"Judy Moody was in a mood. Not a good mood. A bad mood. A mad-faced mood."

To start, Judy Moody doesn't have high hopes for third grade. Her new desk won't have an armadillo sticker with her name on it. Her new classroom will not have a porcupine named Roger. And with her luck, she'll get stuck sitting in the first row, where Mr. Todd...more

Chapter book - series
For 2nd-4th grade

Judy Moody starts 3rd grade and struggles to find a good mood while she deals with her little brother, school projects, and friendships in this funny chapter book.

Divided into fairly episodic short chapters, this entertaining read tells the story of how Judy Moody started third grade. Younger readers will feel for Judy's bad moods and frustrations over the class's "Me" project and the attempts at friendship from paste-eating boys. Judy is no girly girl, and...more

This review consists of two parts: 1. My daughter's review (she's 8) and 2. my review (the Mom's).

DAUGHTER SAYS:

I think Judy Moody is funny and I would be friends with her in real life. We have some things that are the same; like, we're both in Grade 3, we both have little brothers, and we both have a pet cat. There are some really funny parts in this book. In a spelling test, Judy has to find five words out of GINO'S EXTRA CHEESE PIZZA, she finds the words tree, Texas, and taxi, but instead she...more

I brought the book on Kindle after seeing the movie. I liked the movie (Judy Moody and the not bummer summer) because I related to Judy as I had a summer where two of my friends moved away, so I knew how she felt. I was curious about the books after the movie so I picked up the first one.

Was very impressed with Judy Moody. She wasn't over-the-top attitude like you find a lot in kids stories (especially in movies) and her parents were actually parental (rare!). Stink was cute too. The illustrati...more

Transitional: Judy Moody by Megan McDonald is about a sassy, young girl who is entering the third grade. She is was "in a mood. Not a good mood. A bad mood. A mad-faced mood." Judy Moody is not mentally prepared for this transition and does not like all of the changes that are taking place. She is upset that she will not longer have Roger, the porcupine as a classroom pet. Judy Moody thinks of every possible thing that could go wrong and is pessimistic, but hilarious as she discusses her first d...more

I finished this in a very short time, but in that span of time, I got a whole lot out of it. This is Judy Moody's first book. We're introduced to this girl, who isn't like your average girl. She's different. As the cover states, "Judy Moody was in a mood. Not a good mood. A bad mood." Judy is certainly different. She has grouchy pencils (which I want!), hundreds of cool band-aids and a set goal in mind for her future. It's nice reading about a 3rd grader set on becoming a doctor and already prep...more

Judy Moody is a fun series for young readers, with a spunky heroine who isn't afraid to get her hands dirty. Judy wants to be a doctor when she grows up, is constantly being annoyed by her younger brother Stink, has a bunch of collections of things, and has a Venus fly-trap as a pet. In this first book of the series, she has to figure out what things make her Judy Moody, since her third-grade teacher assigned them to make a ME collage—what will she put on her poster?

I've seen this series around...more

Recommended for: Boys or girls, aged 6 through 8. Though this series features a female protagonist, Judy is sufficiently tomboyish enough to appeal to both genders.

One Word Summary: Feisty

If the quirky and imaginative Julia Gillian were to have a spiky, fearless little sister, she would be Judy Moody. Brash, temperamental, creative and generous, not only is Judy Moody the perfect book-best friend, she’s also a relieving antidote to all the syrupy...more

ilustrasi sampul, kirain judy ini tokoh cowok, ternyata cewek. pantes banget mood na sering naik turun (kq jadi gender gini ya?). saat habis kesempatam liburan na dan kembali masuk sekolah, siapa sih yang ga malas. dari kehidupan bebas kembali ke rutinitas. wajarlah kalau mood judy ga bagus. nam...more

I'm tutoring a student this summer who is reading independently at the third grade level. She really enjoys Judy Moody. It is readily comprehensible for her and she can summarize it using the "Somebody Wanted But So" strategy.

