The more Blaire is around this man, James, the less she finds she can resist him, and the more mysterious he seems.

This is really the first Regency vampire story I've ever read. I have read one story by Colleen Gleason in an anthology, but that was it. What I liked was that not only does it combine two of my favorite genres (Paranormal Romance and Historical Romance), but it also mixes in Scots as well! I just love a good Scottish accent and it's been awhile since I've read a story with one. It was a bit disappointing that Blaire was the Scot, and not James (he was English), but oh well.

But overall, I really enjoyed this book and I look forward to the next one. I liked both the main characters, they were quite likable and had unique and captivating personalities. I thought their relationship was well written and well developed as well. I also liked the side characters a lot, and I'm pretty happy to know that this is actually a spinoff (of sorts) series from the Westfield Wolves series, which I hadn't heard of before. So I will definitely be checking that series out, as well as the future books in this one.(less)

I absolutely love anything Regency, and when I read the summary for 'It Happened One Bite' I was very much looking forward to getting stuck into this Regency vampire tale.

The story opens with our heroine, Blaire's Mum casting a spell on the hero, James. A vision has forewarned that he will be a danger to her daughter and so like any good Mum she and her coven puts James into a cursed sleep.

Twenty years later, Blair is all grown up and after discovering a sleeping man in her brother's newly inherited castle, she awakens James from his magical slumber. Blair is a 'Battle Born' witch and whilse she thinks she can handle anyhting, this is one situation that might be over her head! But James is the perfect vampire gentleman and vows to protect her.

There is a mystery here, we find out James has had two vampires looking for him for many years, and the other mystery is why Blair's Mum imprisoned James into a slumber in the first place. We know it's because of a vision but we don't find out until the end.

The characters are very likeable, and their is a good strong chemistry between the two leads. Blair is very feisty, and can create fireballs from thin air - how cool is that?! James really is a gentleman, and his vampire side is really endearing rather than the stereotypical Alpha Vamps we know (and love) already.

I really enjoyed this, but the conclusions of the mysteries felt somewhat lacking. While it reads at a good pace, there were a couple of places that seemed to drag too. One of the main things for me though was while I really liked James, his friend that appears in here almost stole the show from him! But I do think when we come to read his book it will be brilliant! This was my first Lydia Dare romance, but I know it will not be my last because I enjoyed her writing and the whole story was very heartwarming.

VERDICT:

A romantic and endearing story. The characters journey is really lovely to read and to experience, and their love and romance is very heartwarming and gave me warm fuzzies! I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series!(less)

Fiona Macleod (Caitrin's mother) always thought that keeping the coven pure was the most important thing. However, she went a little too far with her pursuit, especially when she convince to the coven to trap James Maitland, the Baron of Kettering. She convinces them that the vampire will destroy Alpina Lindsay's daughter. Twenty years later, James awakes to a place he doesn't recognize and wondering how he got there.

Adrian Lindsay learns he had inherited Briarcraig Castle and decides to drag Blaire and Brannock to the Highlands. Once they step into the castle strange things start to happen. As they work on getting the castle fit for company, Blaire stumbles upon where James is locked up. Surprisingly, James finds himself wanting Blaire more than just a meal.

The first in the Gentleman Vampire series or Regency Vampire series, depending where you find this book. Anyways, I really liked this book. I mean it was stupendous. Since I stumble upon Westfield Brothers series and found out there were more books by this author I had to continue on my journey. I love how all the stories tie together. So, it really is worth reading them all in order.

There's nothing like coming across a fireball throwing witch, and Blaire being the battle-born witch doesn't let you down. She is one fierce witch. Come on you have to be, if you are going to be hurling fireballs. Then you have James who is a handsome vampire. You would let him get a nip of you if you met him. I love the dynamic between the two of them. Most men would be intimidated by Blaire, because she can fight better than most men. However, James finds her endearing. Plus, its amusing to watch to stubborn people battle each other with there wits.

So, I hope you guys get a chance to check out all of Lydia Dare's books, because they are really enjoyable. Especially, when they tie paranormal and regency together. I hope you are enjoy what your reading and I will talk to you later.(less)

Upon accompanying her brothers to a newly inherited Scotland castle and temporarily leaving her witch coven behind, Blaire discovers some hidden secrets that changes her perceptive on her Mother's past and love. Spooky castles, dark vampires, and historical flashbacks makes Dare's new book a real treat.

