There is NO WAY that I can properly pour props or otherwise do justice for this fantastic collection of witty, funny, informative and cleverly perceptive commentaries on life and its many absurdities.

Therefore, here is my list of 20 reasons to buy and read this book:

THE AWESOME "CRAPPY" LISTS:

As if we need more reasons to punch dolphins in the mouth.

A hilarious new coffee table book from a website called The Oatmeal.

Everything I need to know about life, I learned from this book:
(I swear to you, all this stuff is really in it.)

1) At the urinal: men groan, talk to each other about drywall and chainsaws, and then congratulate each other on a job well done. I guess the only witnesses are the clouds outside the window...

2) All those little clicks and whistles that dolphins make may sound...more

I don't know if I can stop laughing long enough to write this review!

Okay, so last week sometime Alyssa Milano posted on Twitter a thank you to The Oatmeal-the author of this book.

The next day, my friend wrote an awesomesauce review of this book http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/....

At that point I realized that I HAVE to read this book. So while I know I usually review romances, this was too good to pass up.

I think that there wasn't a page where...more

I love theoatmeal.com. Makes the long days stuck in cubicle hell much more bearable. If you've never heard of theoatmeal.com then you must be living under a rock. Fix this pronto.

As for this book? I would have to call it the most hilarious book I've read this year. Yay for The Oatmeal.

Here are 5 words about this book:
1) Hilarious
2) Awesome
3) Learny
4) Read
5) This

OK, so #4 and #5 are cheating, but still. And #3... well. Let's just say this ain't gonna be approved for use in classrooms any time soon... Or IS IT? O_O

I've been a fan of The Oatmeal for a while now, and seriously, some of the stuff Mickel Inderman comes up with makes me cry tears of laughter and gasp for air while I sound like an asthmatic something that wheezes for air. So of course, I had to read this. And since...more

I've been a big fan of "The Oatmeal" online comics ever since a friend sent me the links to the hilarious "How To Use a Semicolon" and "10 Words You Need to Stop Misspelling" comics. I loved the quirky combination of zany humor, rough sketching, useful factoids, and utter randomness that the site had on display, and quickly got hooked on the many and varied fun comics featured there.

I love printed compilations of online comic...more

Awesome book. So bad and yet the funniest book I have read in forever. Love it. Not for kids. Adult humor.

I'm a huge fan of The Oatmeal, as is everybody but certain Edison fanatics and litigious corporate attorneys. This first collection of comics taken from The Oatmeal website is a good composite of the first incarnation of what The Oatmeal is all about. However, Part of the charm of the website is the short comics that pop up every other week or so and give you a good chuckle. When bound together, the techniques seem to get fairly worn, fairly quickly. Also, what is included in this compilation is...more

Okay, I often don't talk about what format I read a book in. I read the epub version of 5 VERY GOOD REASONS TO PUNCH A DOLPHIN IN THE MOUTH, which is relevant because the resolution wasn't all that awesome. You couldn't really zoom, which meant some bits were almost impossible to read. Judging by the reviews on Amazon, that hasn't been fixed. So printed is the way to go. Not that I expect many people to be more interested in the e-version of this. It's easier to browse through the random comics...more

(Following is a dual review of 5 Very Good Reasons and You Might Be a Zombie)

Some internet memes are so viral, they make it all the way to the New York Times Bestseller list.

In the past few months, two separate compilations of the online funnies have made their way onto that venerable list, making one wonder if the guys at the NYT aren’t spending their lunch breaks surfing the web rather than perusing the shelves. Even more amazingly – given the past popularity of offerings like LOLcats-based I...more

Matthew Inman is a genius and The Oatmeal is his brainchild. As a child, I was never a fan of oatmeal, but it was better than cornmeal. Inman altered my reality with the magic of stinging pterodactyl laser piss in my eyes.

5 very good reasons to punch a dolphin in the mouth ( and other useful guides ) was a great read. There are a number of classic Oatmeal comics in this book, including “Why Nikola Tesla is the most awesome geek who ever lived”, “7 reasons to keep you Tyrannosaur off crack cocain...more

That...was...HILARIOUS!
I'm not famaliar with theoatmeal.com, but apparently, the person who runs that site wrote this book. It's essentially a bunch of one to four paged explanations of things like "5 Ways Mayonnaise can make your life marvelous", "6 Ways to Fight a Crack Whore" and "7 Reasons to Keep Your Tyrannosaur off Crack Cocaine." But they aren't all numbered lists like that. There are also things like a song by pterodactyl, "How a Web Design Goes Straight to Hell," and picture difference...more

There is something both horribly wrong and hilariously amazing about The Oatmeal. I've been following the site off and on for a while now, so I was really glad to pick up this book and see some of my favourite comics included, as well as some new ones.

The humour is so off colour at times, and yet right on the nose most of the time. If you're incredibly restrained or easily offended you probably won't like the humour in this book (or on the site), but if you have a sarcastic and sly sense of humo...more

First things first: if you've never been to theoatmeal.com, quit reading this review and GO THERE. I'll be here when you get back.

Addictive, isn't it? Well, that's this book. Inman has taken many popular Oatmeal infographic cartoons, as well as some previously unpublished material, and packaged them into a great little book for my reading pleasure. Complete with graphics about grammar, spelling, nostalgia, work, food, and life, there's something to make anyone laugh with each tu...more

Note: The review is based on a digital pre-publication review copy, provided via NetGalley by the publisher.