Although the chapters can sometimes seem a bit disjointed, they are episodic, and McDonald comes full circle in the end. Judy is a character who has a mind of her own and is not afraid to speak it. She is not overly concerned with the feelings of others, particularly Frank...more

Judy Moody. Lagi mood. Bukan mood bagus. Mood jelek. Liburan udah selesai. Waktunya masuk sekolah. Tapi dia belom pergi kemana-mana selama liburan musim panas. Untunglah, dia udah makan ikan hiu. Jadi, mood jeleknya sedikit terobati.

Judy Moody. Lagi mood. Bukan mood bagus. Mood jelek. Sampulnya bagus. Keren. Ada bolongannya. Delapan buah. Kenapa delapan? Karena huruf ‘o’-nya ada delapan. Kalo yang dibolongin huruf ‘d’, maka bolongannya hanya ada lima. Ngga penting deh, bahas bolongan. Pokoknya k...more

Judy Moody starts off third grade in a very bad mood, but the experience grows on her when her class is assigned a project to create a “me” collage.

The black and white images made with watercolors, pencil, and ink appear throughout the story to supplement various scenes (such as Judy’s attendance at Frank’s birthday party and a delightfully jumbled, two-page spread of Judy’s completed “me” collage). Though the images aren’t essential to the understanding of the story, they are a nice touch that...more

Judy is not happy about starting third grade, where she just knows she will have to sit next to Frank again. Frank, who eats paste and who gave her five valentines in kindergarten, cupcakes on numerous holidays in first grade, and who indeed is in the seat next to her when she arrives in her third grade classroom, and immediately passes her an invitation to his birthday party. Sheesh!

Plus, unlike all the kids, she doesn't have a shirt that says something, like Orlando, or Paris, or... anything!...more

The first day of third grade puts Judy Moody in a bad mood. She just knows everyone will come back from summer vacation with word T-shirts, like "Disney World" or "Jamestown: Home of Pocahontas." All Judy has is a plain old no-word T-shirt. She'll have to go to a new classroom, with a new desk, and she won't have an armadillo sticker with her name on it like she did last year. And knowing her luck, she'll end up sitting next to Frank, the boy who eats paste. For breakfast her dad makes eggs with...more

This book is about a third grader named Judy Moody. She's in this mood a lot. A bad mood. First, she starts off her day bad because she is starting third grade. She did not go anywhere interesting like everyone else. So when she gets to class, she gets an invitation to Frank's birthday party which is 2 weeks away. Also an assignment for a presentation about her. She ends up going even though she doesn't want to and becomes best friends with him. Also finishes her poster. Judy is in a very good m...more

I first read all of the books about Stink before beginning my introduction to the Judy Moody series and was defiantly not disappointed. Judy Moody was just that moody. Sometimes her mood was bad, good and she even had a "back to school mood," but most of all she had them all. Written in short chapters the book details some of the events and her feelings with the beginning of third grade. What with having to sit next to the boy who eats paste and not her best friend Rocky, and even having to comp...more

This is the second Judy Moody book we've read and we've really enjoyed both of them. Although the moodiness can get a little old, our girls can really empathize with her experiences, her joys, her anxieties, her frustrations, her collections... And the story is humorous and fast paced. We will definitely look for more Judy Moody stories.

Judy Moody was in quite a mood because her summer ended too quickly, her new third grade class would be nothing like second grade and she would probably get stuck in the front row by Frank "the paste eater". During her first day she has some spunk and attitude but then her mood changes after they are assigned an "All about Me" collage. Judy Moody decides it won't be so bad after all. The entire book is spent learning about Judy and her family while she creates her collage. We meet her best frien...more

Judy Moody is a book about a young girl who is entering the third grade. Judy Moody is a normal young girl, who experiences ups and downs that life has to offer. This short chapter book would be a great book for students to read who are beginning to transition to reading chapter books, in the second or third grade for example. The main character, Judy Moody, has high hopes to be a doctor one day, and practices on her pet and younger brother to get some experience. Judy Moody is not always in a h...more

