After solving the matter of the radiant boy (in Radiance), Riley, her dog, Buttercup and her guide Bodhi are enjoying a well deserved vacation on a beach, but not the kind of beach with the sun on your face; a beach that is foggy, cold and a little big spooky. Riley was playing with Buttercup but then the dog ran off. Riley followed after him when a ginormous black dog came crashing into her. Riley wanted to know why the black dog came crashing into her so she followed the dog to a graveyard wh...more

Oh gosh! I loved Shimmer! It was so cool! I had no idea, how the problem would've been solved! I never would have though of that! That girl is insane! I mean, can't she be a bit more open minded?! Well I get that she's mad but really?! Did she have to be so mean to all of those people?! It's insane! They were trapped and had to live their greatest nightmares over and over for who knows how many years?! It just really angers me.
Riley is super cool. And she overcame the situation again. However, s...more

Shimmer was an okay sequel to Radiance. I think I liked Radiance better though. Shimmer started off kind of slow and boring. It took about fifty pages before I really got into it(for page counters that's a third of the book). Riley has matured a bit more than the first book. We get more of a glimpse into her life when she was still alive. I was also excited to be able to learn Bahdi's story. The book finally gave a lot of information about him. There were a few plot holes and spelling errors. Wh...more

On a well-deserved 'vacation', Riley runs into a vicious black dog and she is convinced that she should help the dog cross over. However, she herself crosses over - into a place controlled by the whims of another ghost. Rebecca seems sweet, but she lives off of fear, hatred, and other strong 'negative' emotions. Now Riley's got to figure out how to bring Rebecca to the soul bridge without losing herself, Bodhi, and Buttercup - as well as the many ghosts already trapped by Rebecca - along the way...more

Despite the infinite manifesting possibilities of the Here & Now, something about it just wasn’t the same. Sure, you could replicate similar sensations, the way the tiny, pebbly grains wedged between your toes, the way the cool ocean spray felt upon your face, but still, it didn’t quite cut it. Page: 3

I have to say that I love the Riley series even more than the immortal series; actually that isn’t entirely true, I don't mind the first two but after that it went downhill in my opinion and be...more

I remember the first in this series very well, and I enjoyed the first in the series a lot. Now, first books, in most cases, are generally the best, and the following are not as good, but I can tell you for a fact, this Book is even better than Radiance, and that's saying something.

The books picks up with Bodhi and Riley on Vacation, like they said they would be at the end of Radiance. The beginning is actually exactly how a book should be started, fast and instantly grips you. I enjoyed this al...more

Riley is 12 (eternally) she died in a car crash with her parents and after hanging around the earth plane for a while with Ever, she moved on. Now in the 'here and now' she has a job. She is a 'Soul-catcher'. Her job is to persuade other ghosts and spirits to move on.
In book 1 she tackled a group of ghosts that no one else could handle. Now she is basking in her glow (literally - ghosts glow when they complete a goal - do something good). Sent for a short vacation with her spirit guide Bodhi the...more

For such a small novel, author Alyson Noel managed to pack a punch! A suspenseful story wrapped in history and empathy, Alyson Noel proves a good story isn’t about length but quality.

Riley is just as sarcastic as ever! She is rash, stubborn, and hardheaded. She tends to act against better judgment and tends to make a lot of mistakes before she gets something right. She is just like any normal twelve year old . . . er . . . except for the fact that she is dead. Riley grows a lot in this novel. Sh...more

After reading and enjoying the first book in this series titled Radiance, I couldn't wait to see what the author would come up next for Riley! I think these books are perfect for the younger teens, but as an adult, I enjoyed the series so far as well.

This time around, Riley finds herself trying to help an angry ghost named Rebecca. Rebecca is angry about being murdered and is taking it out on other ghosts. Riley needs to convince her that she needs to forgive and let go.

While this was a cute and...more

Wow, I am totally blown away by how much Alyson Noel packed into one slim novel! There is a moral and history lesson in an easy to read story. Empathy is probably something most kids around 12 are lacking and Riley is short on this trait, like most 12 year olds. As Riley freely admits she is willful, stubborn and acts rashly. After earning her glow in Radiance, she is granted a vacation with Bodhi and chooses to go to an island her parents had described often. There she comes upon Rebecca, a sou...more

This book ended on the worst cliffhanger and I cannot wait to get the sequel in the Fall. Wish it wasn't such a long wait!

