This is a very interesting possibility that the identity of Jack the Ripper may have been discovered. It has many clues that do lead me to believe that the identity is in fact James Maybrick. The book goes on to discuss that although the diary has not been proven to be 100% genuine, it has also not been proven to be a hoax or fake...... what a life James & Florie Maybrick lead! I do believe that his drug use of Arsenic killed him and not his wife as she was accused of. I felt bad for her throug More...

I chose to read this book for a book report in high school. This book really depends on personal preference. Personally, I love investigating about serial killers and their thought process. This book is stated to be a diary; however, because the identity of Jack the Ripper was never solved, no one can ever be 100% sure if this is truly his diary. The book is clearly from the perspective of Jack the Ripper and allows readers to go along his murderous journey with him: what he was thinking before, More...

"The Diary of Jack the Ripper" has the unenviable position of being one of the more recent entries into the "final solution" books on the Victorian serial killer. In all fairness to this book, I think nearly any book hitting this saturated genre is to be expected to be faced with criticism and skepticism.
What makes this book different from earlier books and books published since this one is this book purports to be the actual diary of James Maybrick, a cotton merchant More...

I so far have found this very intriguing. Just the way he describes his own life and the fact that the investigators find his wife guilty of his own death but find him to be just like the man next door. The way he describes his victims is truly sickling and so discomforting. I find it hard to believe that some one could write this and get so much into the mind of a murderer without actually being the murderer and the clues in the book that have been left at the crime scene is real as I have gone More...

I thought that this book offered a chilling insight into the mind of a serial killer, and a drug addict (even if the drugs being used are no longer abused today). I liked that the author explained the authentication process of the purported diary, and that a copy of the actual diary was included... it allows the tangibility of the diary's existence to sink in when a reader can view it for him/herself. A very good addition to the "true crime" genre.

Adorei!

Interesting book, it told the story of the man people believe to be Jack the Ripper. The book also includes the supposed diary of the killer.
The story itself was really interesting but I didn't read the diary. After just a few entries I didn't like the way I was feeling or the craziness of the writer.

this was ok to read but i find it hard to believe the diary is real because if it was it would have been all over the papers that the REAL jack the ripper had been unmasked its alot of speculation and camera trickery i think ( the fm on the wall by mary kellys body).

A very interesting piece, especially if it proves to be real! Unfortunately, the major opinion is that it is a modern fraud even in the absence of any verifiable problems with paper, ink, turn of phrase anomalies.
I myself find it to be a fascinating read, wholly believable as the writings and rantings of a tortured soul, just as the ripper must have been. Both psychologists and handwriting analysts agree that the author of these musings exhibit a personality to be feared, as do I.

Very poor. The diary has been proven as a forgery, making it worthless in most respects, perhaps other than demonstrating the extent to which a hoaxer will go.

I don't believe the subject of the study is the original Jack The Ripper Diary but a forgery, but the book is a very interesting one about the famous serial killer.

A hugely entertaining and interesting book, a must read for all True Crime/Ripper fans; regardless of if you believe Maybrick to be the real Jack or not.

Forget that this book has been utterly debunked. It's a captivating read for any serious Ripperologist, which I have been since age 10. (Creepy, I know.)

Can't be sure I want to place it in non-fiction. Read the Foreword. It is not convencing enough to be lifted above conspiracy theory.

Great book, provides good evidence suggesting Maybrick to be the ripper, but I also like that the book includes differing opinions on the authenticity of the diary. Probably one of the most intriguing unsolved mysteries. This book has also interested me in Florie's trial as well.

Erittäin uskottava teoria, vaikka se onkin käsitykseni mukaan todettu epätodeksi.

First things first.
Know that this book is a falsehood: the 'diary of Jack the Ripper' was a very carefully-forged hoax. Approaching the book with that in mind makes it a rather good read, actually: the mental exercise involved in trying to spot the 'tells'- the moments where the author points us away from the rational and logical conclusion- is quite entertaining.

Now, dont think I am crazy by saying that I thought this diary was absolutley cruel, twisted, and amazing. If this man truly was Jack the Ripper, which can be very convincing once you read it, then I give him props. The way he talks about women and the things he does without remorse, and regret, just drives me insanley captivated by him.

Although it was later proved to be a fraudulent hoax, most of this book is of interest to true crime fans. The research is quite good, especially the information regarding James Maybrick as the possible serial killer himself.

It was an interesting read. I've always been fascinated by Jack the Ripper, what drove him to murder. Not just murder but brutally disfigure in the act.
