Why, yes, I just read a media tie-in book, purportedly penned by the fictional character in a teevee show.

What?

Shut up.

For those of you not aware, Castle is a teevee show where a popular mystery writer, played by the squee-worthy Canadian, Nathan Fillion, shadows a cop in her quest for truth and justice and stuff. Oh, and also, her mom was murdered, which makes her deep. I like the show. It's one of those unlikely, will-they-or-won't-they stylized procedurals that isn't afraid to pull a meta g...more

I’m happy to report, this was a huge improvement from the previous book (Heat Wave). While the first one came through as more of an inside joke, riding the tidal wave of the Castle TV show and seemed more like a fanfiction than an actual book written by a “New York Times Bestselling Author”, this one actually read like a book.

The writing and style was the first obvious improvement, the characters had (a little) more depth— though still not enough for my liking, the pacing was good, and so was th...more

It sounds kind of stupid in this day and age, but this book was written with a kind of sexist mentality. Usually the sex of the (anonymous) author plays only a little into the writing, and rarely detracts from the story, but this whole thing is a bad joke.

The story is supposed to be about this awesome female detective, but it undermines that whole idea repeatedly. It makes multiple commentary within the writing of the character being "balsy" as a positive, (obviously male, and as positive ass...more

I know I started off my review of the first Nikki Heat book with the disclaimer that I’m a big fan of the TV show Castle, and that my devotion to the show would undoubtedly color my review. I’m going to tell you right now, internets, that while I am just as devoted to the show as I was before, I don’t feel that disclaimer is warranted in this case. And no, I was not contacted by Hyperion or ABC to say any of this…although, if y’all are reading, I would happily accept meeting Nathan Fillion as a...more

This is the second book of the Heat series I have read. The Author’s purpose of writing this book again is to dig deeper into the Castle fan base and how Heat and Rook interact with each other. This book is also based on the TV series Castle. Richard Castle, now Beckett’s partner helps her solve cases while getting new ideas for his book. This is his second book called Naked Heat. In this book, Heat has started a new case and is working on the case. Then suddenly, she gets a call about another c...more

Richard Castle graces us fans with his second 'novel' based on Detective Kate Beckett, Nicki Heat. This time Jameson Rook (Castle's on page persona in the Nikki Heat series) is found right in the thick of the crime. Cassidy Towne, NYC gossip columnist and muckraker is found murdered in her home. Who's there to greet Heat and company as they take the call? None other than Jameson Rook.

If you're a fan of the Castle TV show, this sounds strangely close to the season three opener, and it is. But tha...more

My favourite TV show in a book? Whooa. Life could not have been better! Castle- an ABC TV show could not have been better. The show has humour, drama, mystery, murders, romance and everything needed to make it a hit. And even though I am not an avid TV-watcher, Castle does make me and my sisters put our endless pile of novels aside. Unfortunately for us, the show has very less episodes and even less seasons. So, when I discovered that the N...more

Naked Heat (Nikki Heat #2)Naked Heat by Richard Castle

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I finished Naked Heat (Nikki Heat and it was great :) I don't usually rate these books because my enjoyment and those of others would probably be slanted by how much of the In Death books and the Castle TV show you are familiar with, they will stand on their on as good books but those mental images and reference do add to my personal enjoyment. I can only say that I highly recommend the 2 I have read so far and if you have enjoyed the In Death...more

THIS REVIEW IS FOR ALL THREE OF THE CURRENTLY AVAILABLE BOOKS IN THE SERIES: I've been eyeing these books for awhile, but couldn't decide if they were worth a try or not. This series is based on the conceit that the character on ABC's mystery series CASTLE writes the books, and in fact ABC has persisted in not revealing the real author. This doesn't seem quite fair to the whoever the writer is, since these books are actually very well written and quite enjoyable. I picked up the first one throug...more

I admit it. I enjoy watching Nathan Fillion. I enjoyed watching Firefly more intensely than Castle, but I’m happy that Castle exists because I believe strongly in this man’s right to have a steady acting job so that I can enjoy a steady diet of his roguish sense of humor.

As a mostly regular Castle watcher, I noticed a smudge in the line of reality when those Nikki Heat books that Nathan Fillion’s character writes on the show suddenly starting popping up in my local bookstore. I resisted buying t...more

Richard Castle books are a lot like potato chips--you can't read just one. As soon as I finished Heat Wave (see review) I started craving another Castle book, and I caved in within a couple of days and started Naked Heat. It was pure indulgence, and I loved every sinful page of it.

This story starts with Lt. Nikki Heat and her two detectives Raley and Ochoa discovering Jameson Rook at the scene of a recent homicide, listening to his iPod, with...more

This is the second book written by the fictional novelist Richard Castle about the fictional police detective Kate Beckett (or Nikki Heat in the novel). It's the closest thing to a Castle tie-in book you'll ever get, but with a metafictional twist. The first book was ok. Naked Heat starts off as just ok, but soon becomes the better sequel. The murder mystery is better constructed, for one thing, with lots of potential suspects as well as action scenes that aren't far off from Castle's. You could...more

Length: 11 Hours
Listened at 2x Speed

This one is kind of a slow read—not in pacing, but in narration. I even tried speeding up the audio more than 2x but my player starts chopping at that speed. The slower pace of speech might conflict a bit with the more exciting scenes, but at least you shouldn't have any worries about mishearing him.

