They get into all sorts of adventures, have sex, look for the real killer, have sex, get in trouble with the police, have sex, she lies to him, have sex, they get hurt, have sex…oh, and did I mention that they have sex? So, he takes her to his mansion (of course he’s rich) to ‘protect’ her. One of the pack is taken by coyotes (they are always the bad guys). The wolves all cram into their SUV (what, you expected them to change into wolves and run)? Anyway, they pack like Crown Prince sardines into the black Escalade like Dana White’s boys, while sharing Kleenex and listening to Clint Eastwood by Gorillaz (hey, if JR Ward can drop in weird, random pop culture references, so can I) to go rumble with the bad guys. While they are gone (it’s a trick, duh) the coyotes bust into the mansion where Sarah is all alone with Lucas’ brother Jordan (get your mind out of the gutter. I’ll let you know when you need to get in the gutter). She’s a tough chick, so she winds up saving the day (with just her mind and a piece of jagged glass). Lucas comes back to a torn up mansion. They later check out a murder at another one of his properties (he’s an Alpha of a rich pack in California, not a hillbilly pack in Alabama, you know).

The next day……After a good night’s sleep (get in the gutter now), they get ready for round two (or three, or four, or 200, I forget) of action. He is out of condoms, so he tells her that he can’t get her pregnant because she’s not his true-mate (cliché, or line to get more sex? If he hasn’t figured it out yet, she’s an easy lay) Sarah’s ex-bf Rafael (there is a Raphael/Rafael in nearly every PNR) who professes his deep love for her (and she has the scars to prove it) and wants to exchange the kidnapped pack member for her. Turns out he used her to keep up with what the wolves in his pack were thinking (sex and sports, is it that difficult? They are men). Sarah herself has been lying all along to Lucas and keeping many secrets, the biggest of which is that she is actually an undercover FBI agent (Paranormal Division). Rafe was actually an assignment. A fight breaks out, the bad guy shoots Lucas with a silver bullet (where’s Tonto?) where he lays dying of silver poisoning.

Segue into Voodoo part of story……One of the other wolves says “Hey, why don’t we take him to the voodoo priestess Marie? She can save him.” (a voodoo priestess in sunny California, how quaint). They take him to Marie, who is thin, black, old, and blind (cliché much?). When she demands payment, Sarah offers to trade her life for his. Marie binds their lives together, so that she dies if he dies (kinda gives her a good incentive to treat him right). Later on, Marie is murdered by the bad guy wolf, while Lucas and Sarah are back at the manse having sweaty, bloody sex (right after he nearly died, no shower, nothing). Lucas announces to his pack….wait for it…..drumroll, please…..that Sarah is his true-mate. One guy fights him over it, then they settle in like good boys and accept it. They don’t like that she can read their minds (oh, yeah; and control their minds while they are in wolf form). Lucas makes her ‘promise’ that she will stay out of everyone’s minds and not control their will (yes dear, with her fingers crossed behind her back). A woman hops over the wall and runs to them. Hey, it’s Maya the vampire cop from a previous book, (Immortal Danger) who was imprisoned by rogue vampires with Jordan, and now mated to Adam Brody (can you say plot device to connect the books?). She says Marie was murdered, and she smelled wolf all over her, so she naturally suspected Lucas. (cause, you know, all wolves smell alike).They need to get a special potion made to release a demon from (half wolf/half demon) Caleb, so they see Marie’s voodoo grand-daughter. She is downstairs in the basement at a bar (gotcha, the cliché is back room of the bar) doing voodoo yoga in a magic ring on the floor.

The rest of the book I really can’t make fun of, it’s just good, solid RS; and I don’t want to spoil this part, it’s the real meat of the story, and the story gets deeper. I was surprised to find out who it was Rafe was really killing. The story is fun all the way through, but takes off and flies about 1/3 of the way through, and really shines. I’m curious to know who is next up. Could be Dane and FBI agent Karen, or maybe Piers and Josette; although her dark voodoo kinda creeped me out.