It Happened One Bite was a refreshing read since Dare's characters are oddly realistic and yet charmingly headstrong. Since her characters are easy to like, the reader can quickly become absorbed in the mystery, adventure, and romance going on between Blaire and James. Lots of enjoyable side characters enhance the stories depth and the love scenes are just the right amount of steam/heat without overdoing it. For me, James may not be the most dashing male lead out of Dare's supernatural series, but he does have his charms and is very jovial. Blaire begins the story with a bang since she's very out-going and isn't afraid to speak her mind. No matter how much her brother's reprimand her for her daring behavior, it's very apparent they depend on her a lot; but near the end of the book, Blaire's fire-cracker personality fizzles down somewhat, which was nice since she can come off as a little too-much at times. All in all, this was a fun read and I cannot wait to check out In the Heat of the Bite next, followed by Never Been Bit in September.

Likes: The younger brother Brannock wasn't really needed to complete the tale, but his personality added some comical entertainment.

Dislikes: The big bad villains in the story were kind of wimps overall.

REVIEWER’S OPINION:
Lydia Dare is a pseudonym for two authors Tammy Falkner and Jodie Pearson. I sometimes wonder if two authors co-writing is a good idea. Are they such good friends to the point that they don’t want to criticize each others’ work? And therefore the result is not as good as it should be? I don’t know. It’s just a thought. The heroine is headstrong and feisty. The hero vampyre loves her from the very beginning. The best I can say is that for the first half it kept my interest but only out of curiosity. During the last half, I wanted it to be over.

I became tired of translating the historical Scottish words. It took energy. It was more of a chore than being fun or cute. Following are examples of the words used throughout the entire book: ta ye (to you) ken (know) kent (known) isna (is not) doona (do not) willna (will not).

The plot used stupidity more than once which was not necessary. It could have been done differently. An example follows. Blaire by herself is not strong enough to fight a vampyre. James (the vampyre) is protecting her and her two brothers. She decides she must leave James and travel to where her coven is, so the coven can protect her and her brothers. She sneaks away in the middle of the night so James won’t know she is leaving. Now she has no protection while she travels.

Other things I did not like. The reason James was imprisoned didn’t work for me. It was based on someone lying to someone else. But why they lied was never explained. The reasons for the two bad guys wanting to harm James was also not well thought out. The resolution for the first bad guy wasn’t shown. The resolution for the second bad guy was too convenient and not very interesting. The thing that happened with James’ condition at the end was weird. It didn’t fit. I felt like the authors were trying to do something that had never (or rarely) been done before. To me, there’s a reason it hasn’t been done before. It didn’t feel right.

Not only do they find a place that Blaire didn’t even know existed (but has been in her family for a darned long time) but they also find a cask of money and a man locked in their cellar. Blaire’s surprised and is bound and determined to get to the bottom of why exactly James is there. She’s mighty attracted to James as well and is thrilled when he says he wants to marry her but he doesn’t love her – he actually says that he can’t as he doesn’t believe that vampyre’s have hearts. Blaire spent her whole life with her father who didn’t love her mother and she’s not going to relive that in her own life.

James mentally contacts his friend and maker, Matthew Blodswell, to come and get him. But when Matthew arrives he informs James that a couple of old “friends” (more like enemies) are after him as well and they’ll not stop until they harm James and anyone he cares about. That includes Blaire and her family. James refuses to leave Briarcraig until he knows that everyone is safe but Blaire has other ideas. In a move to keep her family safe Blaire returns with them to Edinburgh. James is devastated by Blaire’s desertion but in his heartbroken state some strange magic happens.

If you have been reading past books by Lydia Dare then you are a bit familiar with Blaire and her coven. Though this is the first book in the Regency Vampyre series it truly is a continuation of the series that began with the Westfield Wolves. I’m quite sure that I would have been confused at what was going on with the characters and the overall story arc without having read the Westfield Wolves books first. That being said I really did like what Dare did with her vamps! Dare made James and Matthew good vamps and quite likable - they were honorable, protective and fun to read about. You gotta love a vamp with a great sense of humor!

Blaire and James’s relationship was different - not bad – just different because of what Blaire was…which is a battle-born witch. She fights, she’s not a prissy regency miss and she curses with the best of them. James loved it and I loved him all the more because he wasn’t turned off by Blaire and her personality.

The end, with regard to the romance, was well done and I was quite happy with it. Unfortunately there was a whole issue that had to do with the previous coven members that was left hanging. We were told part of a story regarding the previous coven but then we weren’t given the end of the story. I’m sure (at least I hope) that this will be revisited in the other books of the trilogy but I have to admit that I was a bit frustrated with the lack of information.

Overall it was a fun book and delightful read.

