If, as is claimed, Petros Makarios is Greece's foremost author of crime stories, the rest must be very dull.

The improbable theme of this tale is a series of suicides committed live on television. Inspector Haritos, on sick leave, begins an under cover investigation. This being Greece in pre-Olympic Games building mode there is ample scope for corruption. Haritos - helped by his media contacts in the press and television, together with an assistant who compensates for his lack of IT know-how - do

Petros Markaris is a Greek writer, but his books have been translated in many languages, he is one of my favorites, actually now i'm reading his book “the late-night news”. He writes detective novels. This book is his best for me so far, it's not like all the other detective novels that you already know the killer and you just wait to see what will happen. In this book you have absolutely no idea what is going on, you find out things when Inspector Haritos finds out ! It was one of the books tha ...more

I normally enjoy Markaris' writing. But this one was a bit slow. Maybe because Charitos was still recovering from a serious shooting incident....However The description of individuals and the Greek psyche is always an enjoyable read as well as insight into Greek cuisine and way of life are what make his books so fascinating for me.

Inspector Costas Harotis of the Athens Police Force is on sick leave, recovering from a bullet he took in the chest protecting a mother from her stepson. Politics being what it is in Greece, he is "temporarily", then more or less permanently replaced by an incompetent who, however, has connections in high places. Meanwhile, three very prominent figures--a successful businessman, a left-wing politician, and a right-wing journalist--all publicly commit suicide, the first two on live TV shows. An e ...more

MARKARIS, Petros: “Live!

Suicidio perfecto

An enjoyable escape from Scandi crime. Insp Haritos who is on sick leave is asked to investigate unofficially the public suicide of a number of prominent Greeks. It really gave a flavour of Athens preparing for the Olympic games with an atmospheric capture of the heat, the traffic, feelings about immigration from the Balkans and the ghosts of the military Junta. Also a very engaging hero, I will definitely read the first two in the series.

I enjoyed this more than the first one in this series that I read although the premise of people committing such violent suicide was bizarre. Perhaps it also made more sense because I was reading it in the city it was written.

Quattro stellette e mezza.

After a slow start - the slowness of Greek life seems to be infectious! - I got fascinated by Kostas' weary fight for integrity both in and outside the police station. Nice holiday literature. And what an intriguing title!
