A collection of interviews and recorded conversations with John Cheever,
re-printed in chronological order from a variety of newspapers, magazines, and literary journals from 1945 to 1980. It's fascinating to see how he deals with an assortment of interlocutors; each one trying in vain to make him reveal the secret of writing fiction.

It's not his business to understand where stories come from or what they mean, is what he says, over and over again in a variety of ways.

You can track the trajectory
For an edited book, many of the conversations were repetitive. I think Cheever speaks loudest in his stories with the characters that show us what we might pass over.