…..…This was a little unusual of a book for me, it was really like two books in one with the same characters. The first part was a sexy, fun, fast-paced wolf shifter story; which segued into magical, voodoo stuff with shifters, Demons, and undercover FBI Agents in the story. Believe it or not, that’s when the story really took off. Kinda RS meets PNR, with hotter sex. Whatever, it worked for me. Anyone who has read Eden’s ‘Deadly’ Romantic Suspense series knows that’s where she really does her best writing. It really was an excellent story, even if the first part of it is easy to make fun of. Snark aside, I really enjoyed it. I stayed up half the night reading the book, glued to the pages. I do recommend the book……..

It’s really the 4th book of the ‘Night Watch’ series, but easily stands on its own. Maybe read ‘Immortal Danger’ first, it’s where the reader first meets Lucas and Maya; but it’s not necessary. And read Eden’s ‘Deadly’ contemp. RS series. It’s really good.

Set in the Night Watch world, but not a part of the series, Never Cry Wolf delivers! And how.

We met Lucas Simone in Eternal Hunter , and as the alpha of the L.A. pack, he is more than just a handsome face. In fact, he’s in jail being accused of murder when we first see him. A sexy and beautiful woman comes in and springs him from lock-up claiming he’d been with her all night, and couldn’t have committed the murder. While that is a great bit of luck for Lucas, he’s never met the woman.

And this does give it momentum but it also gives it a sprinting feeling, which is great if you like being rushed out of your books. Everything about the world comes across as sort of shallow whether it be dialogue or description. And I know that’s all in favor of resembling our world as much as possible but...

Let’s get to the characters. The book has a nice balance between yin and yang. I would be hard pressed to say if either of their voices really trumps the other. They’re both truly strong whether that be in the midst of sex or battle. The few times we are put into other character’s perspectives struck me as pretty blah. I mean I’m all in favor of giving a lot of character’s perspectives but if you’re going to do that you have to keep them balanced and developed and you have to feel like you’re not just being shown this to fill us in on what’s going on. I can really only think of one scene that is incredibly guilty of that, a scene putting us right in a villain’s head. These scenes can be cool if given the time to shine. To make such a villain, however small, quirky or “human”. Unfortunately, majority of the side characters fall to the wayside. Only members of Lucas’ wolf pack have any hope of coming out of the shadows, namely Dane and Piers. But keep in mind this is only because their morals are interesting to watch.

This would be one of the more sexually explicit books I’ve read. So let’s just say at the first mention of a particular body part, it lost a lot of its subtlety. I found the sex scenes embarrassing to read so that probably means they were a success. What I liked above all was the flavor of the world, the jackals and charmers and demons. I imagine it would look a lot like True Blood. I’m not sure, however, how apt that comparison is only having seen like three episodes myself.

Also the title is pretty good. In fact, it gives the book a lot of ambiguity which its interior kind of lacks. For that if I were being nice, I would raise an extra paw. (less)

Sarah is running from Rafael Santiago, an alpha from a different pack. Sarah has a bit of history with Rafael, one that ended on a bad note, you could say. And Rafe has the misconception that Sarah is his mate, but he is the one who placed the bounty on her head, and Rafe has more of an agenda that just seeking out Sarah, he’s also seeking his own vengeance against Lucas. And Sarah running to Lucas plays right into his scheme. Rafe has lots of players in his quest for revenge on Lucas, some even in unsuspecting places.

Sarah is a is a “Charmer”, someone who is able to communicate telepathically with animals. Each Charmer has one type of animal that they are able to communicate with, but there is something a bit more special about Sarah’s ability. Sarah has known from a very young age that she was different, and never truly feeling like she belonged, and this is the one thing she wants most. Sarah turns out to be quite the fighter, and willing to give everything for what she wants.

Lucas…. *sigh*, Where do I begin with this sexy beast of a man??? He’s definitely Alpha, he’s dominating, possessive, protective, loyal, honorable, and HAWT!! He’s had his share of bad hands dealt to him, Starting with the murder of his father when he was 10yrs old. His mother took off way before then, and he’s never really had anyone to care about him, except for his brother, that he only found out about when he was 16yrs old.

