First published in 1982 'The Darkangel' by Meredith Ann Pierce is the first in the Darkangel trilogy. The series is being reissued by Little, Brown & Company with gorgeous new covers. I have to admit that the cover is what first caught my eye. But I was lucky that it wasn’t just another pretty face, what I found within the pages is a solid young adult fantasy worth reading more than once.

The Darkangel, once a mortal and not quite a vampire, must have 14 brides before he can come into ...more

I think I enjoy adventure. And with this story having elements so surprising, I am caught in it to find out more how it will come to an end. It opens up wonderfully; in that there is detail to mimic the lead role of Aeriel, who is in a plight unaware it may me everything to her, even bring her such as her own death. Aeriel carries the story throughout thinking that she needs to shield Eoduin even though she is played the maid servant, and Eoduin is lost now, a victim as a bride to a definite evi...more

I picked this book up at Barnes&Noble last night because it stands out in my memory as a book I loved when I first read it in the seventh grade. Indeed, ten years later, it is still an enjoyable read.

Surprisingly, what I most enjoyed about this book is the author's detailed and beautiful description of the landscape and creatures of Solstar, the fantasy world in which this story takes place. The land and the beings that reside in it are familiar, and yet different and quite unique. I fou...more

This book is a triumph of descriptive writing. The way Meredith Anne Pierce describes every detail of how a mushroom tastes for example "sweeter than nutmeat and smoother than curd." It's simply beautiful. This love story is about a girl approaching adolescence who's best friend (and master) is kidnapped to be a dark angel's bride. A dark angel is a vampyre who rips out the hearts and drinks the blood and souls of the beautiful girls they choose for their brides. They also supposedly h...more

Read this when I was still in high school ... happened to find it walking through the book aisle in Walgreens and wasn't all that sure I'd like it, but immediately fell in love with it and with Pierce's storytelling and forshadowing. About two years later I was walking through the same store and found the second book in the trilogy, A Gathering of Gargoyles, and was downright jumping for joy. Devoured the book that night and was even more enthusiastic to read the continuation of this story in th...more

Found it by accident in the school library when I was twelve, while looking for books by another author with the same last name. Twelve years later, I still can not get over the scope of the author's imagination. These are definitely books that you can reread as an adult and not go "What was I thinking?" I'll be honest--this was a favorite over ten years ago, and now that I'm rereading it, it definitely still is. I really don't think I've found anything that can compare to it in recent...more

The Darkangel, a winged creature that is reeking havoc in its world, is on the lookout for another wife. His thirteenth, in fact. And Aeriel, a lowly village servant girl, is there to witness the kidnapping.
Her mistress is taken abruptly by the Darkangel, as is Aeriel who means to kill the Darkangel (and falls under his spell instead).
The Darkangel takes Aeriel to his castle, where she is to serve the thirteen souless wraiths (wives), who insist that Aeriel MUST kill the Darkangel when he ta...more

I read this in 1982 when it was first released, and the second volume in 1985. The third installment of the trilogy came out in 1990, and I completely missed it. I saved the first two, and when I was going through old books a few years ago, I picked up a copy of the third volume so I could finally finish it. Sure, it's geared toward adolescent girls, but the trilogy is an enjoyable, and quick read-it would be great to have on hand if you were home sick or something. I thought of it because e...more

I have to wonder now if I loved this book because I read it in high school (and reread, and reread, and reread). I borrowed somebody else's copy of the book club edition of the trilogy so often that they finally just gave it to me.

I was drawn in my the happy ending of the first story, but then the author takes it so much further in the second book, and then even further in the third; not your typical story. I was always amazed by the foundations the author built in the first book that suppo...more

I just re-read this one. It's just as good as I remember it. The writer has a unique style that is almost poetic, and the story is so original and creative with characters that feel mythological. It has a fairy-tale quality, I love it. Highly recommend it to anyone who likes fantasy even a little (and I don't mean the cheesy kind with million characters with weird names to remember and a map of a made-up continent in the front of the book--I can't stomach that sort:)~

This is another trilogy ...more

This was a quicker read than I thought it would be, once I picked it up. I'd never read anything by this author so I was pleaseantly surprised. I loved the writing and the world the author described, the main character was easy to identify with and you could feel for her, both her pain and her fears and her hopes.

