I originally bought this book for holiday guests as a treat to read while visiting, but I had never it. I took it with me to my parents home to read Christmas week. While is wasn't one of her best, I will say it was a perfect book for a quick holiday read. I finished it easily in the week that I was there (stretching the last few pages out to last me the whole week). It wasn't too intense for reading during the joyous holidays. And it wasn't such a page-turner that I didn't want to put it down -...more

Well, I've managed to avoid Higgins Clark, but I couldn't escape her any longer. I grabbed it off the shelf in the cafe in a fit of desperation over something new to read.

Verdict:

She's an engaging storyteller, who can get you involved in the stories and sympathetic to the characters. I can see her telling stories to a crowded room of appreciative listeners.

HOWEVER, does she need to start each new chapter with the full name of the character whose point of view she's shifting me to? It's simply aw...more

Not the full book as I listened to the abridged version on cassette no less! But, I enjoy anything Mary Higgins Clark writes. I guess it is just familiar like a comfortable sweatshirt. :) Anyway, as per the review... When her husband is diagnosed with leukemia, Catherine Dornan and their two young sons accompany him to New York, during the Christmas season, for a life-saving operation. Hoping to divert them from worry about their father, Catherine takes the boys to see some of the city's Christm...more

**WARNING: Some spoilers**

Mary Higgins Clark sure had me on my toes with this one!! She is a talented storyteller. There was a lot of action in this short novel that it's hard to believe all of that action was less that 160 pages!

This novel had the perfect amount of suspense and Christmas atmosphere to be one of my favorite novels. It was a heart filled story about the Magic of Christmas and love.

I did sympathize with Cally. I think she did the right thing by not covering up for her brother Jim...more

A quick and interesting mystery from Mary Higgins Clark that for once does not have an overabundance of characters. The story is captivating, with a sweet Christmasy ending.

Catherine Dorman's husband is in the hospital in New York City when she and her two young sons stop on the street to listen to Christmas carols being sung. Seven-year old Brian notices a woman taking his mother's dropped wallet, containing a St. Christopher medal which saved their grandfather from taking a bullet in World War...more

I guess a book is what you make of it, more really that it meets or surpasses or fails the expectations you place on it. If you expect something amazing from it and it fails you are disappointed and feel let down (even betrayed), however if you expect nothing and it surpasses everything you hoped or dreamed off you are surprised and pleased with this unexpected discovery.
Ok where is this all going (it is Sunday morning and I have not had many teas) basically this a filler, an interlude, pallet...more

I picked this book up as part of a group of travel tapes. It should have been easy listening, but I found myself skimming through parts of it (book on tape) as it felt like the mother was a whiner and a hopeless type of person, although she started out seeming somewhat strong.

I really dislike characters that dither - should I do this? Should I do that? Oh what will people think? And this book had a lot of those, from Cally to Catherine.

I liked the persistence of Brian as he went after his moth...more

Always a fan of MHC and have enjoyed everything I've read by her.

I like to read stories of the season around Christmas time and found this
book in a thrift store. While there is some mystery, suspense and thrill
associated with the story, it still ends up being a nice warm Christmas
story of faith, family and hope.

Mrs. Dorman is in NYC while her husband is having surgery. Trying to
divert her sons from their father's illness she takes them on a NY visit
of holiday sights. While listening to a stre...more

Chilling and suspenseful, Silent Night by Mary Higgins Clark, is a 'happy ending' Christmas story. When Brian Dornan disappears from his mother's side on a cold New York Christmas Eve night, her world just about collapses. Her husband, Dr. Tom Dornan, recently diagnosed with leukemia, had life-saving surgery just hours before. She took her two young sons to view the Christmas sights and sounds of New York, in an effort to relieve them all of their stress. In the blink of an eye, Brian is gone. W...more

Silent Night is second book of Mary Higging Clark I have read so far. I started liking her works after I read Moonlight becomes you last December. Contrary to my first book of her, Silent Night was intended to be a Christmas gift from the author to her readers. The story has a suspense element (which did not surprise me at all) woven around a Christmas theme in New York. If you haven't read this book yet, wait until next Christmas to make your read interesting.

My step dad randomly gave me this book and told me to read it. I had never read a Mary Higgins Clark book before but I really enjoyed it. It had a lot of suspense and I liked how the whole book took place in one night. I'm assuming most of Mary Higgins Clark's books are like this so I would like to read some more and I would recommend this to anyone who likes suspense. Great choice for my first Mary Higgins Clark book.