Lucas and Sarah are attracted to each other instantly, but it’s their journey, and secrets revealed, the building of trust, and willing to give everything, and give up everything for each other that makes their story so awesome. *sob*

Every character in this book had a purpose. From the wolf packs, to the coyotes, and
the humans, a vampire, a dragon, a fire wielding demon, and a voodoo priestess, they all had a role, and many of them had secrets revealed, and betrayal in their part. I had a lot of questions while reading this, but by the end, all was revealed. The plotting was tight , and I love how Eden has already set the stage for future books, everything was woven together nicely throughout the story. And Cynthia Eden can write a smexy scene to make your toes curl!! I’m really looking forward to the next installment in this series.

I wish I'd realized earlier that this was part of a series; I think I could've used a bit more background in the world. That said, I liked the world-building, with 'shifters as essentially a different (but partially compatible with human) species. I liked the magic system. The sparks between Sarah and Lucas are undeniable and the sex is ultra-steamy, but the whole bit that threw them together in the first place was a bit confusing to me (c.f. "more background," above).

The main love interests we...more I wish I'd realized earlier that this was part of a series; I think I could've used a bit more background in the world. That said, I liked the world-building, with 'shifters as essentially a different (but partially compatible with human) species. I liked the magic system. The sparks between Sarah and Lucas are undeniable and the sex is ultra-steamy, but the whole bit that threw them together in the first place was a bit confusing to me (c.f. "more background," above).

The main love interests were pretty well fleshed-out (particularly Lucas-- YUM), but not always believable. Despite their mutual trust problems, I wasn't really sold on the idea that Sarah had Issues about being among wolves. And Lucas's feeling that he "just trusted her" would have been more intriguing if he spent more time examining it, given all the reasons he had NOT to trust Sarah. (But hey, an Alpha, examining his feelings? Hah, I say!) The supporting characters get a little fleshing-out (I suspect there will be more in later books), but I would have liked to see more here, especially more about Marley and Caleb's motivations. (Marley, particularly, could have been a REALLY cool and mysterious and potentially sympathetic character, but she was sort of...cardboard.)

The plot didn't really hold any surprises-- girl in trouble goes to Big Bad Wolf to protect her from her evil plotty ex, they fall into passionate lust with one another, girl proves to have been hiding a number of secrets of her own that seriously complicates the relationship and jeopardizes their lives and the lives of Lucas's Pack. There are cameos by characters from previous books in the series (so I assume, from the mention of histories with these folks), and plenty of incredibly obvious hooks for future stories about the other wolves of Lucas's pack (to the point of annoyance, at times-- why not just stick a page ad for the next three volumes of the series in there, while you're at it?). The plot is FAST-- plenty of action, plenty of snarly battles and tension, so the plot holes (with one major exception) didn't bother me as much as they might have otherwise. The ending was predictable for anyone who's read supernatural/urban fantasy before.

What really bothered me about this one was the villain, opposing Alpha (and loony) Rafe. Yes, yes, powerful, angry, crafty, insane but cunning, big threat, I got all of that. What I *didn't* get was HOW this guy who's got a lot less experience than Lucas (and frankly, seems a lot more off his rocker and prone to insane rages) was able to plot all of this-- to the point of knowing EVERY SINGLE weakness of the protagonists at the very moment they developed them, and having backup plans for his backup plans' backups when things went awry. This guy knew far too much-- essentially, the author's level of knowledge-- and for all that, folded like a wet paper towel the moment his gun ran out of silver bullets. (And what's up with that, anyway? Why is he the ONLY one smart enough to bring a gun to a claw party, and NOT get it taken away from him?) Basically, he seemed to be created for the sole purpose of torturing her characters before she could give them their HEA, and thus had zero personality or character of his own. He would have been a lot more successful (and believable) if he'd had to work at his information-gathering a little harder (spying on them with binoculars? Oh PLEASE), if he didn't turn out to be the grand mastermind behind EVERYTHING that went bad in this book, and if the audience had known from the start why he had such a mad-on for Lucas-- because finding out as late as we did basically made it into a throwaway excuse for his insanity.

Overall, I liked the world and Lucas was pretty damn sexy, but the story just didn't hang together for me.

Really. Really. Blow-me-away-I-hate-waiting-for-the-next-one amazing.

This series is right up there with Dark Hunters, Demonica, Midnight Breeds..... really great stuff.

