The synopsis is misleading. Krystal doesn’t run away from home, she’s kidnapped. She does think about running away to get out of marriage to a man she doesn’t want, but she’s abducted before she can even formulate a firm plan. Her brother, Andrew arranges a marriage between herself and Curtis Belvey, an unappealing man who can’t think for himself due to his controlling mother. She refuses to marry him. While Krystal is in the forest one day, a group of soldiers come upon her, and transport her t...more

So I am not entirely sure why this books seems to bring in not so high ratings, i didn't look at any reviews when i went into this book like i normally do, and i am bad person who does judge a book, by a)its cover (sometimes), b) the summary c) and this might be the worst, but the ratings that it gets on Goodreads. Then if i am still sort of interested i will try to look at someone's review on like a two or three starred, and then i will look at the opposite end as well as a 4 or 5, and if you a...more

I really liked the story line---it was captivating and kept me engaged through the whole book. However, the writing style was very basic and plain---definitely not anything like a Shannon Hale novel, whose words and descriptions were rich with color, flavor and wit. Some of the Peasant Queen's scenes were too simplistic and easily solved, while others went on and on with monotony (I got really bored of the evil King Gregory and his advances and Krystal's reactions---yes, we know already, that Ki...more

"The Peasant Queen" by Cheri Chesley could have been a big disappointment in my list of current reads. Fantasy is not my favorite genre, and I approached this novel with a good deal of hesitation.
But Chesley's quick pace and great development of characters pulled me in from the get-go. This fun novel has a "Graceling" feel, but requires less time commitment from start to finish. It is a clean read and one I recommend to young adult and adult readers--whether you love fantasy or not.
The novel is...more

If this genre is fantasy writing, this text is fantastical. For the reader, the book completely demands a suspension of belief. There are unexplained touches of magic rings, swords, crystals, a winged horse, and an ubiquitous black mastiff. The plot is pedestrian and predictable. The setting presumes to be a sort of 15th Century kingdom with enumerable details that challenge everything I know about that historical period’s culture, mores, and hierarchy. Characters are pretty one dimensional: a m...more

Krystal has been kidnapped! Not only is she taken from her home to a strange land, but these men use magic, something Krystal has never believed in. When they take her to the terrifying king of a strange land, he tells her of his plans to use her to show his nephew, Prince Jareth, the rightful heir to the throne, that King Gregory is all powerful. But when Gregory falls hard for Krystal and announces his intention to marry her, Krystal knows she has to escape this man, rescue the prince from his...more

Krystal is a simple farmer’s daughter with a simple problem. Her brother had promised her in marriage to the town oaf. Krystal wants more than anything to escape this marriage, but that’s before she’s kidnapped and whisked away to another kingdom by a tyrant king, Grogory, who also wants her hand in marriage. He also wants to kill his nephew, Jareth, the kingdom’s rightful ruler.

Krystal also live in a world with magic and mystical beast. These elements are understated and don’t dominate the stor...more

I hated this book. I come off reading Inheritance, the last book of the Inheritance Saga, a very well written plot driven story I might add, having high expectations for this book. And it was taken off the pedestal immeadiately.

For one, the main character has no sense of how to act or to behave. Oh I'm going to run away. Lets tell the Evil king this so he can catch me. The chapters are so short for one, little to know detail. The dog is a mystery, barely got to see her relationship with it, and h...more

An adorable story featuring a strong, determined peasant girl, a dashing, honorable, imprisoned prince, a ruthless, murderous, lustful king, and some amazingly brave maids. Krystal is not one to roll over and do as the men in her life command of her. She is feisty, brave and resourceful. I love the way she sees what needs to be done and simply does it! Great debut novel. Such a fantastic book deserves a much better cover. My only complaints story wise were an ending that wrapped up a little too...more

Like most everything published by Bonneville/Cedarfort here is yet another author whose writing style reminds me of my own first awkward scribblings, yeah, when I was like FIFTEEN! Silly dialogue, no story outline, Cheri seems to be making everything up as she goes along. Cute story? check. No r-rated language or sex? check. I wonder how many rejections it got before she sent it to the only publishing house in the state of Utah with no scruples?
Oh well it's a first novel. With a little polishin...more

The plot of “The Peasant Queen” is incredibly reminiscent of “The Princess Bride.” The kingdom is just as fantastical, the men just as handsome, and the sword fighting just as predominant. “The Peasant Queen” features both a strong heroine and a fantastic villain—both well-developed, intense characters, and the pacing is great which makes it a quick read. Unfortunately because the novel is so character-driven, the epic action-adventure part, the sword fighting and magic, is left feeling shallow....more

I won this book from a blog sometime ago. This is a review from my ten-year-old daughter, Mia, who finished it within 24 hours:

I really loved this book. I like how it was plotted. The author made it really easy to connect to the characters. I rooted for the main character, Krystal, throughout the book.

