Antes de mais, é preciso informar de que demorei uns quatro ou cinco meses a percorrer a viagem destas páginas. Comecei com o coração nas mãos e a indignação de quem vê o "simples" roubo de um chapéu punido com uma deportação desumana para a Austrália. Depois soube que a Mary Bryant, ou Broad, existiu mesmo e isso deu novo realismo à história. Li a primeira metade do livro de um sopro, a vida a bordo do Dunkirk - o tifo, a imundície, as febres, as intempéries, etc., os actos grotescos de uma das nações que se diz entre as mais civilizadas desde sempre. A partir da última metade, o livro torna-se entediante, aborrecido com pormenores de uma rotina miserável, pobre de alma e de condições humanas. Tanta desgraça junta... Mas enfim, o pior é que a sombra das catástrofes paira sobre todo o livro e esperamos, esperamos e esperamos por vê-la tomar os protagonistas. As últimas cem páginas deviam ter sido resumidas para 25. Achei que o ritmo geral do livro era lento. Ontem consegui tomá-lo pelos cornos e terminá-lo de vez, mas não tenho especial gosto por livros que me sabem a obrigação. Além disso detestei o facto de a Mary ser adorada por todos e de distribuir beijos nos lábios de todos como uma irmãzinha grata a dar esmolas aos tolos enamorados. Dou três porque o livro tem um evidente e trabalhoso trabalho de pesquisa por trás. Teve rasgos interessantes por entre outros que me causaram enfado. Em geral estou feliz que tenha acabado, foi uma leitura custosa e não estou a ver-me a passar por ela de novo.

“Maybe she wouldn’t be able to forgive him entirely, but for all that they had been to each other in the past, he deserved better than to die like a dog without one kind word.”

It struck me hard. It made me realize that no matter how badly treated you are, you should never forget the kindness you’ve been showered let alone hold a grudge against someone. Will angered me for he’s such an arrogant jerk and abusive. Nevertheless, he was the one who protected Mary from those convicts who tried to rape her, married her, took care of her and her child without questioning who’s the father of the baby, built a decent hut for them to stay in, and worked to feed them with tolerable meals in arid New South Wales. Oh Mary, if only I could be as optimistic as you. You’ve found true love under odd circumstances. Love is indeed beyond having romantic relationship with someone.

Mary, Will, their children and friends were the first convicts to escape from Sydney Bay, truly thanks to Mary’s brilliant idea. It was because of her intelligence and careful planning that they managed to escape the ruthless officers and troops. With a small boat and minimal provisions, they set out to sea. Days on voyage without knowing when they will reach the destination and when hope was almost lost among them, she raised their spirits. I couldn’t be able to gather courage and yell at them to battle on if I were her. Sincerely, I learnt a lot from reading this story. In my life, I retaliate when I’m being misunderstood, frequently fail to control my emotions. I fight with my fiancé just because I have high hope of him to comprehend me but it’s not alright. Not right at all. He has sacrificed a great deal for me and still is, pampers me with love and protection. Mary makes me ask myself, with so much of passion and kindness my fiancé spoils me, why would I nag and complain about mistakes he unintentionally do?(less)

Este livro deve ser o que tem a capa e o título mais errados. Porque esta capa e este título não tem nada a ver com a história que povoam aquelas páginas. Não foi só por isso que lhe atribui duas estrelas, mas contribuiu porque no fundo não era isto que estava à espera. If you're a lover of historial fiction, then don't hesitate. I don't often cry at books but the last third really moved me to tears.