My top tier books have humor. Shelley Laurenston's Pack and Pride series, Chloe Neill's Chicagoland Vampire series, KMM's Fever series and Kresley Cole's Immortals after Dark. But this sits in that tier under those favorites. So it is definitely top ten.

I enjoyed this urban fantasy/paranormal story. Lucas is a strong hero who has weaknesses that aren't as hidden as he would like. It seems that everyone, including the heroine, is playing on them. The man/wolf is a sucker for a damsel in distress. The heroine is definitely "in distress." She is being chased by another werewolf who has enlisted a couple packs of coyotes to go after her too. This is not my first Cynthia Eden novel, nor will it be my last, but I will tell you if you’ve never read Cynthia, first shame on you, second you’ll have a great introduction to her fantastic writing with NEVER CRY WOLF. "Lucas Simone is not the kind of guy you mess with. He's big, he's strong, and his eyes hint at a wilder side most women can't handle. Of course, that's because his predatory instincts are no metaphor--he's a genuine Grade-A top-quality werewolf, tough enough to fight his way to dominance over the scariest pack on the West Coast. There's only one chink in his armor. Unlike most alpha dogs, Lucas has a reputation for protecting the weak and innocent.

Not much to say about this one. For the most part, I really enjoyed the story and characters. Sarah springs werewolf Alpha, Lucas Simone, out of jail as a hail mary pass. She's been on the run for months from another pack who is determined to kill her, so Lucas, with his reputation for helping the defenseless, is her last chance at survival.

Never Cry Wolf is a wonderful book and I think it is my favorite (and I liked them all) of the Night Watch series so far.

This is Lucas' story, who we met in the first book (Eternal Hunter). He is the alpha of the LA wolf pack and a very dangerous man who has fought for his rightful alpha place in life. He also has a weakness for the underdog and when a small woman comes to him for protection he finds her hard to resist.

Another great novel from Cynthia Eden. Never Cry Wolf is as enjoyable as all her other novels are. It had a little of everything including suspense, romance, action, mystery and HOT wolves. This book was fast paced and really hard to put down.

Although this could be a stand-alone book, I would suggest reading Immortal Danger first which will give you insight on some of the characters, who do come back.

Lucas is such a strong tough Alpha, who’s had to fight his way to not only become Alpha but keep his pack safe. He has some major trust issues because of past betrayals that led to his father’s death. But now he has his own pack and he’s willing to fight to keep them safe from Others wanting to destroy him. I loved, loved, loved Lucas. With everything he’s been through, Lucas doesn’t let it change his beliefs and willingness to do the right thing. He’s a good heart under such a rough exterior.

In comes Sarah, a mysterious Charmer who has so many secrets. She’s scared because she knows she’s being hunted and has a price on her head. Everyone is out for her and she turns to Lucas for help. Lucas is drawn to her from the beginning but doesn’t trust her. She keeps many secrets that can jeopardize both Lucas and his pack. I actually loved Sarah’s character. Even though I know she’s lying which is frustrating at times, she knows it won’t end well, yet she still fights to survive, and as she enters Lucas’ pack, we see a very vulnerable and sincere side of her.

She’s a great match for Lucas. Great chemistry between them in bed and out. You really do want to root for these two in the end.

Now for the secondary characters. Loved seeing Maya, Adam, Marie, Josette and of course Jordan again. In this novel we got to also meet Lucas’ pack – Dane, Piers and Caleb. Can’t wait to see future novels on the rest of the wolves.(less)

I've been meaning to read Cynthia Eden's books for quite some time. Her romantic suspense books come very highly recommended, but I haven't heard much about her paranormal series. I've been on a bit of a shifter binge lately, so Never Cry Wolf fit right in.

