Informative look at the upbringing of Hip Hop and the demoralization of the current "Mainstream" rap scene. The book hints at a lot of important albums, books and films as evidence of the evolution (or devolution) of Hip Hop. Good read, although it does come off a little biased towards woman, since it was written by a woman, but I do see all the points she makes. It seems as though she writes a bit more passionately when referring to the womanizing and demoralizing of woman in Hip Hop throughout...more

Before reading this book, I had little to no knowledge about the socially-conscious beginnings of Hip Hop music and how it affected and reflected on the African American experience.

With useful recommendations on music, movies, and literature, this quick-read is another stepping-stone to understanding and acheiving racial equality.
