The first time I read this book I was already a Nora Roberts fan, but had not read any J. D. Robb books. I normally don't get into futuristic or murder mysteries much.
After reading this book I was hooked. I began aquiring all the JD books and promptly turned my daughter onto them. We are now in the process of completing her collection, as I already own them all.
I Would recommend this series (...in death) to anyone who likes a) a good 'who done it'
b) a REALLY good love story

Take note: This is the only Nora Roberts book I have ever liked I think it was the combining of the two stories and the two styles that Nora Roberts/JD Robb uses in her writings. Clever. It will probably be a long time before you hear me use clever or like regarding Nora Roberts again-- even though three people I adore tend to find her books what they need at a certain time.

This is the first time I know of an author writing as two separate yet equal writers; as we all know J.D. Robb is really Nora Roberts.

I'd never before read anything by Nora Roberts and hadn't read a complete book by J.D. Robb (though the characters seem familiar, so I think I've read a short story). We start out with the first part of the book being a novella by Nora Roberts. It’s a nice romance story with a little mystery sideline weaved in. It’s not really OBS’s usual genre, but it’s still fun.

Laine Tavish is the daughter of a career criminal, Big Jack O’Hara. Jack was always small time though, so Laine is floored when investigator, Max Gannon, tells her that he took part in a huge diamond heist. But one of Jack’s partners decides he doesn’t want to settle for a portion of the stones, but instead wants them all. Laine has to start believing Max as people start dying and both her home and her antique re-sale shop, Remember When, is broken into.

She turns to Max and they work together to start recovering the diamonds as they fall madly in love with one another.

Then, Nora hands the reins off to her alter ego, J.D. Robb, for the second part of the book, which is a novella in her futuristic In Death series.

It’s the year of 2059 and It’s been over 50 years since the diamond heist and the last quarter of the diamonds have never been recovered. Laine and Max’s granddaughter, Samantha Gannon, has just had her book about the whole ordeal published. Suddenly people start dying as someone is still on the hunt for those last remaining diamonds and Eve Dallas is on the case.

As I said before, I just loved the concept of this book, before I even cracked the spine. I’m not a big fan of short stories or novellas, but the way that the two stories where linked made the two novellas seem like one full-length novel instead. The cover could have definitely used some work though…just a bit too bland for my taste.

My only real complaint about the book is a tragedy that occurs in several novellas; Trying to fit so much in so few pages. The first part of the novel suffered from this with Laine and Max’s relationship. It was too rushed and seemed unrealistic. They only knew each other a couple of days and were talking about marriage!! And that was after Max got busted by the cops for breaking into the store she owns.

Other than that the book didn’t feel like a couple of short stories at all. The storylines were strong and well-developed as where the characters. We didn’t even lose the steamy sex scenes and warm romance between Eve and Roarke like we did in some of the other In Death novellas. In fact, this was the best of the In Death short stories I’ve read so far. And it’s really renewed my faith in the series.

I just finished listening the audio, and what a great book. The audio cd consists of 14 discs, evenly divided between the back story Nora writes under her own name and the "In Death" section. What I especially love is the connection breaching the time barrier and the length of the Robb portion is twice as long as her shorter novelettes.

Points for the cute idea--have Roberts start with one of her mystery/romances and then morph into Robb, jump into the future, and have Dallas and Roarke finish the story along with the romantic couple's granddaughter. I also give some extra points for a well-drawn, creepy villain. Problem, I could barely get through the lamer first half before things picked up in the second. This book surprised me. I haven't read that much of Nora Roberts, and this is my first JD Robb book so I didn't know what to expect. Someone recommended it to me, and I'm glad I read it. It started off well enough, the characters were great and I enjoyed their chemistry, thought that they moved on to their "relationship" a tad too quickly, but I got over that. Remember When was pretty good. Part One was Roberts story and it dealt with Laine and Max. Laine's dad is a thief and was involved in a big diamond heist. There is love at first site between Laine and Max, but there is a lot of stuff between them. Biggest is that Max is looking for her father as part of all this. But murder isn't Big Jack's style so they have to find the killer and all the "hot rocks".