From werewolves to vampires - there is nothing Lydia Dare can't tackle! Reviewed here, are all of Dare's wolf stories - LOVED them!!! Easily I can say when I open one of the books, I can't put it down until it's done, and I thank my lucky stars that every few months a new one comes out, cause I would be LOST!

This is the first book in Lydia Dare's new Gentleman Vampire series, with two more books due out later this year. What I found interesting about this series though, is that you meet some of the coven of witches in it from her Westfield Wolves series (A Certain Wolfish Charm, Tall Dark and Wolfish, The Wolf Next Door, and The Taming of the Wolf.)Two of which I have previously reviewed and enjoyed.

Where I have previously raved over Lydia Dare's lycans, I have now come to the conclusion that it doesn't have to be lycans to make me love her books - it is just her books! This was a quick read with quite the romantic conclusion.

Blaire is very headstrong and doesn't listen to any man in her life. She had grown up with an abusive drunken father so pretty much raised herself and her brothers. So even though one of her brothers is older than her, she is the one who pretty much rules the roost. When she discovers the man locked in the cellar of the castle that her brother has just inherited, she not only lets him out, but invites him to stay! Because she is a "battle-born" witch, she thinks that she is able to handle any situation - but she has never been up against vampyres before. It is a good thing that Lord Kettering is taken with her and vows to protect her - as he has a couple of vampyres that have been looking for him for the last 20 years.

Lord Kettering and his good friend and creator Matthew Blodswell aren't your run-of-the-mill vampyres. They are truly the gentleman vampyres that the series suggest. They do not kill for food and they never change a person into a vampyre unless the person wants to be changed. (They reminded me of the vampires from The Twilight series - difference is that this all takes place in the early 1800's.)

Being a paranormal romance, you have to ask about the sex scenes. Yes, there are sex scenes in the book, but I found them to be romantic - the kind you read while sort of holding your breath just waiting for what will happen next.

I am definitely a Lydia Dare fan and can't wait for the next book in the series. In the Heat of the Bite is due out in July with Never Been Bit following in September of this year.(less)

It Happened One Bite has a cast of strikingly sensual characters that have been well written and fleshed out with a poignant prose that relegates the paranormal to an erotic extreme.

It seems that lately I am drawn to the main character of books. Blaire Lindsey is the most unconventional woman you would ever meet in Regency time. Where most of the ladies of the time took great pains in lace and frippery Blaire is more comfortable hunting and fishing. Ms. Dare has created a strong willed woman that cares deeply for her charismatically charming coven and brothers. It’s no wonder that Blaire’s feisty spirit burns up the pages as she falls head over heels for the dangerous domineering vampire, James Maitland. Their wills are so strong that it is not hard to see the chemistry between the two protagonist burst from the pages.

I found James Maitland to be a fascinating character. Here he is just recovering from being in a “cursed sleep state” for the past twenty years and he bounces back with such vigor and vroom that he absolutely steels the story.

The allure of It Happened One Bite is no doubt the paranormal aspect – hands-down—no question, but what drew me the most was the relationship between Blaire and her brothers. You have to hand it to Blaire she has one brother who wants her to be more ladylike—Captain Aidan Lindsey and a younger brother who is adoring and overprotective—Brannock. Blaire is pretty independent and doesn’t take kindly to her brothers thinking she is weak in any way. The scene that had me laughing out loud is when Lord Kettering and his maker, Matthew Halkett, Earl of Blodswell walk in to the great hall to find Aidan and Blaire "tangled together, a mass of arms and legs, wrestling for position”>.

“Ye doona fight fair, Blaire,” the captain groaned.

No one said I have to fight fair,” she laughed as she released him from her grasp. Blaire stood up quickly as though she sensed James’ presence

‘James!’ The sound seemed torn from her. ‘I-I mean, Lord Kettering,’ she corrected. Her cheeks colored prettily when she realized all the men’s eyes were on her”

I believe this is the perfect scene that not only shows Blaire’s unconventionality, but her strength mixed with her unmistakable innocent charm.

It Happened One Bite is my first into the paranormal world of author Lydia Dare but certainly will not be my last. Beloved characters from TALL,DARK AND WOLFISH and THE TAMING OF THE WOLF round this titillating arousing supporting cast to help and trip-up our protagonists.

Besides the deep connection between Blaire and her brothers I found her familial connect to her coven a dynamic part of the story. The sisterhood of the coven was so striking of how individual they were strong but united the were almost unstoppable. I was struck by how each witch in the coven would do anything for their sister witch. It didn't matter how small or great the challenge they all rose as one cohesive unit. Another aspect of the story that effected me was the relationship between James Maitland, Earl of Kettering and his maker Matthew Halkett, Earl of Blodsoe. The following scene is a perfect description of there deep adoration for each other.