This first book in the Judy Moody series is a real heart-warmer. Judy is dreading starting third grade until she learns about the "All About Me" project her teacher assigns. She has to think of things about her life to fit categries like "The Worst Thing Ever", "The Funniest Thing Ever", "My Favorite Pet" , etc and that sends her on a self-exploration journey. The drawings are funny and complement the text (see the drawing of Judy's father on page 77 as her tries to fix her Hedda-Get-Betta doll...more

Judy Moody is a sassy, spirited third grader who is charged with the task of introducing herself to her classmates. As Judy pieces together her “Me-Collage,” readers meet a girl who is actively creating herself through her choices and experiences, proclaiming who she is and who she wants to become with a defiant “ROAR!” This book is a non-stop, giggle-fest. Megan McDonald brilliantly captures the idiosyncrasies of childhood and the silliness that adults often outgrow. After reading Judy Moody, e...more

For a few years now, probably close to ten, I have been meaning to read a Judy Moody book. The covers and titles have always caught my attention, but whenever I was in the book store I was always after something else specific. It is my loss. Recently I received a review copy of Stink and the Midnight Zombie Walk one of the Stink Moody books and loved it. I have since tracked down all the Judy and Stink books and will be reading them soon. They have jumped to the top of my to-be-read pile of book...more

The first day of third grade puts Judy Moody in a mad-face mood and doesn't leave her with high hopes for third grade. She doesn't want to have to deal with a new class, desk, or any of the same things she had last year. She doesn't like her breakfast and she doesn't get along with her younger brother. Needless to say, Judy Moody is in a very bad mood, but it doesn't last long. Mr. Todd assigns the class a special Me Project, so now Judy Moody will get to express herself! She sets off on a huge...more

Life is such a disappointment when an uneventful summer comes to an end with nothing to show for it. Judy Moody is an outgoing, spunky third grader who will have readers laughing as they witness the relatable perils that befall her on a daily basis, from having to sit next to Frank Eats-Paste Pearl in school to getting peed on by a toad, sparking on the need for Judy and her best friend Rocky to create the exclusive Toad Pee Club. This beginning of the eight-part Judy Moody series introduces rea...more

Judy Moody is about a girl with a rather sour attitude entering the 3rd grade. She is dreading leaving everything familiar in her 2nd grade class behind, especially her desk with the sticker on it. In her new class her teacher Mr. Todd assigns them a project called a "Me Collage". The students have to make a collage with different items that represent themselves. Through adventures with her friends and family Judy comes up with all the things to add to her collage. She presents her collage to the...more

Dear Readers,

Yesterday, I read this book called Judy Moody, written by Megan McDonald. This book was about Judy the main character having lots of troubles because of Frank who sits next to her in class. Judy doesn't like him. But oneday Judy got invited by Frank's birthday party. Judy didn't want to go but Frank's mom told her to come and her parents want her to go. So she went to his birthday party but there were only boys and Judy was the only one who was a girl. She didn't wanted to do anyth...more

My favorite so far in my effort to read at least one of the most popular series in my K-8 library. It seems like a perfect step up/way for students to transition from Junie B. Jones, but I liked Judy as a character so much better. Maybe just because she's a bit older (3rd grade), but I appreciated that she has real interests and goals for her future (to be a doctor!). Also, in a few instances just as you expected her to have a tantrum or go off on her little brother like so many other characters...more

Judy Moody is a popular series book that I remember from MY childhood! Reading it over 10 years later, I'm still just as impressed.
The first Judy Moody book by Megan McDonald is a story of situations about a girl named Judy who is transitioning into the third grade. Judy learns how to deal with the many emotion of dealing with different "third grade" situations such as teachers, little brothers, homework and life in general. I enjoyed this book because it seems true to life for any third grader....more

"Sometimes I think I am Judy Moody," says Megan McDonald, author of the Judy Moody series, the Stink series, and THE SISTERS CLUB. "I'm certainly moody, like she is. Judy has a strong voice and always speaks up for herself. I like that."

For Megan McDonald, being able to speak up for herself wasn't always easy. She grew up as the youngest of five sisters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her father, an...more
