The past is never far. . . .

I will most likely not be reading this book, though I love the story.

Why?

Because it was not written by L.J. Smith. I don't think a lot of people realize what this means -- after all, if the writing's good, why not like the story?

As a writer myself, I would be horrified -- as in Saw victims horrified -- if I was fired from my own books. Not only that, but if someone else wrote my characters in my place. It would infuriate me beyond belief.

All this said, I will not be reading this. I am very disap...more

Ok seriously? Why the hell is everyone hating on this series?????? It's amazing! Some of you need to stop and ask yourself, 'If I hate this series, and think that it died 3 books ago, then why am I looking up the next book and taking time out of my life to write a book review for it?' Look, Some of us like this book, so shut the hell up if your going to hate because it's innapropriate and rude.
Thanks, and reply, if you agree. :)

Not even a ghost writer can fix the damage Smith did to the series with the Return books. Can't someone just let these poor characters rest in peace already, or at least give them different names and call that a non-Vampire Diaries new series? It's not like any of them resemble who they were in the original Vampire Diaries books.

And when will these ugly covers with the dark red backgrounds stop showing up?! Somewhat-pale/pale model + dark red background = model who looks the bad kind of pale and...more

Not even gonna read it if LJ isn't gonna write it. Not gonna let myself buy it. Whoever decided Elena HAD TO end up with Stefan and was okay with firing LJ from writing the books better be pretty frickin' happy with themselves, because that was a crappy move.

After reading:

I want to like this. Every single book I want to like it, but the thing is, I despise Elena. And I can't support Damon or Stephan, because she flat out says "I love both of you" and they're just like oh ok whatever.
I'm sorry, but that's not ok. If I were in that situation I'd be like pick one of us, stop leading the other on, and if you can't then we'll both move on.

Let's get this straight--I WILL NEVER READ THIS BOOK. NO FORCE ON THE ENTIRE PLANET CAN GET ME TO TOUCH THIS BOOK WITH A 10 METER STICK.

WHY?

BECAUSE MY FAVORITE AUTHOR L. J SMITH DID NOT WRITE THIS BOOK.

Whoever the low-life GHOSTWRITER is who wrote this should be ashamed of themselves. You will never ever live up to L.J Smith's expertise. It's sad to know your only reason for writing is to get money, and that because of you the rightful author of this book can no longer continue with this seri...more

I'm not going to ever read this series again if a ghostwriter is gonna write it. I am curious what will happen next after Midnight and the welfare of Damon too but it would be really disrespecting to all the characters (Elena, Damon, Stefan, ....) if I continue reading. And for the reason L.J got fired, I personally hate it, but on the bigger picture, the quality of her Return trilogy was crappy and cheesy. I'm really happy to see Damon was still alive, but it was like they all died when the gho...more

So I almost didn't read this book because of the rumors surrounding the author & book-series-rights. She was supposedly not going to be the author of the new 'TVD: The Hunters' book series. I had already read both the original and 'The Return' series' and loved them. I was very upset by the news that LJ Smith might not be the sole author of the new series even though the books & characters were hers and not another author's to continue.

Then, the book release news kept showing LJ Smith as...more

Angry. No, scratch that... FURIOUS. This is one of the only books that I thought the *second character (Damon) will win the girl (Elena)'s heart and she will ditch the first male character (Stefan) That she fell in love with first and the reader (me) will be extremely happy*. But nooooo. LJ Smith was going to grant my wish but then the *stupid, idiotic, MEAN, insert creative foul language here* publishers decided no. We are going to fire LJ Smith (what the hell?) and Stelena forever! :( Not happ...more

I found this book to be more forced than the others. It seemed very typical that something would happen. And this time things seemed to end within a week. Or that's the time span it seemed to me. Everything felt just pushed through. That and nobody even seemed to second guess the thoughts and feelings they had. They just accepted them or then ignored them.

Spoiler:
And then Damon reappearing seemed to easy. We got him crawling out of the hole, walking towards the gate, being saved by Sage, and the...more

Okay I must say I am highly disappointed with this story. I didn't know if the rumors were true or not about L.J. Smith being fired, but just by reading a few of the pages you could tell it was not her writing. I was looking forward to continuing this series, but I think I'm stopping now. If L.J. Smith isn't writing it then I'm not reading it anymore. It was her series she should be allowed to do what she wants with her material. I hope she'll be able to finish her Night World series though. This book is a very good book, I must say. I was skeptical about reading it because there were rumors that L.J. Smith the author of the book was no longer going to write the future books. But I couldn't resist the urge to buy the book.
In the last book, it ended off with Damon dying for another character, Elena losing her powers, and the gaurdians restorin the town of Fell's Church after being attacked by an evil power. Now in the Phantom, Elena and her friends are back at Fell's Church and ev...more