"Some bonds are difficult to break,' he murmured more to himself than to her. 'Thank heavens.'
Blair touch a finger to her hidden ring and toyed it absently as she trailed behind the baron.

When she reached the great hall, she stopped dead in her tracks. But Kettering didn't. He nearly flew into the man who stood in the entryway beside her brother. The two men clasped hands tightly, and it almost looked as though they both took a long deep breath together"

Through the progrssion of the story we come to feel the true bond between James and Matthew. Also, we are shone how Blodswell came upon the dying lord and transformed him. Their relationship is not pivotal point need to express the story forward. But as a reader I find I like a bit of the back story of a vampire. For me it seems to speed my understanding of what motivates the characters into action and their reactions to other characters.

The greater theme of It Happened One Bite is the unity of family, whether by blood or not. Family and its intricate workings is the theme that is threaded throughout the story. A smaller theme for me was the acceptance of yourself and of others. Even though the story is fictional and based in the paranormal realm I believe the Ms.Dare delivered his prose of acceptance whether unconventional or unconventional and that acceptance and tolerance is key. This was my first book from Lydia Dare and I found it an enjoyable read with just the right amount of steaminess for me. Blaire was a take no prisoners warrior witch who could create fireballs out of thin air and who rarely backs down from a threat. James was an endearing character as well but I really felt like his maker and good friend, Blodswell, stole the show for me. Blaire is a Scottish witch who can conjure deadly fire balls. She does not want to marry; she has her coven of sisters for company and really doesn't feel she needs a man. Besides, she has witnessed how poorly her drunkard of a father treated her mother. Blaire loves her life but her brother's sudden inheritance of Briarcraig Castle brings enormous changes. Soon Blaire finds her family moving to check out the run down castle during the cold winter. As soon as she enters the castle, the ring she carries on her neck begins to warm. It appears that the castle may be haunted. In addition, Blaire is plagued by dreams of a handsome ghost.

James Maitland, Baron of Kettering is a vampire who was innocently attacked by a coven of Scottish witches and his ring stolen from him. It is many years later and he finally awakens to find himself imprisoned in a strange castle. When he is finally freed by another Scottish witch named Blaire, James is burning to discover what exactly happened to him. He believes that Blaire can help him. Soon they soon grow to care for each other. But what will happen when James realizes that Blaire's mother was part of the coven that imprisoned him? To complicate matters further, an old feud between James and another man bent on revenge flares and threatens them all.

This is a light, fun read. Lydia Dare's characters are always entertaining. I enjoyed the interplay and caring between Blaire and James but also between Blaire and her brothers and coven sisters. Blaire is a practical and resourceful character and James is dashing and charming.

It Happened One Bite is a cheery and easy read. Fans of this series will not be disappointed.

These are covers that make me want to consider buying a cover so that others won't see what I am reading!

"It Happened One Bite" is an utterly delightful romp into a romantic land where regular folks can inter-marry and co-mingle with beautiful and handsome werewolfs (lycans) ,vampyers and witches. This paranormal romance series is a delight; a rollicking romp through a world of romantic possibilities where every one's 'gifts' are appreciated and considered worthy.

Beautiful witch Blaire Lindsey's brother Aiden inherits a key to the family inheritance of Briarcraig Castle in the Scottish Highlands. Unbeknownst to Blaire, this is the ancestral home of the "battle-born" witches. Blaire's mother was a battle-born and Lindsey inherited the battle-born legacy from her. Blaire had no knowledge about this family castle and found it odd that her mother had not passed down any information about it before her death. Blaire has heard rumor that the castle is haunted and, as soon as she and brother's enter the old rooms they feel a strange force at work.

Blaire's brothers, Aiden and Brannock, did not inherit the same witchy qualities as Blaire has. They go about exploring the castle and the town; planning the cleaning and refurbishing of it and meeting and greeting some of the highland locals - even inviting two lovely young women and their father to dinner at the castle. No matter that the family does not, as yet, have a staff or operable kitchen. In the blink of a witches eye they're off to town to hire staff, a cook and supplies. In the meantime Blaire has discovered a locked basement room and, more to the point, she has heard odd sounds coming from the room.

What follows this puzzling discovery is a delightful tale of witches, battling vampyres (male and female) and werewolves (lycans) - that can all, when the proverbial chips are down, work together for the greater good. A love story between the last of the great battle ground witches and her vampyre love, James, Lord Kettering! There is a lot of action, love, and interaction of the species contained in the pages of this book - all of it thoroughly delightful -dare I say spell binding !