Confesso que não conhecia a história desta fascinante personalidade, nem conhecia muitos detalhes sobre a colonização australiana e, talvez por isso, me tenha sentido tão fascinada com esta história e com uma vontade enorme de estudar melhor o tema que a autora retrata neste livro. Do pouco que sei, acho que o livro está fiel em periodização histórica e pormenores de época pois quantos relatos atrozes, tão parecidos a este, nos chegaram até hoje e nos surpreenderam pela mesma falta de humanidade, sede de poder e condições miseráveis? Em cada descrição, seja da viagem, da chegada ouda luta pela sobrevivência, o leitor vai-se arrepiar, fechar os olhos e sentir, senão ódio, pelo menos um desprezo profundo pelas condições sociais que resultam em tais actos de desespero e que levavam a que só o os mais fortes ou os bafejados pela sorte persistissem. Atrevo-me a dizer que esta leitura levará a que muitos pensem nas condições em que as várias colonizações foram feitas, na coragem dos homens, e não só, que partiam para o desconhecido e incendiará um orgulho nestas gentes que por si, obrigadas ou por vontade própria, construíram do nada, muitas vezes sem apoios, verdadeiras nações.
Quanto à caracterização das personagens é em Mary Broad que se centra toda a história e à volta da qual todas as personagens giram. O leitor terá muitas vezes a sensação que Mary é perfeita, um exemplo da sociedade, um modelo a seguir, uma vítima dos seus crimes e, tanta exaltação, da personagem tanto nos pode fazer admirá-la como a acharmos que a autora exagera nas qualidades da protagonista, o que pode enfadar o leitor durante a leitura. Na minha perspectiva, Lesley admira Mary e considera-a uma heroína, idealizando-a à imagem da sua protagonista típica, uma mulher de coragem, inteligente, apaixonada e práctica que não deixa de ter defeitos e da qual a autora não esconde os seus actos mais degradantes, criando simpatia e admiração por esta personagem, que cresce e ganha experiência ao longo da história, surpreendendo-nos muitas vezes, não pela sua perfeição, mas imperfeição.
Se Mary sobressaí claramente, as restantes personagens estão lá para exercer um papel no seu destino e falham na maioria das vezes por serem estereotipadas, faltando-lhes personalidade. Poucas são as personagens que nos conquistam como Mary ou a que a conseguem suprimir pois este livro é sobre ela, a sua vida e a sua história. Mas a autora consegue combater a debilidade das personagens com descrições fortes e uma narrativa envolvente que nos levam até ao outro lado mundo, a locais exóticos e perigosos onde a coragem é a única que nos pode salvar. Cheio de momentos dramáticos, capazes de provocar o maior dos desgostos, esta narrativa é uma aventura e uma lição de vida, que no meio da adversidade também é capaz da maior das purezas e dos actos mais doces.
Nunca Me Esqueças é um relato belo, surpreendente e tremendamente trágico de uma mulher de garra, de um mundo em mudança e do nascimento de um país. Aconselho a quem não tem medo de histórias tristes, a quem tem sempre uma réstia de esperança e a quem admira a mulher, a coragem e quem faz a diferença no mundo.

É um livro bom, antes de o ler pensava que não era o caso. this book is just amazing! I often find myself thinking of what would Mary do if she was in my situation. She was an incredible person that lived an incredible life, full of love, but mostly of loss and and dispair. Assim terminei mais um óptimo livro. Com uma história intensa e até chocante (especialmente tendo sempre em mente que é verídica) que és capaz de deixar uma pessoa um pouco mais sentimental. Para quem gosta de romances, assim como alguns factos históricos, é uma excelente aposta. I loved this amazing historical fiction by Lesley Pearce. An excellent British writer I discovered recently, her historical fictions are a joy to read. In this one, Pearse takes us to the first colony on Australia with the character of Mary Broad. Em relação a este livro, começo por dizer que, na minha opinião, a sinopse não é um retrato fiel da história que ele contém. Aliás, tanto a sinopse como a capa (da qual gosto) dão a ideia - pelo menos a mim deram - de que estamos na presença de um romance cor-de-rosa, que por acaso até se passa numa altura conturbada da história da Inglaterra.

I'm always slightly cynical with historical fiction written from facts, it can either be drier than Gandhi's flip flop or over embellished beyond recognition.

This was neither, Pearse kept a decent balance and lets you come to know each character without letting you forget this is a true story.

