Bad. Bad. Bad.
I am still wondering what the author really wanted to tell me. It is so boring. Nothing really happens and the whole story is seriously blah, blah, blah. All characters are boring and totally so not interesting.
And yes, I hated the movie, too.
Such crap!
Do not read. Seriously!

Sansibar oder der letzte Schund. - Sansibar or the last tripe.
Required reading in high school. One of the many excruciating books I was forced to read I in school and which turned me off books during high school.

Where is the "I FUCKING HATED IT" button?
Reading this at school was really traumatic because I loathed it!

Schon seit so vielen Jahren mein Lieblingsbuch. Oft kopiert, nie erreicht.
Another story that takes place prior to World War II, this book revolves around several characters who are all trying to "escape" a certain north-German coastal town. They all have different reasons for wanting to leave, but the common barrier for all of them is the rising threat of the Nazi party. The prose in this book is absolutely beautiful and the different story lines are very compelling. This is actually my second or third time reading this, the first time being in the mid 90s. ...more
This short novel is indeed a masterpiece composed by Alfred Andersch. He succeeds to narrate the odyssey of almost all individulas mentioned in the book: Pastor Helander, Knudsen, Gregor, Judith and the boy. Every one of them is in fact a protagonist himself and it is joyful to see how all of them playing their own notes are finally orchestrated.
What a beautiful, important, well-written story about a very diverse group of people coming together during the 2nd world war - each with their own agenda and yet all playing a part in doing the same good thing. Very surprised this wasn't on my school's reading list.