Phantom is the first book in the Hunters trilogy as well as eighth book in The Vampire Diaries. It's also the first book to be written by a Ghostwriter. And I was sad about it. It was very sad that Alloy Entertainment took the series away from L.J. Smith, along with The Secret Circle. Why did they have to be such imbeciles? Why couldn't they have let her write it the way she wanted it? Well, they have already done it, and you can never change that, especially when they have already been publishe...more

I love L.J, I love the series, books and show. I don't like the whole Damon/Elena relationship it was built on a lies and deceit so why would I like it, but firing the author because of it is too far. I was prepared to endure my disgust of Delena for the sake of the other characters whom I love.
That being said I just can't leave it the way it was and be okay with that, I will be reading this, and I will be loving every second of it.
Side notes: I hope Elena dies, I'm tired of that slut. lol. Damo...more

When I heard that this book was coming out, I think I died a little inside. I LOVED the first four, got a little bored with The Return trilogy, refused to read the Stefan/Damon spin off stories and have never watched the TV series. And never will. (Hello, they axed Meredith)

I'll keep this short. Vampire Diaries ended with book 7. End of. Elena with no powers + Damon dead = SERIES OVER. And this isn't even written by LJ. Yes, I will be reading this, but only to justify the one star it's going to...more

I know that this was supposedly written by a ghost writer, but seriously whoever wrote this could have done better. I don't know why I keep trudging on with this series, it just keeps getting more mediocre and drama-bombed, and for cereals they never stop describing the characters, like seriously every single book they re-descibe they characters, but they keep describing them the same way and they're pictures are on the cover! It is so infuriating. The plot line is also a repeating factor, secre...more

TRUE FANS OF L.J. SMITH'S AMAZING TALENT SHOULD UNIT TO BOYCOTT THE TRAGEDY OF HER BEING FIRED FROM WRITING HER OWN BOOKS AND USING HER NAME AND STYLE OF WRITING IN THE FUTURE BOOKS TO PROMOTE IT.

Though this book is marked as read, I have not read it and do not plan to- I will only read the books that L.J. Smith actually wrote. I have not read any of "The Vampire Diaries" book, but am a big fan of the show (which i probably should not be since one of the companies that creates the show helped fi...more

The Vampire Diaries are a series of novels (1-10) written by L.J.Smith. Can I first point out that the TV show is BASED on the novels, not the other way around. I picked up the first and second book in early December 2011 and was hooked by the end of it. I loved the plot, the characters and even the damn setting was amazing and made the novel much more effective. I was literally screaming at the end of the second novel.

With that being said, I bought the third, fourth and fifth books a couple of...more

This book was written by someone possessing a basic familiarity with the original quartet and who has also been very influenced by the tv show. Small details like the quince tree at Elena's house coexist with tv!memories of Elena dumping Matt *before* she meets Stefan. Stefan now wears a sapphire ring, and I don't think either lapis lazuli or vervain were mentioned once. Meredith gets a third last name in this one, so you can take your pick: Meredith Sulez, level-headed, elegantly eyebrowed sarc...more

Mystery solved, a bunch of 10-year-olds got together and randomly complied their fan fiction. Who are these ghost writers?

I haven't read any of the previous books. I too hastily selected it off the library shelf because I am a fan of "The Vampire Diaries" on CW. I was disappointed when I realized it was not book one by L.J. Smith or even written by her. That disappointment was trivial compared to the treatment of the characters I have become attached to through the show.

How many times has this...more

I was intrigued by this book, though it was obvious Smith wasn't the author. I found so many similarities with the tv show, it felt to me that the authors were doing their best to twist the story and characters Smith originally created to suit the show they created from the premise. In a way I liked this because I'm such a huge fan of the show, but the characters and stories have been so different all along that this threw me a little and I found it confusing to relate to the characters as they...more

This new trilogy begins with the nightmares, trials and tribulations from the last trilogy far behind them. The entire cast of characters seem to be given a whole brand new lease on life. Sadly, there's the possibility of the demise of one of their close friends, but that's where the plot thickens. So not everything is quite perfect at Fell's Church, Virginia. But in the beginning there's hope that normalcy will return to their lives. But I reached that conclusion prematurely because a new cycle...more

Previously in The Return Vol 3: Midnight, Damon was staked by the monstrous tree while he’s trying to save his little redbird Bonnie from plummeting to her death. In her rage, Elena used her “Wings of Destruction” to destroy the tree and Inari’s Star Ball (mystical power source that can open the portal and more), and was about to unleash massive destruction in the Celestial Court when the three Guardians finally clipped her wings for good…

In this new novel, Fell’s Church was back to normal. Vick...more