I have no idea why, but the pack came off a bit like a biker gang. It's likely the absence of women shifters in this story, but there doesn't seem to be any community here. And that's what I like about shifter books: the way packs have both an...more

I became totally immersed in this novel right away, finishing it in record time; I never wanted it to end. He is dark, sexy, aggressive, protective, smart, possessive and all ALPHA. He had a rough upbringing but despite all of those difficulties, or most likely because of them, he has grown stronger and is the alpha of the L.A. werewolf pack and one of the most recognizable ones as well. Every Other knows that you don’t mess with the L.A. wolves. Sara was an admirable character as well. Having a stark upbringing where she first had to hide who she was and then fighting for survival on the streets, she later joins the F.B.I. but while undercover fell for the alpha wolf Rafael. After seeing the true monster under the handsome mask and realizing that he was only using her for rare abilities, she flees for her life hoping that Lucas can protect her. She is brave, intelligent and very determined. Once she finds Lucas she knows that he is the one for her but has a hard time trusting him with all her secrets. This was one point that I didn’t care for because no matter what Lucas found out about her, he still stuck by her side, so I thought that she should have been upfront with him the whole time. But I guess that would have made the novel a lot shorter, LoL. I liked how the whole story unraveled though and Eden kept me in suspense revealing each piece of the plot masterfully. She also has the wonderful ability to create such intriguing side characters that you become invested in them as well and want more of their story right away. The ending really captured my heart, it was beautifully written and one of my favorite endings ever. An alpha wolf, not knowing what love is, asking if these feelings are it. *sigh* So romantic…

First off, I would like to clear up some confusion. At least I was confused. “Never Cry Wolf” is not part of the Night Watch series, though it does take place in the same universe. It DOES occur after “Immortal Danger”, but doesn’t seem to be part of an actual series. Sarah King is not what she seems. At first glance she is all innocence and defenselessness. Sarah has many secrets and to save herself she can’t let them be known. Sarah has reasons to be scared. Her ex is after her and he has a hefty price on her head. Every supernatural wants to collect and she is in dire need of a protector. She knows the LA pack alpha has a reputation of protecting the innocent and that is what she is counting on.

Lucas Simone is alpha through and through. He will protect what is his and his pack. With a past born of pain and blood, he has zero tolerance of brutality of the weak and innocent. When Sarah comes into his life, he knows she is trouble at first site. Their relationship begins on a lie and that is something he will not stand for. His pack is in danger and he will do anything to protect them and Sarah is the key to do just that. He just needs to prove to her that she can trust him.

What these two find is not what they expected. They will need to learn to trust each other and that is not easy for either of them. The stakes are high and together they need to work together to survive. Problem is…they are surrounded by deception. Who can they trust? No one is who or what they seem. Through all of the chaos, Sarah and Lucas find something in each other, their missing pieces. Is the passion going to be enough, when one is lying to the other and the other knows it?

“Never Cry Wolf” is action packed from the start. Passion runs high and suspense and mystery is always lurking in the shadows. Ms. Eden has written a well developed story that keeps you guessing the whole way through. I am really enjoying all the different factions of her paranormal universe. She has developed a well laid out world that is consistent and extremely enjoyable. I hope to read more from Ms. Eden in the future.

A werewolf story with a plot... yaye! This is the first book I've read in the series but I found the world really easy to become aclimatised too.

Lucas is the biggest (in a lot of ways) and baddest wolf around and Sarah is in some deep trouble and certain that Lucas is the only one to keep her safe. Sarah knows his weakness, innocents who need protecting. She may not be quite so innocent but she can certainly play the part and she manipulates Lucas into protecting her.

I felt as if she expected him to risk his life and those of his pack but she was hesitant on giving him all the facts. This turned me off her character a bit.

Lucas witnessed his father's murder at an early age. Since then he's taken control of the most dangerous pack in LA and has earned his brutal reputation yet he still has a soft spot for the defenseless. Not that he considers Sarah as being weak but a woman in need of help. A woman his wolf wants to claim as his mate. Lucas isn't physically the most handsome man but his intense loyalty to his people, willingness to offer protection to those in need and rough edges made him a really good and unexpected hero. The relationship between these two isn't easy, which I think a large part is due to Sarah's habit of withholding information, but its what you'd expect in a shifter relationship: hot sex, dominate alpha, an initial denial of feelings, and a deadly ordeal the couple must get through in order to be together.

Another alpha fueled by revenge is out for Lucas' head and pack as well as Sarah for running to Lucas. What Lucas thought would be a simple removal of a challenger turns into a bloody battle and a betrayal he never saw coming. This part of the story was most interesting to me but things tended to get confusing and unnecessary when demons, different shifters and other paranormal creatures were introduced into the story. With each new character there was a back story to go with them and then it had to be explained how they were connected to Lucas or his pack. They often felt randomly placed and took away from the main story.

