This was just the perfect Valentine’s Day read. In the style of (The Notebook), a heartbreaker with flashbacks to the 2nd World War, religious undertones and a love story that knows no bounds.
Betty White starred in the Hallmark movie version of this which is how I first became aware of the story. I liked the book even better though, even if it did jump around a lot with different time periods and up to 10 POV's including some very minor secondary characters. The battle scenes from the Philippia...more

It was kind of like "The Notebook" it was such a sweet short story. There was a hallmark movie based off this book starring Betty White as Caroline Thomas (older) and Jennifer Love Hewitt as Susan. The movie as per usual took some allowances and changed some of the stuff from the book but it was really good. I liked the book a lot, this is the first book I have ever read by this particular author. He's kind of like a Nicholas Sparks and James Patterson (Suzanne's Diary For Nicholas) and maybe ev...more
I already saw the movie before I read the book. And what can I say, both made me teary-eyed :P
Though the story is quite similar to "The Notebook", I like it because they have part where they mentioned Philippines and they have Filipino guerrillas cast involved which made me think of reading more about the Pacific War during World War II. Kinda bias about my comment but I really like the story of the book. :)

This book was a waste of time. It's touted as a book of the same calliper as "The Notebook," but it is far from that. It's one of those books that you have to force yourself to finish. A good part of the book is a flashback to the second world war, but that part is the type of story that has been written about time and time again. The rest has no real substance.
This story gets you teary-eyed at some points, but the message of the story about love. The importance of love sounds like is nothing new, but the message is different this time. Is not only about finding someone to love, but is also about the thorns.
What I didn't like was that some parts were too corny for my taste, and I wish the author would've stayed more with reality by the end.

I'm a huge fan of Nicholas Sparks and was looking forward to a great book much like The Notebook but while it was a cute story and yes tears did come out at the end, I couldn't fully get into the story. Maybe it had to do with the fact that I saw the movie before reading the book but I felt that the story line of the movie was not only more realistic but also easier to read. Overall, I enjoyed the book and another nicely written story of eternal love.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It shows us that among all the caos and hatred in the world love still persits stands strong. The story captivates you in a way that I can't describe only that you wish you had a love story like they had.
Some parts were just tooo sweet, others hard to believe, but overall worth to read.

I can't say the last time, or if ever, that I finished a book and immediately wanted to read it again. I'm not even sure what to say, well I do but I'm going to have to bring out my cheesy side and say it kind of made me believe in love. To be specific the kind of love Caroline and Neil shared.
My only complaint: it could have done without the side story of Neil Jr. and Susan. While I liked the few moments it took us away from the main story, I just didn't get it's point. Other then telling the r...more

“Love is found when you don't have to give it. It is the emotion of generosity and kindness that is compelled by no one. It is performed on the battlefield, in our daily tasks, in the marketplace, the factories, at school, in the offices, and in the halls and corridors of government.... But only when one truly gives of himself and without compulsion.”

“So it is with life. Those thorns, the prickly problems of life, cause us to strive to rise above them and then, as we do, we learn. We learn to exercise true compassion, true kindness - or the thorns, if we let them, cause us to brood, to mourn over our trials. Then we plant the seeds of bitterness, hate, and ruin - weeds. We may reach up for the rose or down to the weeds...the weeds in life that tangle us, strangle us, and cause us to lose hope.”