I know a lot of the places in the book personally and she made me see them in a different light. I cried for the characters and laughed with them too! If you love historical fiction this is a must read no...more

This is one of my all time favourite books. Love, heartache, despair, hope, this book has it all. The way Leslie Pearse writes is so vivid and amazing, each one of her books hooks you from the start and this one will pull at your every emotion, it's just utterly brilliant.
Follow Mary on her journey from London to the Colonies, feel what she is feeling and see what she is seeing even hear the creak of the boards and slam of the doors, it's just brilliantly written and I can't recommend it enough.

I read this book a couple of months ago. Now, I have a dreadful memory and normally forget about a book as soon as I've finished the next one, but this one has stuck in my mind as one to recommend to all. It is based on the true story of a woman convict called Mary, who is put on one of the first fleets to Australia. She has to go through so much to survive and even now I still feel moved by her plight. It puts my everyday problems into perspective that's for sure.

On her journeys, Mary takes care of everyone around her. It didn't take long for me to get annoyed by her "too good to be true" behavior. Ao contrário de outros livros da autora este livro é baseado na história verídica de Mary Broad. Gostei principalmente da personagem principal, da sua personalidade e da forma como é retratada no livro. Este romance como é passado no seculo XVIII leva-nos a uma outra realidade, dá-nos uma perspectiva sobre como funcionavam as coisas noutros tempos. E, para além disso, este romance têm em si uma história que nos prende pelas realidades que retrata.

Um livro bastante bom, que narra a história verídica de Mary Bryant, uma jovem que após sair de casa dos pais, irá dar-se com "más companhias", até que é apanhada a roubar um chapéu, é presa e condenada a viver para a Austrália, que irá ser tudo menos um mar de rosas.

Adorei este livro, embora muitas vezes fuja a histórias um pouco tristes (especialmente se forem verídicas), valeu a pena por ser uma sobretudo uma história de coragem.

This was an interesting and informative read, based on the true story of Mary Broad. I found it intriguing and was amazed at the courage Mary had during her struggles. The author stuck very close to the facts, but in my opinion the book could have done with a bit more fiction. At times I found it quite hard to connect with the characters, possibly because they were too realistically flawed - which i suppose for some would be a good thing! But overall it was a good read.

Adorei! Que livro lindo! Impressiona mais por saber que é baseado numa história verídica.
A sinopse leva-nos a pensar que se trata de mais um romance cor-de-rosa mas não o é definitivamente.
Este livro só nos demonstra que a força e determinação nos levam sempre onde queremos e que a inteligência e integridade de carácter se sobrepõem à beleza física.

It's a nice book. Very dramatic, a touch of love,a sprinkle of adventure, sadness, happiness..It's all in there. I rarely read books like this one but by the end of the book I felt I had power again as a woman. Very inspiring book to say the least. Something to read when you are feeling weak and in need of some drive as a woman. I shall definitely remember it.

I read this about 5 years ago and I still think of it fondly, Mary's struggles have definitely stayed with me! Based on true accounts, tis a very moving historical story. Of the books I have read so far this has inspired me the most. I want to read it again some day but so many other exciting books to read prevents me from doing so. I would recommend!

I decided to put it aside because there's just so many times you can read that the character was cleaner, more intelligent and so much better than anybody else. It was so repetitive that the action suffered a bit and couldn't keep me interested. It had potential, I did enjoyed to read about the colonization of Australia, I think I've never read fiction that dwelt on the subject, but it gets so little attention that it was a bit frustrating.

I have never read any of her books before and I am so glad someone sent this to me. The story captivated me right from the start. I felt like i went on a journey with Mary through all her ups and downs. Mary was the strongest woman i have come across yet, as this is a true story. I cannot wait to read more books from this author.

Shelves: epic-novels, historical-fiction

I really enjoyed this story. It was engaging and kept me turning the pages to find out what happened next. It is amazing to realize how harshly these prisoners were treated for what we would consider misdemeanors today. The author brought to life the conditions they endured and I found the overall historical account was very interesting.

Um excelente livro!
Muito triste, sem dúvida, uma história dificil, dura e cruel, que acaba bem, mas longe do que seria de esperar, depois de tudo o que a Mary passou. O que mais custa, é sabermos que é um livro baseado numa história real que, ao pesquisarmos na net, encontramos tal e qual nos piores acontecimentos do livro.