Despite its faults, Never Cry Wolf is a good paranormal romance read. Not my favorite work from Cynthia Eden but it managed to hold my interest with a lot of bloody action and a hero who had a grittiness to him I couldn't get enough of. The story was good but it could have been more enjoyable if all the nonessential characters would've been taken out as well as the plots twists that felt put in just to have have something unexpected happen.

Although this particular book is listed as #4 in the series, it really doesn't connect to the other 3 stories at all. But that didn't matter to me - I enjoyed it! There were a lot of players in this one and I got a little confused at one point trying to figure out who was bad and who was good. It was a strong storyline and then there's a possessive alpha male whose instinct is to protect the week...what's not to like?? I would love to get some more books about the other pack members from this on...more

I loved Lucas in Immortal Danger, and was pleased when I found out he had his own story to tell. I will admit to having a few fleeting moments, while reading Immortal Danger, of hoping Maya would end up with Lucas instead of Adam. Lucas is an awesome hero. VERY Alpha. Fearless, strong, smart, in control and loyal to the pack. A legend among werekind. So tender with Sarah, and so protective of her.

Very good book as usual from Cynthia Eden. I really enjoyed the characters and the plot of the book. She always knows when to bring the "shock" factor. LOL I enjoyed the interaction between the hero and his HEA.

Wow. This book was amazing. Even without reading any of the other books in the Night Watch series, I loved this book. Cynthia Eden has a way with words that sucks you in until you’ve read the whole book without taking a break. Now I’m going to go and hunt down the other books in the series because I’m curious if they are as good as this one.

Before the could even get away from the police station he was trying to find our her game. She needed his help and the protection of the pack cause she had a bounty on her head. She had secrets that could keep him alive cause a crazy hybrid werewolf was gunning for him. She knew because he was her ex Rafe, the one who had hurt her many time. While she is trying to explain to Lucas they are attack by coyotes and Lucas knew he had a treaty with the head of the coyote pack. He takes them out fast and he turns to Sarah wanting to know what the hell is going onl.

Sarah gets into Lucas's head and fast, the lust and need is felt by both. He wants her even though he knows he doesn't trust her, he knows she is holding out on what is going on. She's a charmer and the animal she links with is wolves. She can talk to them, but she can do much more than that she can control them. Lucas isn't sure he beleives her so he gives her a test, she has to read the mind of his pack mates. So the Dane, Piers, Caleb and Jordan are all test subjects and she nails it on the head. When they shift she knows everyone of their thoughts.

What Sarah hasn't told him yet is that Rafe isn't just after her for leaving him, he's after Lucas because he killed his father and he wants revenge. Thats why Sarah came was to warn him to watch his back. Lucas just doesn't understand why Sarah cares so much for him, why does she helping save is ass. Most people run from monsters and she ran to him.

Things get interesting fast. They have to fight coyotes and the other wolf pack. Rafe claims Sarah is his mate, but Lucas doesn't think so. As far as Lucas is concerned he want be getting anywhere near Sarah. She is sucking him in and he can't get enough of her. Even though she lies to him on several occasions, but she has saved his ass a few times and he can't over look that. They pack doesn't trust her and wants a pack trail and Lucas agrees. Sarah knows she will never survive and can't believe he is just he would turn on her when they just had sex. Lucas makes it clear fast if you want Sarah you have to go through him first. Know one will touch her, she's MINE! Now that he has claimed her infront of his pack she knows she is safe for now, they just need to kill Rafe and soon.

The attacks keep coming and betrayals happen in the pack and with Others that Lucas thought he could trust.

You have to kill to survive who will make it out alive.....

I love this book couldn't put it down. Ready for more! (less)

Not my favorite by her. I didn't like Sarah much, she had way too many secrets, even though she came to help to Lucas. I normally enjoy pack stories but I didn't like it much. Way too much action stuffed in, it seemed like reading an older book by her with character names changed.
We saw Maya and Brody again(the vampire and dragon) and it did seem to setup two stories with other pack members.

I bought this accidentally (lesson learned: double-check author's name) as an e-book and didn't realize my mistake until later. So, I read it anyway. I probably should have started with the first book in the series.
