I've been in a book reviewing slump lately, and it's just occurred to me that one way to get out of it might be to write just something, anything, about any book without worrying about "writing well" or "saying something interesting". It also occurred to me that there are many keen Scaredy Squirrel fans among my goodreads friends who might like to see a report, however brief and flippant, about the latest book in the series, which I paged through in the children's section of a Bord...more

This is the fifrth Sscaredy Squirrel book and I’ve read them all. They’re all great. This one is particularly funny and sweet. AND, it has dogs. Dogs! And cake! And a birthday party!
Scaredy plans his safe party for one, then changes his plans to include a thoughtful friend. But, all goes more than a bit haywire.
Kids who like birthdays, parties, dogs, squirrels, and funny picture books are likely to enjoy this one, and these books don’t have to be read in order although of course, I recommend it,...more

Mommy's review from 11/20/11 -
2.5 - Wow, so everybody really loves this book huh? I'm glad I didn't hate it or I'd have to deal with a bunch of ignorant comments from ignorant people here on lovely GR but anyhoo....
I guess I don't see what all the fuss is about. It's a decent book IMO but far from great. There's a lesson or two able to be gleaned, the illustrations were somewhat unique to us, but that's about it. I guess Julia and I are more of the straight forward story type. We tend to dislik...more

The fifth in the very popular Scaredy Squirrel series has Scaredy planning his own birthday party. He wants it to be quiet and private, because that’s how he can avoid any surprises. Surprises like Bigfoot, confetti and ponies must be avoided! He carefully plans his solo party with lists and charts, but even then he is surprised by what he finds in his mailbox. It’s a birthday card from Buddy. So Scaredy decides that he will invite just one guest in addition to himself. Now he has to rethink the...more
Jake's Review: It was hilarious. Scaredy always makes me smile and laugh. He is soooooo weird (Mom, what do you mean by isn't that the pot calling the kettle black) but if he was real I would hang out with him. I hope Melanie keeps writing Scaredy books. You guys do know that my Mom has TWO Scaredy puppets right. She has one at home for "us" and one at work -- isn't that kind of weird for an old mom -- than again she is a Librarian. I think this is a book everybody would like and it is my favori...more

Scaredy Squirrel is at again. I love this little whimp. These books just make me laugh out loud. I especially loved the clown fish. They always have tricks up their sleeves, but old Scaredy has that base covered with a bust of Beethoven. If he humors them with a hard-headed guest who will never crack a smile, well then he's covered. As he plans his party (of one) he has his lists as always. There will be no porcupines. Porcupines and balloons: need I say more? If disaster pops up he's got his go...more
We've enjoyed the Scaredy Squirrel series of stories and this one was fun to read aloud. Scaredy wants to have a birthday party, but invites only himself at first, as he wants to avoid any unpleasant surprises which might spoil his party. As is typical in this series, Scaredy is pushed to expand his plans beyond his comfort level and the chaos that ensues is shocking for him, but as he discovers, it's also a lot of fun. We enjoyed reading this story together. And I loved the recipe for Nutty Cak...more
The paranoid squirrel is back and is having a birthday party in his beloved nut tree.....for one! Every detail is planned except, of course, for the unexpected. When Scaredy gets a surprise in the mail his sense of politeness prompts him to change his party plans to include one additional guest, his friend Buddy the dog. But an extra guest means moving the party to ground level and a revision in his carefully made plans. More unexpected surprises at the party cause chaos, panic and the usual nee...more
So many things frighten Scaredy Squirrel. He wants to have a birthday party, but he’s worried about all the things that could ruin his party: clownfish, ants, ponies, porcupines, confetti, and Bigfoot. He makes plans to thwart trouble. He only invites one friend. Unexpectedly many, many party animals appear and Scaredy Squirrel panics.

Orville. That's Scaredy Squirrel's middle name. Orville. Learned that today.
It's Scaredy Squirrel's birthday, and he's planning a nice, quiet, safe celebration in his tree, alone. After all, many things can spoil a party--Bigfoot, confetti, clownfish, ants, porcupines, or even ponies. When he receives a birthday card in the mail, he decides maybe he should invite the friend who sent the card, Buddy the dog. Scaredy has accounted for every variable, but when it's party time, Buddy shows up with...more

I love Scaredy. I know. It's silly humor. But it's silly humor at its funnest finest. There is a predicatable pattern for each book, but fun to see the applications to the particular fears. And I love seeing how much detail Watt puts in to some things that could easily be passed over. I love how scared he is, what some of his fears are, how he plans to resolve those fears, that he always panics and plays dead, and that he learns a lesson and basically gets over his silly fears. These books are a...more

