Sandi Rog writes an interesting and original story set in the first century. The two main characters are energetic young people who become close friends - one the master's granddaughter, the other the master's slave.

Young David was sold as a slave at the age of 10. He's the son of Hebrews who believed in Yahshua and because of their faith they were killed. In the first century Christians were awfully persecuted. David kept the faith of his parents and starts telling other slaves about his God an...more

The Master's Wall

Historicals are a favorite of mine and I have been drawn to biblical fiction in the past year. Sandi Rog does an excellent job of describing the setting in which the book takes place. In The Master's Wall you meet the two main characters when they are young children. Some books do a great job of just giving you glimses of the characters past and that works out wonderfully for that book. I am so glad she started at the beginning of their story and worked her way through it. Each...more

I’m thankful to have received a review copy of this author’s powerful debut novel. Sandi Rog takes the reader on an amazing, colorful journey through history to the first century Rome, AD 76, a time when Christians risked their lives to meet together and share the gospel.

Sandi hooked me from the first page, “David tried not to cry, tried not to breathe or make a sound as he crept along the dark street… he followed the enemy. There were three of them. And they had taken his parents.”

I felt for yo...more

The Master's Wall is a delightful yet heart-gripping story of a young Hebrew slave, David, in the first century, and the love that grows from his boyhood for, Althea, the daughter of his cruel earthly master.

It's a story that satisfies the young teenage reader as well as the adult man or woman, nicely crossing the genre lines of youth fiction and adult Christian fiction. The fast paced and intriguing plot keeps you turning the pages from the start as David is intent on either escaping his enslav...more

"The Master's Wall" is a Christian historical romance novel. It's set in Rome from 76 AD to about 84 AD. The characters were complex and realistic, and I liked Alethea even though she was a spoiled child. (She's only 14 at the end of the book.) The romance didn't feel like a sure thing and had it's genuine struggles and problems. The Christian content was woven throughout the whole story and played a critical role in the story.

The setting was vividly described. While the historical detail was fa...more

The Master’s Wall is a masterfully woven tale of faith, loss and blooming love in Rome 76 AD. I don’t often read a lot of historical romance, but I’m glad I read this one. From page one you’re pulled into the story as we watch a young David bravely struggle against Roman soldiers as he tries to save his mother from their brutal attacks. Mrs. Rog deftly allows us to feel every emotion as the unthinkable happens right before David eyes. And from there his young life goes from bad to worse as he is...more

WOW! WOW, WOW!

What an amazing, inspiring beautiful story!
This novel is right alongside Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers — my all time favorite. Your heart will break for David and all he must endure as a slave to Romans and as a slave to His love for God and Alethea. Some of the scenes were so heart wrenching, and yet through it all he never loses his faith and devotion to God. I couldn't pull myself away from this book until the end. And up until the very end my heart was pounding...the tensio...more

Sandi Rog has written an action-packed story taking place in the First Century. She creates a fascinating look at both the slave and upper level Roman world, Christian and pagan. I really enjoyed the young slave's interaction with his new mentor and trainer, fellow slave, Titus, who teaches him to fight.
Rog makes it seem like she was really there in ancient Rome, detailing all kinds of fascinating everyday details (especially the food) sprinkled with references to politics and things going on in...more

Great debut book about the struggle for love and faith in ancient Rome. David is a young Hebrew of the sect of Christians when his parents are arrested before his eyes. He is sold into slavery to a cruel despotic master who controls the lives of all around him, while David strikes a friendship with his beautiful young granddaughter, Alethea.

Moving, sympathetic characters kept me invested in this story of survival, hope, and triumphing faith. A tender and at times passionate forbidden romance ev...more

Once I started reading The Master's Wall, I was hooked and frustrated when I had to lay it down to take care of real daily life. I loved how this book begins with the hero and heroine as children and how they grow up knowing each other as best friends and then their relationship transitions into the attraction of adulthood. It takes place in biblical Rome, a time when children were expected to grow up as young as twelve, thirteen and fourteen. By the end of the book, the heroine is only fourteen...more

There are so few books set during this time period that I was very excited when the author sent me her book to review! The last books that I adored from this time were Francine Rivers' Mark of the Lion series. There's something so exciting about the start of Christianity during the decadent Roman culture, a culture that reminds me much of today. Anyway, rarely does a book transport me back in time so intensely that I lose track of time and have to shake Roman dust from my shoulders throughout th...more

A slow building story with a very sweet ending. I love Christian fiction from the 1st century. I thought Sandi did a nice job depicting that era. I loved the main characters, Alethea and David. They had a strong connection from the beginning, with many trials and tribulations. Only God's love could make them whole. That same truth applies to us every day. I only wish the book would have had more at the end, after the struggles.
**And then I found out there is another book picking up where The Ma...more

This book was wonderful, and it led me on to read the second book in the series. Sandi Rog is one of the best authors writing in the Christian historical fiction genre. I found myself completely absorbed and unable to help myself. This is one of the best books I've ever read.

This is one of those books that grows on you. I'm reading it again! I love the storyline and the characters. It was a little hard to get into at first but by the second half I was sucked in! I'm loving biblical fiction right now, and this is a good one.

This is set in/near Rome around 80 AD which made the setting interesting! The main character is a young Hebrew boy who is taken as a slave. His struggles to survive, perhaps thrive and maintain (and share) his faith in the one true God make for a great story!

This was a delightful and exciting book to read. The author is a niece of Jeanee's (Phil's wife) so it made it very personal to read the book thinking about the author related to our family.

Well written historical fiction about the 1st century church and the sufferings endured by the church. I was drawn into the story and couldn't wait to learn of what happened to David.

I found this to be an amazingly realistic and well-written book with exceptionally well-drawn characters. It is wise not to start this one late at night because you may not be able to set it down until it is finished.

A well written tale of a Hebrew youth sold into slavery to be trained as a fighter.

A powerful story of love, betrayal, and redemption set in the epic world of first century Rome. Beautifully written with a lyrical prose that keeps you on the edge with its action and drama, this is Sandi Rog’s debut novel. Her lead characters, young Hebrew slave, David and spoiled, naive Roman, granddaughter of the master, Alethea, will capture your heart as you watch them grow up together. I fully recommend this book.

I enjoyed this historical fiction Christian book. I was drawn into the characters struggles and enjoyed reading how their story played out.

I'm an award-winning author and have been editing since 1999. I write children's books and hysterical--er--I mean, historical fiction for adults. After living in Holland for thirteen years, I'm now in Colorado with my husband and four children. I loved living in Europe with all its history: the ancient ruins of castles and Roman villas, seeing actual dungeons and gladiator arenas, and eating Roma...more
