A fun primary source. The New York state legislature in 1807 gave broad power to a three-man team to lay out the future streets of New York City. The result was the massive grid of numbered "avenues" and "streets" still in use in Manhattan. This book describes the then-new (and extraordinarily ambitious) street plan and explains its rationale.