The awesomely-named 5 Very Good Reasons to Punch a Dolphin in the Mouth (And Other Useful Guides) is a collection of all the strips Matthew Inman – aka The Oatmeal – published at theoatmeal.com in the year after leaving his job as a web designer, along with 27 extra comics. While a lot of the content will therefore be familiar to fans of The Oatmeal already, I think having the strips avail...more

As with most collections of existing material, if you like content at theoatmeal.com, you will probably like this book. It is nice to have some of Inman's classic comics and lists in hard copy. That said, this book falls short in two ways: first, in terms of content, there is no added value; second, in terms of layout, a number of Oatmeal comics were originally created as a scrolling web page and so don't adapt well to being broken up into multiple printed pages. I am still glad we bought a sign...more

The only reason why I didn't give five stars to this book is because it looks pretty awful in the first Kindle edition. It gets really hard and blurry to read, so my first advice is: either buy the paperback version of this book or make sure you have a very recent version of Kindle. It should look better in a better-definition display.

Regarding the contents, this book is hilarious. If you follow up with The Oatmeal's posts, you won't see many news here. This books is a compilation of the funnies...more

I love The Oatmeal internet comic. That is why I bought the book -- I wanted to support whoever is behind these hysterical comics. However, in all honesty, I cannot recommend this book to anyone, except maybe the most hardcore fan of The Oatmeal. Maybe.

The material just doesn't translate well to the printed page. Part of it is that it is printed smaller and laid out across multiple pages instead of on a single, larger web page. Part of it is the inability to share it by forwarding it or posting...more

I chose this book, because I’ve seen it before at a store and I thought its title was pretty funny. I borrowed the book from a friend and decided to use it for my Goodreads review. The book is an anthology of various comics from the Oatmeal; a website created by the author of this book and is filled with mini comics and panels. Many of the comics are random beyond comprehension, having topics from potra-potties to dinosaurs on drugs. My favorite quote from the book is “Hamsters love 50 calibers....more

I seriously laughed my ass off several times while reading. I stumbled upon the website a couple days ago and obsessively read all of them. Then I found out there was a book and I had to reserve it at the library.

This book was just hilarious. It's full of rants, guides, and randomness. The drawings while simple are funny as hell. It's full of potty humor and pervertedness, but I loved it. Though, I wouldn't tell people to read it if they are sensitive or of a different sense of humor. It covere...more

Matt Inman's Oatmeal comic is alternates between being coffee-out-the-nose funny and "I see where he was going with that, but it just doesn't do anything for me" (e.g., the titular Dolphin strip). The humor is often bloody, disgusting, scatological, and frequently absurd, but also regularly imaginative and well-focused on stuff that bugs almost everyone. The worst strips make you want to sandpaper your brain. The best strips are the ones that you immediately want a mug, t-shirt, and wall poster...more

The Oatmeal's comics are always very funny, with a nice off-beat and somewhat surreal sense of humour, which means he can find the strangest of things to say about everyday (or not so everyday - what would you do if attacked by wild baboons when the only weapon to hand was a giant dildo?) events. And the fact that he can't really draw that well, he cleverly makes part of the joke, with his strange blocky people with spherical heads adding that final touch of lunacy to the strip. I like also that...more

Why would anyone punch a dolphin in the face? That’s the main reason why I bought this book. I need answers! Many many answers to stack in my answer box and hide it in my secret chamber. These answers will make me rule the world one day! Mark my words!

As always, The Oatmeal offers a great variety of comics that will make you fall off the chair, roll ten times on the carpet then probably suffer a heart attack and die. Yes, they’re THAT good. From Canadian pets to peeing like a champ, sucking at F...more

A trip to the Oatmeal earlier in the year to see Matthew's great comic about the allure of flashy Ipads that seem to be outdated before you're out of the parking lot, showed me an ad for this book. I told myself to read it, and that it may be funny, but I think I forgot about it.
I'm so glad I saw it on the shelf this week!!
Matthew's comics are hilarious and well drawn, but they are also extremely well thought out and in some cases quite practical. For instance, his infographic about the awesome...more

"This book contains gorillas, prostitution, poop jokes, small quantities of chainsaws, large quantities of man nipples, and one drug-addicted dinosaur. Its purpose is to entertain, inform, and offend.

I hope you like it. If not, I hope a large meteor finds its way across the universe and smashes directly into your crotch while you sleep."

I loved this book so much. I really do not even know where to start. The graphics in the book are beautiful. They look even better than they do online. The book also came with a pull out poster "Why I believe printers were sent from hell". I could not agree more. I have never met a printer I liked, even in the slightest. They are all a ginormous pain in the ass.

My favorite section of the book was "Why it's better to pretend you don't know anything about computers". This whole comic was a visual...more

So far I'm definitely taking off one star because my "Why I believe printers were sent from Hell to make our lives miserable" poster ripped at a corner when I tried removing it. I hate pull-out posters. Now the front cover is going to mock me forever with "LULZ PULL-OUT POSTER INSIDE!! This... is a phenomenal comfort book. A friend gave it to me as a "you'd like this" gift, and I keep it on my coffee table, where I pick it up when I need a giggle or two. It's the kind of book that I can open to a random page and find something I want to immediately quote to a friend via IM or gmail. Sometimes the satires are mindless, and other times they're funny (or sad) because it's true.

I wouldn't normally inform the fine people of Goodreads that I am reading something so silly, but this b...more
