I consider this book to be an indispensable companion, along with the maps and chronology at the beginning of David Day's Tolkien: The Illustrated Encyclopedia, to any reading of The Silmarillion. It's also a very enjoyable companion to The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Fonstad's scholarship is meticulous, and the book, for those who are reading or have read any of these three main works, also makes a superb stand-alone read--something unusual for an encyclopedic reference. Highly, highly

Only for the super geeky! All the multitude of maps are helpful while following the stories (includes maps for The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion) if one is so inclined to have to always know where the action is taking place. I have enjoyed it.

August 2011 --- Awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome! I totally loved this fun book. It had detailed maps of everything, inside and out, from Isengard to the Mines of Moria to Mordor. And those are just locations! Also maps showing where "The Hobbit" is in relation to "Lord of the Rings." Maps of Mirkwood, and other large things. Maps showing where each army went/was in multiple battles. Maps by vegetation, and language, and people. And lots of words too, describing what happen

A brilliant idea, brilliantly excecuted. I actually used this atlas while reading the trilogy to get an overhead since of the scale and layout of the settings. This is especially for people like me who love the map supplements that come with National Geographic magazines.

Fantastic, detailed maps of Middle-Earth, including cities, towers, and battles maps. Very fun and helpful to follow while reading of the Fellowship's adventures. Even gives details from The Hobbit and historical battles/events before The Hobbit and the trilogy.

The Atlas of Middle-Earth is vital for anyone reading Tolkien's works, especially beyond The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings. Full of detailed maps and charted journeys, Atlas is both a practical and precious treasure.

Really neat book with detailed maps of middle earth done by a geographer (for her PhD dissertation). It's great to see the maps and how everything relates in all the stories (including from the first, second and third ages)

Really an invaluable visual guide to Tolkien's Middle-Earth, covering everything from climate to population distribution. Plus, it really saved my ass on an English paper!

A wonderful resource to supplement any of Tolkien's works centered in Middle Earth. Detailed yet user-friendly. Covers Silmarillion through Return of the King.

Terrific accompaniment for following along with the fellowship. Even had the Ages from the Silmarillion for you hardcore Tolkienists.
Written by an actual Geographer.

The perfect companion to have when reading LOTR - especially for people like me who have a hard time visualizing buildings, maps, and such in their head.

An insightful and helpful guide to Tolkien's secondary world. The maps are bigger and more detailed, and really enhance Tolkien's own writing.

If you love pouring over maps and are a Lord of the Rings Fan, you will like this book. If you don't like both, it wont interest you

This was the greatest, most-helpful companion to Tolkien I have ever run across. I like maps and atlases, but this one takes the cake.

A helpful companion to the novels and films; the well-referenced maps provide added clarity to Tolkien's finely composed world.

I've not learned nothing new from this book. Its all what you can get from LoTR and Hobbit if you're reading carefully.

Hard to believe but I read this atlas cover to cover. Very well illustrated and very interesting detail

Something cool you can do with a cartography degree (she's done other worlds, too)

This book was quite interesting and useful on one of my repeat times through the trilogy.

I had the Map Of Middle-Earth from this book as a poster next to my bed as a kid; my dad and I tracked the journeys on it as he read the whole Tolkien bookshelf to me over the course of a couple of years. As such, I admit that I picked this up out of sheer nostalgia.
Problem with this version is...I keep falling asleep. The elven names and near-Biblical histories are sheer literary narcolepsy. I ended up doing the 'kindergarten thing' and paging through to ooh and ahh at the pretty More...

I love having this with me when I'm re-reading The Lord of the Rings. Fonstad has done incredible research into the geography of Middle Earth. Then again, I am fascinated with maps of all kinds, so I suppose I might be a little biased. (Wait. Me? Biased? And stating my overly biased opinions? Never.) Just ask Julietta.

An astoundingly detailed, legitimate atlas put together by a cartographer with a frankly incredible knowledge of Tolkien’s writing. I’ve seen maps of the US put together with less skill and care.
