Night Watch (The Telling #2)
by
Eden Winters (Goodreads Author)
Javier "Jay" Ortiz had always considered the Fourth of July a time for celebrations, fireworks, and cookouts – that is, until he met Michael Ritter, a US Army veteran traumatized by the horrors of war. For Michael, the Roman candles sound like rockets and the pops and blasts of fireworks mimic rifles and grenades. When bitter memories suck him into the hell of his own mind...more

Night Watch is a sequel to The Telling and takes place after the main characters, Jay and Michael, have been dating for a year. Michael is suffering from severe PTSD after serving in Iraq and the fireworks commemorating the Fourth of July promise to induce flashbacks. Jay wants to help Michael through the night but just getting home may be a problem.

Jay and Michael are continue to build and grow in their relationship. Michael is still in recovery from his time in the service, although he is getting stronger the road is still long. This story lets us really get to know Jay and his feelings. I like the honesty in his feelings. He is honest with himself that he has to choose between his love for Micheal and what his dream for his life might look like.
Overall:
This story probably isn't strong enough to stand alone, although the plot itself is self contained. It's a nice story, but nothing amazing. It is very touching to watch Jay "deal" with Michael's problems and seeing the relationship from his perspective (since Michael would surely say Jay got the raw end of the deal).
What I liked
I felt the story really picked up once Jay actually arrived home. I realize the need for the detour, but that section dragged a little for me (on the other hand,...more

This is a free story that is a sequel to Winters' The Telling. It is a snapshot of one evening in Michael and Jay's life together, after the conclusion of their full length novel.
Michael is a returned serviceman, having been medically discharged after his time in Iraq left him with reduced hearing and PTSD. The evening in snapshot is July 4. Needless to say, fireworks and PTSD are not a good combination, and the story illustrates exactly how both men cope with Michael's PTSD. It also reinforces...more

Nice little sequel to The Telling about a couple that I don't think I can get enough of. I love how it touches on the tough issues of a relationship for a transitioning military vet and the man who must except what is with patience and love. I love the plot and characters of this shorter piece.
In this one Jay really shines as he must make a tough decision whether to help rescue a young family or get back to Michael who will be suffering through the fireworks and how the sights and sounds will t...more

I really enjoyed both The Telling #1 and its sequel Night Watch. The Telling begins by introducing us to Michael, coming home from from Iraq after being injured and dealing with PTSD. He meets his half-sister's roommate, Jay, and they begin a relationship. Jay helps Michael come out of the closet with his family and the community. Night Watch continues about a year after The Telling. NW is a short story that specifically addresses 4th of July and PTSD and how both characters, Jay and Michael, ha...more
This story was truly beautiful and inspirational! I had forgotten how much I loved Jay and Michael and how amazing they are separately and as a couple. I just adore them! I enjoyed the glimpse into their future, seeing they're still so in love and that it hasn't been easy but they stuck it out. Oh and hot damn for the sexual healing *whew*

Another tender moment between Jay and Michael, as the July 4th festivities gets underway. It’s a glorious occasion for Jay but a horrendous experience for Michael. For the fireworks trigger flashbacks of bombing attacks in Iraq. As Jay rushes to be by Michael’s side, he is held up by a traffic accident involving Spanish-only speaking victims. The EMS need a translator. He’s definitely torn between the who to save first…

This is a nice continuation of Michael and Jay's story from The Telling. I love how this author took a very serious subject (PTSD) and did not tie everything up in a nice, neat bow. A year later Michael is still suffering (as a lot of vets do) and this story tells how he and Jay deal with an episode of flashbacks on the 4th of July. Certain parts were sad to read but in the end it was all about the relationship between Michael and Jay and them being there for each other regardless of the circums...more
I was so happy with this as the sequel to The Telling. It was such a romantic story and it as a great read. I am so glad Eden Winters did not magically cure Micheal she has made these two books feel so natural. I really was happy with the way things worked out.
I would highly recommend these two books. They are just so sweet, I do not think many authors can do PTSD healing so well. And this was just done to perfection for me. :)

A short, sweet but very fitting sequel to Michael's and Jay's story. I felt the length of the story was more like an extended epilogue which rounds the complete story off nicely rather than a sequel.
The only thing I was not sure about was whether a steamy romp is really the remedy for an anxiety attack from someone suffering from PTSD - but hey, if it works then why not - lol!
Still very nicely written though.

This is a good short story. As with all Eden Winters stories it is well crafted by a wordsmith who gets inside the heads of her characters and brings their feelings out for the inspection and understanding of her readers. I recommend it for readers who enjoyed The Telling and, like me, can’t get enough of Michael and Jay. It is a free story, available from her website, and well worth the time to download and enjoy. I can hardly wait for the story about Michael’s Marine buddy Ryan and Jay’s forme...more
This was a very short, but emotional read when you see how someone wants to love, and help the person he cares about go through PTSD,, Its heart-breaking that so many come back from war with this condition, and to see it portrayed in this short story after reading the first book, well, you come to realize its an on-going process, and not an automative HEA... as in all relationships..it takes time, investment and work, as well as the love.
3.5
I found this as a free story and did not realize it was a sequel to The Telling. It is a very short and touching story about Michael and Jay and how the after effects of war touch their lives. This is presented during one evening, the Fourth of July. I will definitely read The Telling to learn more about them.

Love this additional glimpse into Jay and Michael's lives as the live and continue to love each other while struggling to overcome Michael's war scarred life and move on to happiness.
Eden Winter's wonderful story telling easily sucks you in and you feel the love, caring and compassion of both Michael and Jay.

Sweet short story follow-up to The Telling. It was fun to get to see these characters a year later and see that they're doing okay. It was amusing to have Jay list some of his faults for Michael, as if he's trying to defend against all of the accusations from readers that he's too perfect.
It was also fun to see Alpha-Michael come out again, but the unwilling-to-use-lube roughness just ended up making me uncomfortable.
bonus star for being free

I loved The Telling and this is a great sequel to it, and whilst a fairly short read, it does pack a lot in.
It focuses on the ongoing effects of PTSD on Michael, especially on holidays when fireworks are prevalent. The main thing I got from this story was how important family (in this case Jay) are in the all consuming supportthey give to any one dealing with PTSD.
Another great read for me and one I will revisit