This book I thought was better than the first, because Riley and Bodhi are even more established. We get to see more of who Bodhi was when he was alive, though not much. I wonder if he will ever face Nicole and speak with her. Also, seeing what horrible moment Buttercup lived through was so sad. I never really gave thought to how animals feel when they are taken away from th...more

It's hard not to fall in love with Riley and think of her as kid sister. She's defiant, strong willed and is on a mission to help those who are in need of assistance in crossing over. With Bodhi and Buttercup by her side, Riley finds herself in her toughest mission yet, though it's not really mission since she's on vacation when she stumbles upon Rebecca.

Despite Bodhi's warning, Riley soon finds herself face to face with Rebecca, an evil spirit who takes delight in trapping the spirits of those...more

Shimmer is the second book in the Riley Bloom series. She goes on vacation but ends up trying to help a soul cross over to Here and Now.
The theme is evil. "I was trapped. Held hostage in a classroom full of giggling, mocking, sneering students..." (Noel, 34) Rebecca had tourtured Riley by making her relive her worst nightmare, where she didn't fit in. One of the ideas is trusting others. "You're the only one left and now it's time to come out." (Noel, 153) Rebecca's dad tells her to wait in th...more

Shimmer is the second in the Riley Bloom series and continues the adventures of dead girl and teenager wannabe, Riley Bloom.

The story is set shortly after the events of Radiance and whilst it's not really necessary to have read that, it'd help in purely in terms of backgrounds for the characters involved here.

Having earned themselves a 'vacay' as Riley puts it, she and her not-so-faithful dog Buttercup and Bodhi are on an idyllic island where her parents went on their honeymoon. However, it soon...more

When Riley can’t keep out of trouble on a well-earned va-cay and stumbles upon a lost soul, she feels the urge to make that soul cross the bridge to the afterlife. Her spunkiness and headstrong nature cause her to get into a sticky situation. When her guide, Bodhi and her dog, Buttercup come to help but instead get trapped she has to go on a daring adventure to learn the true meaning of forgiveness and save her friends.

In my opinion the book S...more

This is the second book in the Riley Bloom series and boy oh boy does Riley know how to get herself into trouble. But this spunky twelve-year-old soul doesn't mind breaking the rules in order to bring a miserable angry ghost who is holding numerous souls in a hell she created to the Here and Now. Rebecca tortures souls, forcing them to replay over and over again the worst moments of their lives - as slaves on a plantation in St. James back in 1722 when they revolted and killed her and her father...more

Seri ini ada kemajuan. Setidaknya ga datar banget. Dr tengah buku smpe tamat, ak ga bs berhenti baca.

Alyson Noël continues Riley's story (begun in Radiance) with Shimmer (Scholastic 2011). Riley may accept that she is dead and must let go of her life on earth to complete the tasks set before her by the Council, but she is still headstrong and impulsive. This time while vacationing on one of the Virgin Islands with her dog Buttercup and guide Bodhi, she impetuously decides to help a ghost cross over without waiting for an official assignment. Rebecca, though, may be more ghost than Riley can han...more

Review from my blog Much Loved Books-Review of Shimmer

I really like Alyson Noels writing but when I read Radiance, the previous book to Shimmer I didn't really like it. I don't know if it was because I was expecting it to be more like The Immortals Series or not.

Surprisingly I really liked Shimmer. I think that since a lot of the back story has already been covered in Radiance, it left it open for Shimmer to be more of a book in itself.

I love Riley, and although I was never like that to my older...more

This second book in the Riley Bloom series was almost better than the first one...almost. While on vaca Bodie, Riley, and Buttercup run into a angry ghost named Rebecca who was killed by the slaves on her fathers plantation at the age of 13. In her overwhelming rage she creates a world of torture for all of those she deems unworthy to move on. In this world they feed off their own feelings of negativity and they re-live all their horrible memories.
When Riley stumbles on to her and her hell beas...more