Spoiler alert.

Seven-year-old Brian follows the woman who picked up his mother's wallet, only to find himself the victim of a kidnapping. The St. Christopher medal he retrieves from the wallet gives him hope for his father's healing from leukemia and courage for his own safe escape. A police officer plays a key role in securing the capture of the escaped prisoner through his sensitivity and grace toward a suspect.

Again from the shelves of my mother comes a small book for The Holidays. It is set in New York City and begins at the store windows across from Rockefeller Center. This is one of my favorite places to be during the Christmas season. So, I was drawn in to the story immediately.

This could easily be a Lifetime movie with all the elements of love, villians, heroes and utltimately a happy ending.

At first, I didn't think I was going to like it. Then all of sudden I was hooked! I couldn't put it down. I had to find out what would happen to Brian. Would he get away from Jimmy? Would he be able to give his dad the St. Christopher medal? Would Jimmy hurt Brian? Would they hold Jimmy's sister responsible for Brian's kidnapping? I had to know! And like the song goes.....All is Well! All is Bright!

This is a cute departure from the normal Clark woman-in-distress-with-two-male-leads formula (not that I don't have a soft spot for that, but...). Since it's the Christmas season now, I was delighted to find this hiding in the back of my bookshelf; took me an afternoon to read it, and the characters were lively enough to be worth following. I did have to put it down at one point and was still thinking of it, which is always a good sign for books, and I might even hang on to this one. It's enough...more

I loved this book. It was a quick read with a little mystery mixed with a little drama all set at Christmas time. I have always been a Mary Higgins Clark fan but haven't read a book by her in a long time. Picked up this gem at the library sale and I'm so glad I did. Good story.

Mesmerizing and filled with suspense! Believing that a St. Christopher medal will save his dad, young Brian disappears from his mom's side one afternoon as he tries to catch the woman who took his mom's wallet from the sidewalk. The medal is in the wallet and he has to get it back!

I thought I'd try a Mary Higgins Clark book and picked out this short holiday book. I really enjoyed it and it was a quick read at only 154 pages. I've already picked out another one of her Christmas books to read - probably over Thanksgiving break.
Erika
It was fun to read a holiday book...but it was awfully predictable. Also, tough to read about a seven year old boy lost and then kidnapped in NYC. Now, I never want to take the kids to New York! Quick, easy read, book #50 for the year!!

When Catherine Dornan's husband, Tom, is diagnosed with leukemia, she and their two young sons travel with him to New York during the holiday season for a lifesaving operation. On Christmas Eve, hoping to lift the boys' spirits, Catherine takes them to see Rockefeller Center's famous Christmas tree; while there, seven-year-old Brian notices a woman taking his mother's wallet. A St. Christopher medal tucked inside the wallet saved his grandfather's life in World War II, and Brian believes with al...more

I used to love her books, but they all seem the same. It took me years to finish this book, slow start, but I love a happy ending.

This book was a super quick read and although it wasn't horrible it was just really predictable and lacked real substance.

This will tug at your heartstrings. A great story for the holidays, or really any time of the year.

I chose Silent Night from the library because I've seen Mary Higgins Clark books all over the place--the market, the drugstore, bookstores. Anyway I chose this because it's Easter and I thought a holiday book would be fun. Reading this book is like watching a Bruce Willis action flick. Really not much substance but it's fun to read for the short time it takes to get through it. For some reason I had expected a mystery--this was a thriller. But fun just the same. The author makes no pretension of...more

It's an intense story about events happening in a course of several hours on Christmas Eve. The pace is quick, the emotions are intense. The characters are lovable. It's a story about the Good versus the Bad, where the good people work together in a race with a bad person to save lives.

The story is quite gripping, thrilling, and ends with a heartwarming conclusion. I smiled and dropped tears reading this. It can be a quick read with its fast pace and light size.

I've brought this book out every Christmas for years and finally it got its chance to be read. I used to love a good tear jerker set at Christmas but the last few years I've been turned off by most of them. The stories all seem a little too cookie cutter. So I was looking for something that was different. This story really isn't any different and it did make me cry but it did touch me and gave me the feeling of generosity and good over evil. I do enjoy MHC crime/mysteries and this book will stay...more
