This is the first classic detective story that I have ever read. Two factors influenced my decision to read this short story: 1. The title grabbed my attention and intrigued me! 2. I thought it was time to read a classic detective story, and I immediately decided to try Sherlock Holmes.

I was certainly not disappointed. I had no idea what to expect, but to be honest, the idea of two human ears being delivered in the cardboard box was not one of them!
I found it most interesting in the way Holmes a...more

A Sherlock Holmes mystery with an edge. Two gruesome ears are sent in a cardboard box to an elderly woman. The police are called and Lestrade calls in Sherlock Holmes with Watson tagging along. The story was in my opinion easily predictable, although there were a few surprises along the way. The one thing I am always amused at in the older generation books is how easily the murderer confesses. Does this really happen??? As for the story, well Holmes deduces that two people have been murdered, th...more

Recommends it for: Mystery fans
I must admit that I have never really gotten into the Sherlock Holmes series, but we've had many introductions to these tales in other stories we've read and I really want to read these classic tales.

I discovered a bunch of audiobooks available on a recent British Airways flight to London. This story was one of them and I enjoyed listening to this story as I ate my meal (I love that they still serve food on overseas flights!) It was a short tale and very entertaining. I will certainly have to c...more

Take a small cardboard box, discover two ears inside it, throw in the fact that one is female and the other is male and you have a simple puzzle to solve. if you are Sherlock Holmes that is.

A beautifully told short story by that master of the pen, Arthur Conan Doyle.

I put this on my to-read list because I thought it was an unread full-length A. Conan Doyle novel. I soon saw that a.) it was a short and b.) I'd read it before. Still good, though.

This has been perhaps the most delightful short story yet in the series. I had started to think that it was to fall victim to the criticism that we didn't have the threads in our hands to solve the mystery, but it turned out instead to be subtle enough that I had just missed most of it. There are also some dramatic moments written amazingly well. A wonderful little story.

Sir Doyle writes a bitter tale of a woman spurned whose retaliatory actions to punish one result in the death of three. Her poisonous tongue and manipulative mind were the actual murder weapons, but another person would hang for her crimes.

It's a good reminder to maintain distance from people who eagerly tear down others as a regular part of their speech.

Short, but good. I love the personality developing in Holmes - and the reverse deduction is absolutely engaging in every way.

I love Sherlock Holmes and this is one I hadn't read before. It wasn't quite as... surprising or tension-filled as some of the others and yet I think it had some interesting sort of philosophical questions it put forward and briefly discussed. Holmes is always a student of human nature, but this case really represents that well.

I wanted to get a flavor of Conan Doyle's writing and decided to read one of his shorter stories. I picked this one because the title caught my attention (Pay attention, writers). Itt was probably not the best illustration of his work, but I do now want to read some more of his stuff when I get time. Maybe when I retire.

My favorite things about this story:

1. Sherlock Holmes declares himself an expert in human ears and can identify blood relations based on the shape of their ears

2. a piece of evidence given against the murder is that he is from Northern Ireland. A truly damning piece of evidence!

Another quick read from Doyle himself. The Adventure of the Cardboard Box presented a very gruesome tale but not suspense or much drama. The climax unfolded all at once and the ending seemed rushed. A nice quick read but there are better stories in the Holmes canon.

Another short story I felt like reading to see how I could handle ebooks on my iPad lol. This was a typical Sherlock Holmes mystery, but I must admit that I prefer the longer novel length ones where more happens to make it suspenseful and intriguing.

Realmente, não estou gostando das histórias de Sherlock Holmes.
Tenho outros contos, e me pergunto se devo continuar lendo de qualquer forma.

A quick short story. It wasn't a great or difficult case for Sherlock Holmes, as he himself states in the story.

My first Sherlock Holmes...a short little mystery for Watson to show off Sherlock's dispassionate logic. Fun!

Not one of his better books but a good quick read all of the same.

Arthur Conan Doyle was born the third of ten siblings on 22 May 1859 in Edinburgh, Scotland. His father, Charles Altamont Doyle, was born in England of Irish descent, and his mother, born Mary Foley, was Irish. They were married in 1855.

Although he is now referred to as "Conan Doyle", the origin of this compound surname (if that is how he meant it to be understood) is uncertain. His baptism record...more

“What is the meaning of it, Watson? said Holmes solemnly as he laid down the paper. "What object is served by this circle of misery and violence and fear? It must tend to some end, or else our universe is ruled by chance, which is unthinkable. But what end? There is the great standing perennial problem to which human reason is as far from an answer as ever.” 11 likes
“I should prefer that you do not mention my name at all in connection with this case, as I choose to be only associated with those crimes which present some difficulty in their solution.” 7 likes