The book is about a girl, Krystal, who is a peasant captured by a king to anger his nephew, who is the rightful heir to the throne. He forces to her to marry him and she rebels. Throughout the boo...more

Grabbed this off the new book shelf at the library because it looked like a fun short read. It's a first novel and the immature writing showed. The magic seemed shallow and "convenient" and the pegasus a bit trite. I do love Krystal being a strong character, though everything came too easily for her. It bugged that the handsome prince didn't make an appearance until almost half way through the book. Oh, and I didn't like feeling sympahty for the evil king. I like my villains straight forward not...more

This was a nice young adult fantasy book. I really enjoyed the strong heroine of Krystal. At the beginning of the book, her brother betrothes her to a very unsuitable man. She plans to take matters into her own hands and escape the betrothement. Instead, she ends up being kidnapped and taken to another kingdom where the evil king plans on making her his bride. Throughout the story whenever challenges come up, she is always planning on how to make them work to her benefit. She doesn't wait to be...more

The Peasant Queen is an interesting story that is well written and full of engaging characters.

I personally was disappointed with the end of the story (I don’t want to give away too much.) The beginning of the story feels like it could be like ‘Beauty and the Beast’ (my favorite fairy tale). So I was in that frame of mind as I read. About half way through the book I figured out that it was more of a ‘Robin Hood’ type love story (think Maid Marian, Robin Hood, and Sir Guy o...more

This was a very well written book. I enjoyed all of the characters and cannot wait for the second book to come out. The story begins with a farm girl named Krystal. It focuses on her life and the different events surrounding her marriage to a man she does not want to marry. Luckily she is taken to a place that opens her world up for love, and adventure.

All of the elements we love about fantasy are involved in this story; magic, bravery, courage, mystery, intrigue, and most of all--character dev...more

I really liked the plot of this story. I enjoyed the characters, and their depth! I do wish that the magic was more to the forefront of the story, and that some of the things in the book were better explained but I still really enjoyed this story! As much as I wished that things were developed a little more I still enjoyed the book and finished it!

Krystal's brother betroths her to a man she can't stand. She decides to run away but is kidnapped instead. She is teleported to another kingdom, where evil King Gregory awaits. He is trying to oust the rightful crown Prince (his nephew) and has Prince Jareth locked up.

There is some fantasy/magic, some sweet romance, some adventure, and some mystery. A little bit of everything. I did enjoy it, but would liked to have seen a few of the details expounded on a bit more.

What did I think? These are the times I'm really conflicted about what to say. I read the book clear through (so it has to be at least two stars). I could tell the author had worked really hard to create the story so I hate to say anything negative. So all I will say is that it wasn't a five-star book for me. Sorry about that.

This was a sweet little story about a peasant girl who is kidnapped by a king in order to make her his bride. It has elements of magic as we find that he has been watching her in a type of crystal ball. She finds out that the king's nephew, who is the rightful king, is imprisoned and she saves him. I really liked the storyline - I thought it was original and imaginative. Oddly, the character I was most enthralled by was the evil king. He totally fascinated me. He wasn't totally 100% evil, he had...more

I met Cheri at Costco on one of those days where I just couldn't pass up looking into a book signing that was right in front of my face. We talked a bit about writing and I, being who I am, of course bought the book. Haha I liked it fairly well and hope there are more to come. :)

The Peasant Queen is a light, easy, sweet read. The story contains a good mix of adventure and romance with a strong heroine and a little magic. This is a book I really enjoyed and can easily recommend to readers of all ages, especially those who enjoy fairy tales. I was summarizing the book to my husband who commented it sound a lot like a Disney movie. Also reminded me a little of The Princess Bride.

A fun quick read, I liked the imaginative way that the escape from the castle occurred. Although I wish that there had been a little more character development upon the character of the prince. The end was very satisfying and I would recommend this book to others.

An all-around good and very basic fairy-tale story. It feels as though small pieces were taken from every other fairy tale story and made a new original story that feels like a classic. I'm interested in hearing about the sequel.

I loved this book! Very easy read. Great story no dragging. Remembered the characters. A great fairy tale best one I've read in awhile. The other book by this author is only available on kindle...grrrrrr!

Very well written. Engaging. I found Krystal to be a strong, believable character and enjoyed stepping into her world. King Gregory is a great villain. I hated him and that’s a good thing. A+

Currently blissful working mother of 5. Married to a fantastic, amazing, supportive man. I love to read, I love to write and I love taking pictures (though my skill is debatable lol).
