Based on the "Everhard Ms." written by Avis Everhard, hidden until found centuries later, this book contains introduction & footnotes by scholar Anthony Meredith. Meredith writes from c. 2600 (aka 419 BOM). London thus writes at two levels, having Meredith condescendingly correcting the errors of Everhard yet, at the same time, exposing an incomplete understanding from his distant future perspective.
The Ms. itself covers 1912-32 in which the Iron Heel Oligarchy arose in the USA. Japan conquered E. Asia, India became independent & Europe socialist. Canada, Mexico & Cuba formed their own oligarchies aligned with the USA.
In N. America, the Oligarchy maintains power for three centuries until the Revolution ushers in a Brotherhood of Man. During the years covered, the 1st Revolt is described & preparations for a 2nd are discussed. From Everhard's perspective, the imminent 2nd Revolt is sure to succeed but, from Meredith's, readers know her hopes were to be crushed for centuries to come.
The Oligarchy are the largest monopoly trusts who manage to squeeze out the middle class by bankrupting smaller business & reducing farmers to serfdom. They maintain power thru a labor caste & Mercenaries. Labor in essential industries like steel & rail are given decent wages, housing & education. The tragic turn in the novel--London's core warning--is the treachery of these favored unions which side with the Oligarchy. A 2nd, military caste is also formed. Mercenaries are officially the US army but serve the Oligarchy.
Asgard is a fictional wonder-city constructed to be admired as well as occupied. Proletarians live in poverty there, used whenever public works such as canals & levies are needed.
The Ms. is Everhard's autobiography. She tells of a privileged childhood as the daughter of a scientist; her marriage to the radical Ernest Everhard; the fall of the republic & her years in the underground from the 1st Revolt thru years leading to the 2nd. Telling Avis Everhard's story, the novel is essentially an adventure tale filled with social commentary of an alternate future. The later perspective of Meredith deepens the tragic plight of Everhard & her comrades.
Because The Iron Heel is now a century old, it has an alternate history feel. As with Orwell's 1984, the dating of the novel is in our past. London predicted a breakdown of the USA a few years past '08 but various events have caused his predicted future to diverge from actual history. Crucially, he predicted labor solidarity would prevent a war including the USA, Germany etc. in '13. History records nationalism overwhelming international solidarity. He predicted middle class shrinkage as monopolistic trusts crushed labor & smaller businesses. Instead the Progressive Era led to their breakup thru the application of the Sherman Antitrust Act in '11. At the same time, reforms such as union rights passed during the Progressive Era with further reforms during the 30s New Deal. Prosperity led to middle class growth after the '20s.
Thru the writing of Everhard & the distant future perspective of Meredith, London demonstrated his belief in Marx' historical materialism which predicted an inevitable succession from feudalism thru capitalism towards socialism.

Part science fiction, part dystopian fantasy, part radical socialist tract, Jack London's The Iron Heel offers a grim depiction of warfare between the classes in America and around the globe. Originally published nearly a hundred years ago, it anticipated many features of the past century, including the rise of fascism, the emergence of domestic terrorism, and the growth of centralized government surveillance and authority. What begins as a war of words ends in scenes of harrowing violence as the state oligarchy, known as the Iron Heel, moves to crush all opposition to its power. BACKCOVER: A truer prophecy of the future than either Brave New World or The Shape of Things to Come. Still more astonishing is the genuinely prophetic vision of the methods by which the Iron Heel will sustain its domination over crushed mankind.--Leon Trotsky

Jack London (1876-1916), at his peak, was the highest paid and the most popular of all living writers. Because of financial difficulties, he was largely self educated past grammar school. A large part of his knowledge was obtained from the Oakland Public Library.
London draws heavily on his life experiences in his writing. He spent time in the Klondike during the Gold Rush and at various times was an oyster pirate, a seaman, a sealer, and a hobo.
His first work was published in 1898. From there he went on to write such American classics as "Call of the Wild", "Sea Wolf", and "White Fang". Quiet Vision has published more than 20 of his works and is working to publish all his fiction.
