An incredible epic full of passion, war, and lessons of love and humanity. Although it's fairly fast paced, I read about 250 pages of Book 1 (chapter 26 out of 48), but simply because of it enormity, I just had to put it aside and move onto something with a different style (sometimes I get bored easily). I have every intention of getting back to it, which is why I've moved it to my Put-aside (for now) shelf and I would recommend it to anyone who is remotely interested - and for those who are n...more

Recommends it for:
People interested in mythological or folk tales, in heroes and magic, in spiritual issues.

A magnificent, huge, complicated and intriguing tale. Or really a series of great stories, one after the other. I came to know and love the principal characters. They are all utterly distinct. This is, of course, one of the great national epics of India. But there was much to enjoy for this Jersey boy, too. The stories have real passion and drama, and the magical powers gained by the protagonists as well as their adversaries give them a feel of being superheroes. I really loved this book...more
Good book as far as myths and legends go, but I wanted to kick the idiot king who kept saying, "Well, if my son is misbehaving and his actions will cause a huge war, then it must be God's will and I can't do anything about it." Then he'd spend two pages after his son's idiot actions messed things up crying about how he should have done something.
This is a book every human should read.Krishna shares the highest philosophy with his friend Arjuna the great warrior.A masterpiece of the highest order the knowledge one receives through this book is astounding.
This is a wonderful re-rendering of the Indian epic and a great tool for understanding the original prose. You'll read it again and again... I did.

highly recomended...
I think i own this...
ultimate!!!!
Those who are not very much interested in reading epic, and have missed seeing the long 8 hours Mahabharata performance of Peter Brook on the stage, I think there is a version on DVD one can borrow from a liberary! If it's possible in Denmark, it will be also possible in some other countries, I assume. This is totaly different with Illiad or North European Epic, but quite unique in it's own way, ...
It was an epic epic. No kidding. It seems to flow fairly fast-paced; one moment some heirs are being born out of pots, and before you know it some villains are plotting to overthrow 'the kingdom'. Wild and fun, but pretty lengthy.
The back story to the Bhagavad Gita - the history of family feuding, political intrique, principles of virtue and much spiritual edification can be found in this epic text!
ah.... this is one of my favorite book ever.
A great translation of the longest epic poem ever written. It is also said,'What is not found in the Mahabharata, is not found anywhere else.' This i find to be true...
This book is crazy!
