Fight tackles the very delicate subject of abuse, contrasting its horrifying results - sometimes the abused fulfills the inevitable role of becoming the abuser, while at other times the abused simply continues to live as the perpetually victimized.

As the abuser, Carl was well portrayed, chillingly malevolent and utterly insane. It was very easy to delineate and accept how his history had shaped who he'd become, and it was entirely evident that, even in the role of abuser, he was still the victim...more

First and foremost, I think I must stated that this book is written using two point of views. Some people might not like this kind of writing. However, I have no problem what-so-ever because I think, in the end, the book is really, REALLY good. Another warning, I don't see this as a romance, though there love is part of the process from being a victim into one who is healed.

We are being introduced to him from the beginning as he...more First and foremost, I think I must stated that this book is written using two point of views. Some people might not like this kind of writing. However, I have no problem what-so-ever because I think, in the end, the book is really, REALLY good. Another warning, I don't see this as a romance, though there love is part of the process from being a victim into one who is healed.

The first point of view comes in 1st person, in the voice of Paul. We are being introduced to him from the beginning as he suffers from domestic violence from his abusive lover, Carl. We will also stay with him as he struggles into trying to stop being a victim, to take his life back, and the epilogue as Paul go through the healing process. It's a powerful stuff, even if it only covers half of the chapters in this book.

I don't know any victims of domestic violence but I really love how this story shows Paul's psychological welfare too. I mean, I read few m/m books with domestic violence in it, and few slightly disappoint me because it shows how easy the victims are healed and accept the love. Not Paul. He struggles with the guilt; he feels that part of the trigger of the abuse is because he is not good enough. He also tries to justify the abuse by thinking that the relationship used to be good and Carl really loves him. That is why I think his part is powerful, because he doesn't jump immediately to the salvation, the unconditional love being given to him by his friends and his next lover. It takes time for him to heal, and even as I finish the book, I believe it will be an ongoing process for him.

The second point of view comes in 3rd person, in the mind of Carl. He's the abusive lover as well as the serial killer. This is not a spoiler because this fact is revealed very early in the book. Carl's story is a story of a troubled man, who also suffered from abusive childhood (in the form of his father). We will read how in Carl's twisted mind, everything he does, including the killings, is a testament of love for Paul. For some, Carl's story will be frustrating because it takes a way a good half part from Paul's story.

But not me. While yes, there are times I wish the portion of Carl's story is being cut down because I want to read more about Paul, Carl's story -- in way -- is something I sometimes encounter in mystery/police procedural books. It still interests me to read the mind of the villain. It might be a cliché that someone is bad because of a bad nurturing but all I'm saying is that I don't mind reading his part at all. It adds the 'sinister' part of the book, when we learn what Carl wants to do and what his plans are for Paul.

In addition to Paul and Carl, there are other characters that add nuance of the story. Vic, the cop who becomes Paul's future lover and moral support. Brian, Paul's best friend and Brian's lover, Lil.

In the end ... this is a satisfying book but might not be for everyone. It's not romance, it has 1st and 3rd person writing switch back and forth from chapter to chapter AND the story of the bad guy takes half part of the book. So you have been warned ...

PS: I'm struggling on which genre I want to put this book on my shelves *grin*. It's not really romance heavy but there isn't mystery because the killer is mentioned very early. I guess in the end, I choose general fiction rather than romance or mystery.(less)

I knew it would be anything but a full out and out romance story. The blurb tells you that much and it tells you to expect there to be angst, how could there not be with the amount of abuse the blurb is laden with? As it’s known, I love a book that pulls at my heart with a solid plot circling around real life situations and this one didn’t let me down.

A dark, troubling and emotionally intense story, Fight is quite some read. It explores one man's breaking away from an abusive relationship, and the consequences of that. There are some fantastic secondary characters, and the action will keep you turning the pages. It's not an easy book, but one with a lot of emotional truth in it as well as some compelling action.
