“Formula for Murder” is the latest in the Maternal Instincts Mystery series from Diana Orgain. She hooks the reader in right away with her clever chapter headings. Well, not chapter headings, exactly. Each chapter begins with a “To Do” list, like some of us begin our day. And as the life of first-time mom Kate Connolly—the likeable protagonist—becomes more and more complicated, so does the “To Do” list. Just like in the real world.

On the way to get Christmas photos of baby Laurie, aspiring private investigator Kate Connelly's is hit from behind by a silver SUV, which then drives off. One of the good Samaritans who comes to her aid learns that the car belongs to the French consulate, but when Kate and her husband Jim approach them, they claim diplomatic immunity.

On their way out of the consulate, Kate and Jim spot two television reporters which piques Kate's always active curiosity. A few days later one of the reporters is...more

"Formula for Murder" is a humorous "who-done-it" mystery. It's the third novel in the series, but you don't need to have read the previous novels to understand this one. Also, reading the books out of order won't spoil the previous mysteries.

The novel was fast-paced and a fun read. The suspense came from sorting out the clues of who-done-it and why, the ever-increasing body count, and the need for Kate to get all her Christmas things done before Christmas while also solving the mystery.

The detai...more

Kate and baby Laurie are on their way to get Laurie's first Christmas photos taken when their car is hit at high speed by another car and the other car doesn't even stop, just drives away. Thankfully both Kate and Laurie are physically fine. A witness to the accident gets the license plate and a good description of the offending car. The car is from a fleet from the French Embassy and of course, they claim diplomatic immunity. Kate's husband Jim wants answers and they head straight for the embas...more

I was sent this book by the publisher to review. I was excited because I had read the other books in the Maternal Instincts series.

Kate and her new baby, Laurie are on their way to get Laurie’s pictures taken with Santa when they are involved in a hit and run accident. Thanks to a witness, the identity of the other driver is revealed. Unfortunately, it’s a car from the French Embassy who are admitting nothing. Driven by the desire for justice and the fact the insurance company refuses to pay for...more

A light, fun read!

Kate's baby is slowly but surely growing up, and Kate's getting started launching her new life as a PI. Her priority at the moment is Laurie's first Christmas, and it's while they are on the way for Christmas photos that she's the victim of a hit and run accident.

Once it's clear the police aren't going to do anything about the incident, Kate wants to take matters into her own hands. When this investigation brings her a client that will pay her to continue, she doesn't have a c...more

New mom and new PI Kate Connelly is in a hit and run, and witnesses identify the car as belonging to someone from the French consulate. The consulate denies it, but it leads to a case for Kate when she sees a reporter leaving and the reporter turns up dead two days later. Was she working on a story on the French consulate that lead to her death? I love the characters, and the story was interesting. It did bog down a little in the middle, but it picked up again for a fun finish.

First-time Mom, Kate Connolly may have found the perfect work-from-home mommy job: private investigator. After all, the hours are flexible, she can bring the baby along on stakeouts, and if you're going to be up all night anyway, you might as well solve some crimes....

Kate and little Laurie are on their way to take baby's first-holiday photos when they become the victims of a hit-and-run. Luckily they escape unharmed, and a witness identifies the car's French diplomatic license plates. When Kate...more

I enjoyed the first two book in this series and did not enjoy this one any less. I don’t read many mysteries but if I did I would probably stick with what I am told this is which is a cozy mystery.

From Kate’s to do list to her learning how to be a PI to her missing her baby’s important moments(Like christmas pictures!) I found the book an irresistible read and hard to put down. Although because I do like this series so much I stretched out the reading so I could have more of the book to enjoy....more

New mother Kate and her baby are driving through the streets of San Francisco when their car is totaled by a hit and run driver. Witnesses see the license plate and tell the fortunately uninjured Kate that the car belongs to the French consulate. Since Kate is working as an apprentice PI as a way to stay home with baby Lauri, she stakes out the consulate and sees a local reporter leaving. When the reporter is found dead, Kate realizes that there's more behind this case than a traffic accident.

First off I have to say, I just love this series. Each book is set on the shoulders of the prior one and you are not let down.

Kate and baby Laurie are off to get their first 'Christmas' pictures taken when wham! They are hit by a SUV and not any run of the mill one but a diplomats. To my delight, even Jim, the husband gets involved.

The characters are delightful, and the location is well-described, and the humor...terrific!

This is a lovely series and I hope it goes on for ages.

I guess you can have any kind of mystery novel... this is a maternity "detective."
being a new mom myself, I can relate to some of the feelings/adventures that the main character experiences. Overall, a fun read.

Enjoyed it enough - good easy bathtub read. Bought this when Borders went out of business for super cheap - I'll probably read the other books in the series if I can get them for free.

ok - liked the story but the ending and "tie up" was thin....

Fun, quick read!

You would never know it from the cover, but this book takes place during Christmastime. That was an unexpected bonus for me! In between Christmas shopping, taking her baby to meet Santa and preparing for Christmas dinner, Kate is also trying to solve a murder. I love the to-do lists at the start of most chapters, and little baby Laurie. I hope there will be more in this series!

Easy read and exactly what I would expect from a cozy mystery. I didn't guess whodunnit, though once it was revealed, I wasn't surprised. It just felt like the resolution came so abruptly. This was the most recent book in the series and it was published a little over two years ago, so I am not sure if there will be more or not. I hope so! I really enjoy the characters.

This is the third in the Maternal Instincts series, but the first one that I have read. I thought it was quite good, and the mystery was difficult to solve (although I did get a bit confused towards the end). Overall it was a fun and entertaining read, and I plan to read the earlier books in the series, and keep an eye out for further installments.

Another fun outing with a new mom-turned-sleuth. Bonus points that her baby is named Laurie.
