I don't know how to read. I'm going to sign up for hooked on phonics after I write this review. My mind was in the gutter like I lost to Jesus Quintana and his purple balls in a bowling match (we have dates on wednesdays and saturdays now). My first reading today (I'm not a freak! This story is only 74 pages) the relationship was between a son and his mother. In my defense, kind jury (I really like those shoes! They match your understanding eyes), extramarital affairs aren't that shocking, are t More...

This is one of Inoue's first works, one of those that won him the Akutagawa prize and rocketed him to fame. Though less than perfectly done (who has ever done a perfect first novel?), it has a depth that shines through in the first couple of chapters, and peters out by the end.

The story isn't about A Hunting Gun, really, despite the title. The opening is written by a poet who writes a poem called The Hunting Gun, and the man who responds to him in writing because he recognizes himsel More...

This short story has complicated storyline, male narrator, other man - main hero, then letter of the three women from his life, but never mind, it is O.K.
But the letters! They are so hysterical, pathetic and silly... These are not women, but fairies, hags or aliens. :o) The first of them is twenty, but I thought at first about her that she is about ten! She has childish behaviour, but with some strange and certainly not female erotica (also, she is virginal "lolita" for male dre More...

This was a beautiful little book that took me by surprise. It is poetry in prose form... touching and sad.

A man is seen walking up a mountain with a pipe in his mouth and a gun strapped across his back. He is seen by the narrator as the personification of loneliness and writes a short poem about him that's published in a hunting magazine. The man recognizes himself in the poem and mails the narrator 3 letters to explain his cloak of emptiness and possibly share his burdens... and the More...

Beautifully written but I found the correspondence from the three women irritated me. I just couldn't identify with them and found them pale imitations of real people.

I loved this one. The smallest incidents take on huge meaning. Interesting characters / points of view. A real quick read that goes well between longer reads.

Not my cup of tea. Preferred Banana Yoshimoto.

However, this is quite an exceptional short book, containing 3 love letters addressed to a man.

More...

Inoue-san has a very good way in delivering this love affair story. He begun the story by putting himself as the main character who received three letters (if I am not mistaken) from three people who involved in one love affair.

By reading the letters, Inoue-san drives us to think that those three are the main characters. But, in the end, he came again as the central of story.

I fell in love with how the writer involved himself in this story. :D

This short story is well written. I liked the way it's constructed. Events are told from the perspective of 3 women. Each perspective enriches the previous one and the reader put the whole story together.

Un petit bijou: une histoire d'amour de cette envergure en si peu de pages, c'est la simplicité de ce livre qui fait sa force.
La quasi-perfection.
