This might be favorite volume yet (I think I started with too many stars! There's nowhere to go!) It's been a few books since the boys really used their alchemy interesting ways, but here there are a lot of cool uses of powers. And there is my new hero, Winry Rockbell, deciding that if she can be an awesome cybernetics mechanic, she can for damn sure deliver a baby if circumstances require. Also, this volume gets into the boys' personal history and introduces their mentor/substitute mom. I love...more
Right after putting down vol. 4 I picked up vol. 5 and it's great, as usual! I also read this one in one day :)
This volume has a wonderful blend of humor in the beginning, when a pick-pocket steal's Ed's alchemist watch while they are at Rush Valley, and then they help deliver a baby!!! That part was really funny!!! And it's also serious because it explains what life and what a miracle it is....That's why I like FMA soooooo much! It has a great mix of everything!!! Towards the end of this volume...more

Ed, Al and Winry go to Rush Valley which is the Auto-Mail mecca. Being an auto-mail mechanic, it is Winry's idea of heaven and Volume 5 is where Winry gets some spotlight.
As she is one of my very favorite FMA characters, I have no complaints in seeing Winry take over and get some face time. One of the keys to Arakawa's success in FMA is her great female characters and the way she lets them have individuality and strength.

This volume's character gushing is devoted to Winry Rockbell.
Oh, Winry. Girl-next-door, wench with a wrench, childhood friend to the Elric brothers, and blushing love interest for Edward...if only either of them would admit to it. A dedicated automail mechanic, in the tradition of her grandmother, Pinako, and inclined to minor medical treatment in homage to her doctor parents.
Having had her own share of tragedies, she remains positive and cheerful, caring and sensitive, and quick with a wrench t...more

Not really one of my favorite books in the series so far. This volume seemed like a lot of filler and flashback to me. However, the artwork was extremely detailed and enchanting, and there was plenty of comedy and drama. I was thoroughly entertained, even though I felt like the overall story barely advanced. Even though it's clear from the cliffhanger in this volume that the next will start with a flashback as well, I'm eager to get to it, get through the back story, and find out more about what...more
Fullmetal Alchemist Volume 5 by Hiromu Arakawa continues to build Winry's character and expand upon her story and history with the Elric brothers. Ed and Al unaware of what's happened to Hughs are on their way to the south to consult with their alchemy teacher. Winry tags along to see Rush Valley, the nation's capitol for automail.
I suppose I'm being too flippant with describing Winry. She shows up so much sooner in the first anime that it's hard to come to terms that she's still a relatively ne...more

Volume five had some ups and had some downs. I loved reading about Rush Valley and getting to see this auto-mail mecca and the engineers (and people in need of them!) that lived there. Also reading about the story and the lessons learned by and from the pick pocket was good fun. Who knew one girl could give two alchemists so much trouble? And she does! It’s great fun! The most powerful part of the book was where the boys learned the limits of alchemy and the wonders of the human condition as the...more
Winry takes charge of an unexpected birth, and we finally get to meet Izumi Curtis, the boys' alchemy teacher. The flashback in this volume works much better than the flashback in a later volume regarding the Ishbal civil war. The reveal of Ed's watch and what it means to him--and the fact he hasn't even shown it to Al--is heartbreaking and fabulous. This volume does a great job of giving us a real sense of the depth of these characters.

Unfortunately this volume doesn't have much to offer to the readers. While it provides a cute side story focusing on Winry and automail, it's not nearly as good as the earlier arcs in the first five.
It also leads into some potentially interesting storylines as Ed and Alphonse return to their alchemy teacher.
But that's not really delved into in this volume. I have high hopes for vol. 6.

I recently finished the excellent 51-episode Fullmetal Alchemist anime, which turned me on to the manga. The manga is still in publication, and the two plots diverge around Volume 6. I'll probably be reading the earlier ones out of order because the public library's copies are scattered at multiple branches.