This series and these authors make me smile - and I want to read more of their inventive, rollicking good tales. If you can get away from the cover this is a truly entertaining, delightful book to while away a couple of the hours. You can't help but find yourself totally bewitched by the fun and imagination of it all!

In It Happened One Bite, the author team who write as Lydia Dare branch out from their regency werewolves to vampires - or rather vampyres, and trade England for Scotland, the connection between the two series is that Tall, Dark and Wolfish and The Taming of the Wolf saw two of Blaire's coven sisters gain Lycan mates. Even though this story is really vampire-lite, both James and Blaire are quite appealing, so I found their romance with its touch of steam and dab of peril to be enjoyable. Also fun, the authors bring back a few of the past characters, and I am pretty sure that the stars of the next two books were setup in Jame's vampire mentor and another character from the last two books who looks to be daylight-challenged in the near future.

So It Happened One Bite is a pleasant change of place if you are looking for a light paranormal romance with a touch of the historical. And since I am intrigued by both Blaire's remaining unmated witch sisters and the two vampire leading-men-to-be, I'll be checking out In the Heat of the Bite and Never Been Bit. If you don't mind fur instead of fangs Dare's Regency werewolf brothers are available for ereaders as Lydia Dare Wolf Bundle.

I really like this continuation/book series. This one was no exception. Blaire was a super tough witch who could wield fire in her hands! Pretty awesome power. I discovered this book after my good friend; Dee was reading it and was totally raving about it. This is the first is a new series for Lydia Dare, with two more exciting books due out this year.

The first surprise is that it is set in the Regency era. Our heroine is Blaire Lindsay - a witch. Our hero is, James Maitland Lord Kettering, who is a delicious Vampire. James has just been woken up from a 20 year long. When Blair discovers James she releases him from his prison only to figure out that he was put there originally by Blaire’s mother and her cloven of witches after a vision about James and Blair in the future. You don’t find out the true reason why James was imprisoned until the end of the story. There was also a secondary story line where James and his Master, the Earl of Blodwell are being hunted down by two other Vamps that are set out for revenge. The reason behind this is also not revealed until the end.

The pacing of the book was well thought out. I didn’t find any spots in the book lacking or slow paced. The only thing I can point out is that everything came to light at the end very quickly. It sought of all boiled down to a couple of pages. And I would have liked the reveal about why the two rouge vamps were chasing James to have been a little more shocking.

James is not your average run of the mill Vamp. He is a gentleman and has always been taught to behave so. He wasn’t a dark broody character and if I didn’t know he was a vampyre, I would not have thought otherwise. He was very dashing, but I felt that there wasn’t enough of a description of him. We were told of his characteristics but not his looks per say.

Blaire is a battle witch. So she is straight up a tough nut. She went against the grain for her era. Not lady like at all. But that just made me love Blaire all that much more. Sometimes the snootiness of these Regency women just gets too much for me. She is smart, and strong willed and has a wicked talent of forming fire balls in her palms. Only down side – as a battle born witch I would have loved to have read a scene where she used these talents in the true sense. Not just play with fire.

James and Blaire really complemented each other. They wasn’t too much fighting of their feelings for one another either which is always nice. There was a lot of cute stolen kisses – which were always conveniently interrupted (but aren’t they always?) and only one sex scene, but it was a good sex scene. I wasn’t panting while reading it, but it was.......sweet?

Overall, this was a light read. But it was a well worth it read. I will defiantly be reading her next book in the series which is due for release July 2011 –In the Heat of The Bite.

James Maitland is furious when he wakes to find he has been trapped for decades in an abandoned castle. He wants to find the witches and make them pay for what they did to him for no reason at all. First he must find something that was taken from him and find out what it is about Blaire that draws him to her, besides her blood.

This is the second book I have read by Lydia Dare and she has become one of my favorite authors. I lost lots of sleep because I just wanted to keep reading a little more to see what happens next. I really liked all the characters and enjoyed getting to know Blaire. She is defiantly someone I would want to have as a friend. I liked how this book fit in and connected well with the others. Although this book can be read anytime, you might enjoy it more by reading the previous ones first, especially the one right before called The Taming of the Wolf. I went into this book expecting a light, fluffy read. It sounded intriguing but I didn't think it would blow me away. However, I really, really ended up liking James. His reaction to Blaire was hilarious. I loved when he'd go to seduce her or enthrall her and end up completely enraptured by her scent or smile. It made me grin like a stupid person every single time.
