buehner better than I liked the story itself.

Sweet and meaningful without being sappy. I'll admit, I get a little choked up when I read this one.