The fifth book in Melanie Watt’s Scaredy Squirrel series, Scaredy Squirrel Has a Birthday Party, is quite similar to the third book, Scaredy Squirrel Goes to the Beach: Scaredy is quite certain that he would prefer to spend his birthday celebrations alone in the comfort and safety of his own tree, that he doesn’t want to venture down for a party where there would be raucous people, falling confetti, and loud music, just like how he doesn’t want to leave his tree to go to the beach, instead doing...more
Scaredy Squirrel is planning his birthday party and he's making sure that everything goes perfectly.... that includes making sure he has his birth certificate, unwelcome guests stay away (guests such as ants, porcupines and confetti...), and that he's mailed his party invitations to the one guest he is inviting (himself). The illustrations are fun because they include charts and maps. Of course the party ends a little differently than Scaredy plans! A fun read-aloud for children, recommended age...more
Scaredy Squirrel plans a birthday party for one because he's too afraid of the surprises (clownfish, bigfoot, ants, confetti, ponies, and porcupines) that could spoil a nice quiet party. After receiving a birthday card from Buddy, he replans the party for two. And when he plans, he plans down to the very last detail. So what will Scaredy Squirrel do when his party is crashed by party animals?!

Scaredy Squirrel plans a solo birthday party for himself. He decides to take the risk and invite dog...when lots of "party animals" show up, Scaredy Squirrel panics. Will he be able to recover and enjoy the party?
This is the first time that Scaredy Squirrel's tendency to play dead annoyed me. I am not sure why. I do see how his over-the-top anxiety/OCD-like issues, plans, and freak outs could be funny but I think the presentation is mildly offensive and maybe even stereotypical.

Scaredy Squirrel, my hero, is planning a small, quiet, and tragedy free birthday party. However, an act of kindness from a friend reminds him that sharing his special day with another would be preferable. As always our cautious hero takes every precaution to make his plans impervious to such dangers as: Big Foot, confetti, porcupines, ponies, ants, and those pesky clownfish that could possibly harm him or his party guests. Will the excitement be too much for Scaredy? Will he choke to death on a...more
I've been reading all the Scaredy Squirrel books to see if they get repetitive after a while. Well, they are repetitive. But it doesn't bother me, and I don't think it will bother children.
The story is different every time, although it follows the same 'format' where one page is what Scaredy is afraid of, one page is his schedule, one page is his plan for what he's going to do to survive against what he's afraid of. Each story is just as funny and endearing as the last. Plus the illustrations ar...more

I think Mélanie Watt is a genius. Both the Scaredy Squirrel books and her Chester books are inventive, witty, and completely charming. I think this series in particular is great for children who deal with a lot of anxiety and fears. This book was a complete hit with my 7 year old, my 2 year old, and me. What happens when our ever cautious squirrel gets more than he bargained for at his carefully planned birthday party? A lot of fun!
According to Scaredy Squirrel birthday parties are a liability. What if there is confetti, or an uninvited Porcupine!? What if Big Foot shows up!? To minimize risk Scaredy Squirrel plans the perfect party for one, complete with safety goggles. When party animals arrive at his tree without warning, the birthday boy panics! Will Scaredy Squirrel be able to snap out of his conniption fit and have some fun? Cartoony and hilarious.
The classic scaredy squires is in full effect with this book. He plans a birthday party for himself, just himself, and all of his friends end up showing up so......he plays dead. In the end he realizes its not that bad and decides to invite his friends next year too. This book could be used to show children that although things don't always go as planned, it could turn out even better.
The Scaredy Squirrel books are not only funny with interesting plot lines, but very detailed in its writing style. Melanie Watt incorporates different types of diagrams, labeling, and lists to her stories, to help readers get inside this truly neurotic, but loveable squirrel. Also, a great book for teacher the character goal of being an explorer (trying new things).

Another winner. Though I have to admit the books are so full of small details and neuroses that I would never have guessed kids would love so much ... kudos to the publisher who gave her a chance!
I predict long hold lists for this title. The little ones don't usually bother but I do believe they will make an exception this time.

Not that I am particularly Scaredy, but being an introvert I can totally understand Scaredy Squirrel's desire for a nice, quite party for one (with no loud noises, ants, or Bigfoot.) As always, Scaredy's plans go awry and he must learn to adapt to the unexpected and still have fun. A good lesson for kids and grown-ups alike.
Scaredy Squirrel carefully plans his birthday parties and only invites himself since inviting others could be risky. But he changes his mind and invites Buddy and the birthday doesn't go exactly as planned.
I like the Scaredy Squirrel series of books. It's interesting to see the plans Scaredy comes up to stay safe.

Silliness abounds in Scaredy's latest adventure... luckily, Scaredy is organized and prepared as always for every possible disaster that might befall a birthday party.
The only possible downside to this one... it's hard to enjoy in a large group because there are so many chuckle-inducing checklists and details that beg to be pored over closely.