Voice acting is not really his strong suit (something I find more common with male readers than female) but he does make due. I thought it was kinda cool that he a...more

Mini Book Review: I have to read these since I am a huge Castle fan, I just can't help myself. I love the fact that they have a picture of Nathan Fillion on the back cover as the author, makes me giggle. I know they are gimmicky and the writing not the best, but I still really enjoy them. This story was no exception. It's fast paced and filled with fun TV style dialogue. The characters are loosely based on the actual characters on the show which makes it lots of fun. Also some of the plot is tak...more

While this was a vast improvement from the first Nikki Heat book, it still left me wanting more.

There were several plot points that I felt went ignored, or forgotten until the last minute. They all somehow tied neatly into the ending with no real explanation as to how they got there or what the reasoning was for them (namely the romance between Nikki and some characters). It just left too many questions and not enough explanation or a good reason for no explanation.

That said, the pace of the boo...more

This is the second Nikki Heat adventure I've decided to tag along on and I wasn't too disappointed with the outcome.

This time, Nikki is called to the scene of a recent murder and finds Jameson Rook on the scene waiting for her. He has been shadowing gossip columnist, Cassidy Towne, she of the poisoned pen and vicious bite, for another profile. Nikki is still burning from all the attention she's gotten since Rook lauded her in print on every news stand in New York City and she doesn't need Rook...more

Perhaps the coolest thing about the Heat series is the fact that it's written in correlation with the television show Castle. On the show, the main character, Richard Castle, is an author who works with a NYC detective, helping her to solve murder cases while he does research for his novels whose main character is based upon her. When the character on the show releases a new book, the network releases that book to the show's fans. I think this is so ingenious... and the books are entertaining, t...more

Premise: Richard Castle lives in my reality.
-> The second installment of the series, featuring Nikki Heat, a homicide detective, and Jameson Rook, journalist, as the main characters, shows that Castle managed to get to know his characters more. Not just is the story more complex, involving several suspects and murders, but the characters also feel more rounded and human. I enjoyed Naked Heat more than his predecessor and am looking forward to the next chapter Heat Rises. Castle must have don...more

When I first heard of these novels, I cringed inwardly and even scoffed at the whole idea. Now, I'm sheepishly (and reluctantly) impressed by this marketing scheme-- and I'm usually not one to be attracted to something like this, if that's worth anything.

That being stated, if you're a fan of the TV show, these books are truly worth your while. They're well written, clever, funny-- and you are constantly reminded of different events in the show, which are supposed to be the very source of "Richar...more

4.5 stars. Another book that ties in to the show Castle, and another winner! Detective Nikki Heat is back, this time investigating the murder of a gossip columnist who seemed to be hated by everyone, and writer Jameson Rook is back as well, working alongside her and the rest of the force. Cassidy Towne, the late gossip columnist, had so many enemies that it's hard to narrow down the list of suspects, but Heat and Rook do their best canvassing the city and delving into all sorts of scandals that...more

I'm amazed at how good these books have been and really quite curious about the ghostwriter. Whoever is in charge of these things has certainly come up with an excellent way to do tie-in novels to the TV show... by making it the fictional creation of a fictional character. You've got most of the characters from the show present (I do miss Alexis in these books), with only slight alterations to make them different from the "real people" they represent... the voices for each are spot on and the pl...more

My wife and I are fans of Castle on ABC TV.
I bought and read "Heat Wave", the first of the two Richard Castle books, as soon as it was published. Mostly I read ebooks on the Kindle. To say I bought the Castle books hardcover means something, I think.

As exciting as these thrillers are, I perked up when I found a professional writing lesson. I'm in week 13 of a 52-week online writing course from Publication Coach Daphne Gray-Grant. If you skip to Chapter 17 of "Heat Wave", you'll find a lesson in...more

Another installment for fans of the ABC TV show "Castle", "Naked Heat" continues the adventures of NYPD detective Nikki Heat (based on the TV show character "Kate Beckett") about 6 months after "Heat Wave". Although my primary complaint about "Heat Wave" (the constant use of Nikki Heat's full name throughout the narrative) is still partly there, this book is superior to its predecessor in several ways.

First off, there is more to the 2nd novel. Where the first book felt like you were reading a lo...more

If you set aside an hour on Monday evenings to watch ABC's popular show “Castle,” you'll want to spend a few hours curled up with Richard Castle's second novel, NAKED HEAT, starring tough, beautiful, smart NYPD Detective Nikki Heat. The first Castle novel, Heat Wave, spent 16 weeks on the NY Times bestseller list - this non-stop action follow-up seems headed in the same direction.

Once again Nikki is pursued by handsome Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Jameson Rook. Glib, ardent, and persisten...more

Naked Heat by Richard Castle (pp. 288)

A prominent New York gossip columnist, Cassidy Towne is murdered and her mysterious salacious tell-all is missing. More bodies keep dropping. Nikki Heat, the now famous NYC detective and Jameson Rook, the writer who made her famous are thrown back together to solve Towne’s murder.

Based on the main characters of the hit TV series, Castle, the second installment reads much better. It’s more interesting and delivers at a solid pace. There is less distractions...more

Well, this is a weird book. It's the second book written by Richard Castle, who is a fictional character on the TV show "Castle". Like the first, it's about characters who are very similar, though not identical, to the characters on the show.

In this one, a gossip writer has been killed, and Nikki Heat is struggling with her own brush with fame as a result of Jameson Rook's article about her.

I'm not a fan of the writing style. There are words that trip me up. There are acronyms that aren't explai...more

It's not quite as delightful as the last novel novel, but this new production of "Richard Castle" or whoever is writing for him is still pretty darn fun. If it wasn't attached to a television show, this would be, at best, a mid-level airplane read -- the kind of thing it would be fine to pass two hours with in an enclosed space that offers limited options. The attachment to the TV show "Castle," though, makes it an extension of a world I'm already amused by, though not exactly in a fan-fiction t...more
