Linklater, Eric. THE DARK OF SUMMER. (1957). ****. Eric Linklater (1899-1974) was born in Wales and educated in Aberdeen. His family came from the Orkney Islands and he spent much of his childhood there. He served as a private in the Black Watch at the close of the First World War and suffered a nearly fatal head injury. His life after that was composed of teaching and traveling and writing. He was awarded a fellowship that allowed him to travel in America from 1928 to 1930. His early novels ...more

I was led to this book by a column in the Wall Street Journal recommending five notable books on treason and betrayal. I'd read or knew about the others (which included A Perfect Spy), but this one was new to me. With its post-WWII musings on war, duty, country, family, life, death, it had an old-fashioned earnestness that such questions matter. This book had a different feel and flow to it -- there were things I really liked about that and things I'm not sure about. I do realize that the pieces left hanging were intentional -- as the author says in the first few pages, there is enough light "in which can be seen beauty enough for happiness. Not enough, more ...more

Quisling Calling

This is a novel from a different era and conventions change, for instance, away from scene-setting and character elaboration. Even so, I still think that “The Dark of Summer” is a misconceived novel, with the result that some accomplished writing – for instance, a description of travelling by train in wartime -- is largely wasted. I’d even go so far as to suggest that “Quisling Calling” would be a better title for a novel that retained and concentrated upon the intriguing spy sto

The writing was ok, but I just couldn't get into this book. I'm almost halfway through and none of the characters are doing much for me. I'm putting it down now.
