On a snowy winter day in 1945 at age 12, Marika Roth barely escaped her own death only to witness the execution of hundreds of Jews by the side of the Danube. I struggle with rating this one. Parts of Ms. Roth's story resonate to my soul. It is obvious that she is an artist, for she paints a picture with her words. I loved the first half of the book. Once she got married I felt disconnected from her story. The story jumped around and was not as well written as her childhood tales. I was put off by her behavior and found her hard to like. The first half was a 5 star read. The second half was a 2, so I am compromising with a 3.

Well written story of a strong woman.

Not many people could survive the life she lived either physically or emotionally but she refused to give up. I recommend this book as encouragement for anyone who is having a hard time with living. She never asks for your pity but just tells it the way it was. You will feel better about your problems.

I was fortunate to see this wonderful memoir in manuscript form. It is intensely moving and action-packed.
