Nuits D'enfer Au Paradis (Short Stories from Hell)
What do you get when five great authors come together to create a paranormal prom anthology? In a word - greatness!
Meg Cabot starts off the collection with THE EXTERMINATOR'S DAUGHTER. When Mary shows up at Swig, an exclusive VIP club in Manhattan, it's not to socialize. No, she's on a mission to take out Sebastian Drake -- and by take out, I mean kill him with a crossbow. But when Adam, a fellow student at Saint Eligius, takes his own potshots at the dreaded...more
The Exterminator's Daughter by Meg Cabot ***
This story is about a girl who is hunting and trying to kill the vampire that turned her mother. The chapters alternate back and forth in the point of view of Mary and Adam.
I liked this story right away because it has a character named Sebastian. (My son's name.) But, I quickly became frusterated with the amount of times Meg used the word 'well'.

Wow. Just wow. What the hell did I just read? I still don’t know. This was one big pile of suck.
Meg Cabot’s The Exterminator’s Daughter: Hello! My name is Mary. I’m trying to kill the vampire that seduced my best friend, Lila. His name is Sebastian Drake and he’s got Lila under some kind of spell. Lila’s (now ex-)boyfriend, Ted, is heartbroken. I’m not a stereotypical main character at all. So what if one parent is missing and I only hav...more
Honestly, the only decent story in this book for me was the Exterminator's Daughter, the first one you'll be going to read- if you're interested in reading this title anyway. But I'm warning yah, you might as well prepare yourself for some silly and pathetic female protagonists. Ugh-gen. (I can't even stand calling them heroines!)
Well, the Exterminator's Daughter was written by Meg Cabot (I like her, she's funny and brilliant. The only reason why I decided to read this book)
Belki Stephe...more

Knowing this story is going to be a series makes a big difference in my rating. Had I not known, I would have been insanely frustrated with the ending / non-ending of the story. Nothing is wrapped up yet it's not really an obvious cliff hanger either. I'm curious to see where Harrison takes Madison. I have high hopes for an amazing series.
Stephenie Meyer's Hell on Earth **

I picked this up to read the short story by Kim Harrison. Her story, Madison Avery and the Dim Reaper, introduces a new main character and is the basis for an upcoming full-length book and presumably, series. I admit that I'm getting tired of the Rachel Morgan series of late and this new offering didn't do much to win me over. Still, I will probably give the new book, Once Dead, Twice Shy a chance.
The only other story I read was The Exterminator's Daughter by Meg Cabot. It was also okay, bu...more
I really liked Meg Cabot's "The Exterminator's Daughter," with its Buffy-esque throwbacks, and Michele Jaffe's "Kiss and Tell."
I wanted to like "The Corsage" by Lauren Myracle a lot more, since it's a retelling of the creepy "The Money's Paw" (a perfect story for a stormy night) ... And I would have liked some more closure with Kim Harrison's "Madison Avery and the Dim Reaper."
There is a story, "Hell on Earth,"...more

Lauren Myracle, "The Corsage." A prom-centric version of "The Monkey's Paw." Nothing new, but not terrible.
Kim Harrison, "Madison Avery and the Dim Reaper." Madison is killed on prom night, but as the Reapers argue over her body, she escapes and tries to live like a human again. Cool set-u...more

My order from greatest to least:
1: The Corsage by Lauren Myracle
This one actually brought me to tears. This story seemed to be the only was that didn't have a happy ending. I felt both pity and fear for the characters. I will not be reading the story it was based off of, that's for sure! This was scared me enough. Be careful what you wish for indeed. Why she didn't wish to go back in time is beyon...more

Critical analysis: It is an irrational collection of tales that will draw you in if you are interested in the kinds of literature produced by these authors, or if you are already a fan of these authors. However, if you have no interest in strange tales about youths trying to be normal prom dates while having to cope with insanity worthy issues concerning the undead and damned, skip this one.
Opinions: I could not get into it. Perhaps it is the genre of the authors, thei...more

I am glad that I read this anthology. I was exposed to four authors that I had not read before and because of that I will actively be looking for their novels. However, I realized that short story writing is not for everyone. In some stories, I was disappointed and frustrated because the story felt incomplete. There were too many loose ends that were left hanging at the end.
Review (each story individually):
The Exterminator’s Daughter by Meg Cabot (Rating 2/4)
In no particular order:
There is the Madison Avery story which is actually the beginning of a series about a girl who more or less becomes a Reaper. I liked this one well enough but I didn't enjoy the open-endedness nor am I interested in reading the full book.

The whole of the book kept me on edge as each story revealed these interesting, attractive characters being taken on a whole adventure of magic and passion. “Good book?” he asked, taking it from her and reading the subtitle, “A Guide for Good Girls Who (Sometimes) Want to Be Bad,” out loud.