It's a clever story. Good characters, even if the two do fall in love immediately. I wish for a little scene more about her father, but overall all a good story. It's interesting the writing style feels very different from the In Death books. 3.5 stars

PART TWO: "Big Jack"- In this we are back in 2059 with Eve Dallas. Samantha Gannon, granddaughter to Max & Laine has just gotten home from a book tour. The book is called "Hot Rocks" and it's basically the story from Part One, with a few details left out. But when she returns home, her best friend is dead, her maid is dead, and Dallas thinks she may be next. Someone is after the rest of the diamonds. You get a little history, and the story could stand on it's without the first. I still wanted more about Big Jack.

The time line of this book is a little wonky as far as the In Death Series world goes. In the house, the book seems to be set just after Portrait in Death, where Sommerset broke his leg and had just left. Eve and Dallas even have a sexual encounter they talk about during Imitation In Death. But in regards to work, it is clearly after "Imitation" based on Peabody. SO that was weird and I fixated on it a bit because it bothered me. I also realized what a different feel JD Robb's writing has from Nora Roberts. 4 stars

This is actually two books in one. The first tale told in Nora Roberts signature style. It is set in our time and tells the romance between Laine Tavish and Max Gannon. It is about love and stolen diamonds. The second book is told in J.D. Robb's signature style. That means Eve, Peabody and Roarke in the future get to find the "hot rocks" and the murder gets solved and finally comes full circle.

While I've known for years that Nora Roberts and JD Robb were one and the same, I've just recently discovered JD Robb is an entirely freaked out version of Nora Roberts on crack!! The story lines delve deep into the evilness of humankind while still delivering top notched romance!! I liked the collaboration of the two authors and was a bit relieved that Dallas and Roarke's romance is no different than the everyday Jane and Joe.

It's been a while since I've read Nora Roberts as herself. I quite liked her story. And I liked how it tied in with Eve's story 50 years in the future. I thought that I remembered Summerset coming back in the last book, though. Am I wrong? I could be, but I thought I remembered that. But he was definitely still gone in this one. Overall this was a really good book. I enjoyed the first, Nora Roberts, part better then the second, J. D. Robb, part, but mainly because I like to be there when the couple meet and fall in love. Ou seja, a primeira parte escrita por Nora Roberts no seu registo Romance com um toque de policial, está o habitual da autora, as personagens são bem construidas, o enredo/trama é interessante e bem desenvolvido. Depois temos a transação para a segunda parte, escrita pelo pseudónimo J.D.Robb no seu registo de Policial com um toque de romance. Podem achar que a diferença não se nota visto que contém os mesmo registos mesmo que um pouco mais de um do que de outro. Mas a verdade é que há bastantes diferenças. O toque policial que Nora confere normalmente aos seus romances, não vêm com a componente cientifica, nem com todos os processos que habitualmente vemos no CSI para se encontrar o culpado de certo crime. O policia/detective é normalmente uma personagem secundária que vai interagindo com os protagonistas e não nos é revelado todo o seu trabalho de campo. Com J.D.Robb a parte policial é dominante na sua história, a protagonista encara mesmo a patente de Tenente e vimos todo o seu trabalho de escritório ou de campo, vimos todas as teorias que se vão desenrolando na cabeça, vimos cada passo que é dado para se chegar ao culpado do crime, e nas entrelinhas vimos então um pouco de romance (o quanto basta)!
Na minha opinião a transação da autora para o seu pseudónimo foi feita de maneira bastante inteligente e não me pareceu haver qualquer falta de coerência com certos factos do passado quando falados no futuro, penso que a autora teve o cuidado de manter a história e os personagens bastante sólidos.

Quanto há história, na primeira parte, como já vem sendo habitual achei os protagonistas deliciosos. Como já tenho dito o romance acontece de maneira um pouco abrupta e rápida, mas como é habitual na autora, já não me faz confusão.
A segunda parte, foi o meu primeiro contacto com J.D.Robb e com a Tenente Dalas e Roarke e achei simplesmente fantástico. Eve Dallas é como que um modelo de mulher, apesar de já ter percebido que toda aquela frieza, determinação e força tenham um motivo bastante triste e sórdido, depois quando a vimos ser quebrada por Roarke e vimos o seu lado mais romântico, sem nunca perder a sua postura é realmente brilhante.

