Hill 488
For some, Hill 488 was just another landmark in the jungles of Vietnam. For the eighteen men of Charlie Company, it was a last stand. This is the stirring combat memoir written by Ray Hildreth, one of the unit's survivors.
On June 13, 1966, men of the 1st Recon Battalion, 1st Marine Division were stationed on Hill 488. Before the week was over, they would fight the b

This is a story about a platoon of marines deployed in Vietnam. The main character and the writer is named Ray Hildreth. He is from Tulsa Oklahoma and was forced to join the marines or receive jail time. He had wanted to join the Marines his entire life, but he was eventually sent to Vietnam. On his way there he was offered a chance to join the Marine Recon Unit. He did and when he arrived into Vietnam he meets up with the rest of his unit and goes on a series of missions that led up to his fina...more
This is a Viet Nam era read. It flows like a good novel about a young high school athlete who has unsavory friends. When he ends up in jail, his dad lets him "stew in his own juice" for a while. While inside, he comes to the realization that the only way to become the man his dad would be proud of, is to join the Marines. If anyone wants to know what it feels like to be a teenager facing war, this book captures the intensity, fear, courage and grit. It so captured me, I was almost afraid to read the real battle sequence; afraid to lose my new friends; afraid to feel the realities of mortal combat. My step-dad is a Marine who served 2 tours in Vietnam as well as Korea. This book helps me understand the kind of things he's seen. Courage under fire. I'm so proud of our military. (he was good friends with SGT How...more
One of the most intense first person accounts of small unit action in Vietnam I've ever read. There isn't really much more to say about this book - it is a direct and brutally honest tale about one of many such engagements that took place during Vietnam war. If you're interested in the topic it will be fascinating read, if not, then this book is not for you.
A very good read. Fact paced. A classic example, of a small USMC recon team beating back an attack by an NVA battalion.
Such detail and the courage of the men - why didn't we just hold onto the land that we conquered?