The time-measuring in the book completely threw me for a loop though, because even though I thought each day-month was a month for us, there was a moment in the book when four dawns w...more

This is a book that sounds cliche and unappealing when you try to describe it's subject or plot. The reality of it is graceful and has the quality of a fairytale however. The sci-fi aspect (setting) is integrated with subtlety as opposed to tacked on, and the main character is neither cowering or feisty. She is a fairytale heroine. She does what must be done, treats others with care and and respect, but is secondary to the story and her destiny, more than looming larger than life. It's a sur...more

I LOVED this series. It is so captivating and spell binding with it's intense storylines and equally amazing characters. The detail is immaculate and you can relate to the scared feelings of the main character,Aeriel. She must chose between destroying her horrible vampire master, or trying to save him from the spell that has twisted him into his current state. Underneath it all it is a story of truth, love, friendship, and making choices for the better. All three books are amazingly written and ...more

This book creates it's own usually of time/days, and how they idtenfy it which confused me ENDLESSLY throughout the book. I found that my attention just wandered. I kept reading, but there was always something missing from the book...I kept wanted my protagonist to be stronger to not have the supporting characters always tell her what to do. I don't know I just didn't care enough about the protagonist...and can I say confusing AGAIN. Lots of rules to her rule that were never spelled out and ...more

I was looking for something else when I found this book, and the cover pulled me in. Take a look at the hardback cover art, it's amazing!
And then, the world that Meredith Ann Pierce creating was so different, it read like a fantasy, but then I realized it was actually SF, set in the far future. Very cool.
I liked Aeriel and her brave attempt to avenge Eoduin, which becomes a much bigger quest to save the Darkangel himself. I was captivated, and I still am.

The Darkangel trilogy is powerful. Meredith Pierce creates a wonderful world that is mythic, poetic, grim but hopeful. The characters are also fully developed, growing and changing in ways that challenge the reader. This is an overlooked masterpiece in science fiction and fantasy in my opinion.
I only recommend this to experienced readers because Pierce just plops you right into her world with very little explanation. Though part of the fun is putting together all the pieces, this can be ...more

This tale is part fantasy, part paranormal, and all GOTHIC! There's lots of unrequited love and unanswered questions. This is the first in a trilogy and only partly fulfilling. I guess I’ll have to read the next to see if it all turns out well for Aeriel & the prince.

Pierces’ world building has lots of whole in, but I’m sure she couldn’t convey all details in the 200 page book. I wonder why she cut it out? Would the details be too minuscule? Probably, but I’m still curiou

I read this trilogy out of order when I was in junior high. Later, I went back and read it as you should...it is a really well-written and unique storyline. It is also a tad disappointing at the end (not necessarily for what happens at the end, but for the rushed manner in which it is delivered). This first book as well as A Gathering of Gargoyles are both top notch young adult fantasy, and the third installment does tie everything up nicely enough.

This is my favorite book. I constantly go back and forth whether I like The Game of Sunken Places or this book more, right now it's this book's turn. I enjoyed the trilogy, but when I think of them I honestly think of them as different books. I LOOOOVED the first one (this one). I liked the second. And I hated the third (actually I loved it too, but I thought the ending was such bs I can't help hating it D:)

I read this during my 7th grade year. Drawn by the cover (which is different than the one shown) instantly. This was my first ever YA Fantasy genre book. The world that Mrs. Pierce created was a spectacular one and very vivid. Aeriel trumps as a heroine and as a woman in love. The series did not end the way I would have wanted but it was a great series nonetheless.