Com esta leitura, tive que abrir portas á série policial de J.D.Robb pois tenho que conhecer melhor os protagonistas da segunda parte, e fiquei satisfeita com esta leitura! (less)

Comprei este livro como prenda de Natal para a minha mãe. Ela nunca tinha lido nada da Nora Roberts e como este junta os dois estilos (o romance da NR e o policial da JD Robb, que foi dos aspectos que me chamou mais a atenção) pensei que lhe podia dar um "2 em 1". Ela devorou e adorou o livro... e eu também!

I'll admit that this series of books is my audio guilty-pleasure. While I'm sure it's a great book for beach and vacation, I just love the way it's narrated. Not just this book but Roberts/Robb's intire "In Death" series. The narrator gives each character their own voice and personality. The best series yet to listen to while walking the dog.

Eleanor Marie Robertson was born on October 10, 1950 in Silver Spring, Maryland, USA. She was the youngest of the five children, also the only girl, of a marriage with Irish ancestors. Her family were avid readers, so books were always important in her life. She attended a Catholic school and credits the nuns with instilling in her a sense of discipline. During her sophomore year in high school, she transferred to a local public school, where she met Ronald Aufdem-Brinke, her future first husband.

In Augusy 17, 1968, as soon as she had graduated from High School, Eleanor married, against her parents' wishes. The marriage settled in Keedysville, Maryland. Her husband worked at his father's sheet-metal business before joining her parents in their lighting company. While, she worked briefly as a legal secretary. "I could type fast but couldn't spell, I was the worst legal secretary ever," she says now. After their sons, Dan and Jason, were born she stayed home. Calling this her "Earth Mother" years, she spent much of her time doing crafts, including ceramics and sewing her children's clothes. The marriage ended separating, and they obtained the divorce in January 1985.

In February 1979, a blizzard in forced her hand to try another creative outlet. She was snowed in with a three and six year old with no kindergarten respite in sight and a dwindling supply of chocolate. During the now famous blizzard, she pulled out a pencil and notebook and began to write down one of those stories. It was there that a career was born. Several manuscripts and rejections later, her first book, Irish Thoroughbred, was published by Silhouette in 1981 as Nora Roberts, a shortened form of her birth name Eleanor Marie Robertson, because she assumed that all authors had pen names.

Eleanor wrote under the pseudonym Jill March a story for a magazine titled "Melodies of Love".

Eleanor met her second husband, Bruce Wilder, when she hired him to build bookshelves. They were married in July 1985. Her husband owns and operates a bookstore in Boonsboro, Maryland called "Turn the Page Books". Since that time, they've expanded their home, traveled the world.

In 1992, she decided adopted other pseudonym so to publish a futuristic-suspense novels, she first decided to use the pseudonym D.J. MacGregor, but she discovered that this pseudonym was used by another author. In 1995, her first "In Death" serial novel was published under the pseudonym J.D. Robb, the initials "J.D." were taken from her sons, Jason and Dan, while "Robb" is a shortened form of Roberts.

Eleanor has also been known as Sara Hardesty, because when the "Born In" series was released in U.K. it carried that name instead of Nora Roberts. She has since changed publishers.

Eleanor has been plagiarized by another best-selling romance writer, Janet Dailey. The practice came to light after a reader read Nora Roberts' "Sweet Revenge" and Janet Dailey's "Notorious" back-to-back; she noticed several similarities and posted the comparable passages on the Internet. Calling the plagiarism "mind rape," Eleanor sued Janet Daily. In 1997, Janet, admitted to repeatedly plagiarizing from Nora Roberts' work, and that both "Aspen Gold" and "Notorious" lifted heavily from Nora Roberts's work. Both of those novels were pulled from print after Janet's admission. She acknowledged the plagiarism and blamed it on a psychological disorder. In a settlement, Janet paid Eleanor an undisclosed sum, which Eleanor donated to the Literacy Volunteers of America.

A founding member of the Romance Writers of America (R.W.A.), she was the first inductee in the organization's Hall of Fame. She also is a member of several writers groups and has won countless awards from her colleagues and the (less)
